Tom & Jerry will have trigger warnings on Amazon

Quote:Quote:

It seemed innocent when we were kids, but now “Tom and Jerry” is getting a warning about possibly being racist.

The classic cat and mouse cartoon from the 1940s now comes with a disclaimer on Amazon Prime Instant, saying that the animated series may contain scenes of “ethnic and racial prejudice.”

“Tom and Jerry shorts may depict some ethnic and racial prejudices that were once commonplace in American society,” the disclaimer states. “Such depictions were wrong then and are wrong today.”

This is not the first time “Tom and Jerry” cartoons have been slapped with a disclaimer. In a previously released DVD from Warner Home Video, a warning appears on screen informing viewers that some of the cartoons show racial and gender stereotypes. The DVD also contained an introduction from Whoopi Goldberg, explaining why producers decided not to remove the offensive scenes from the re-release.

That's right, it has nothing to do with Cartoon violence

I saw this earlier and thought it was funny cause I found Tom and Jerry to be one of the least racist old cartoons. If you want "ethnic and racial prejudices" look at some of the old Speedy Gonzales cartoons or Dumbo.

I miss watching speedy gonzalez. It would be hilarious if they did a new one. The shitstorm that would follow would be worth it.

Racism?

I remember watching those cartoons and laughing at some cultural stuff because it's actually true.

Well all I know is, I refuse to buy Dumbo until they recolour the crows with bright neon colours and call them Parakeets or something. I don't care if it makes sense, I'm just tired of being triggered. I have more PTSD than an Iraqi war vet.

Because there's no racism at all in those cartoons. There's just funny stereotypes that might induce butthurt in a very sensitive segment of the population, sjw's.

Also lol at how americans are more concerned with "racism" than violence.

Yeah Tom and Jerry was racist, but then again it was from the 40s and 50s so it is what it is. This is the Black mammy image portrayed here.

^^^^This one showing Black Africans as savages, and cannibalistic and uncivilized living in the jungle somewhere. (Majority of Africa is actually grassland).

At the same time though, its not fair to throw the warnings exclusively on Tom and Jerry. I feel they should do the same to Bugs bunny since I think they far more racist with their cartoons like this:

or this:

I just look at the characters and their actions, not at their color.

Some people try to hamsterize "racism" so much that they become racist themselves.

"Stereotypes are funny because they're true."

That's the whole point of comedy. Comedy is an outlet to vent, say whatever the fuck you feel like, laugh about it, and move on with life. It's a chance to break free of polite company and make a few fart and shit jokes, or laugh at the opposite sex.

The alternative to this is censorship. And with censorship comes a rise in tension and anger that naturally comes from squashing the human spirit. Being easily offended and insisting on political correctness will invariably lead to censorship.

"Tom and Jerry" are just the beginning. I have an idea how we could profit from this.

We should start a Web site called The Political Corrector -- Righting the Wrongs of American Culture.

On the site, you could basically "deconstruct" pretty much everything as being morally transgressive because it's politically incorrect in some way -- from Ben Franklin to Elvis to "Leave it to Beaver" to "Dallas" to the boy bands of the late '90s. This would be moralizing of the highest order, making even the most respected of preachers look like filthy sinners.

For us, this would be a parody site. For the social justice crowd, it would be like the bible.

Racism and sexism are now pretty much in the eye of the beholder and they're now retroactive...so it's open season on anyone and everyone! Everything goes! Everyone is guilty in some way. Let's get them. I'll bet we could get sponsors on board through inducing guilt: "Not buying an ad on our site? So you SUPPORT RACISM AND SEXISM THEN?!!! ALERT NBC!!!!!!"

It could almost be like...hmmm, what's the phrase I'm looking for? That's right -- a witch hunt.

What could be more American than that?

“Tom and Jerry shorts may depict some ethnic and racial prejudices that were once commonplace in American society,” the disclaimer states. “Such depictions were wrong then and are wrong today.”

This is another attempt to control the narrative by distorting history.

Based on the available evidence, these depictions weren't considered wrong then, and in fact were wildly popular and successful commercially. Only when judged by society's current standards are they are unacceptable.

In 50 years, will the same warnings apply to The Boondocks? That also uses stereotypes to create characters, it just uses ones that are currently socially acceptable.

How about Black Dynamite? That relies on stereotypes from the 70's for humour, will using references like that become unacceptable?

This is where I part company with these people. If they had written "Some people might find this offensive," fine. Because that would be accurate and would be fair warning.

But "wrong then and wrong today?!" Who the hell are they to define what's "wrong?" They're a fucking corporation. Wasn't the left once suspicious of corporations? Now they use them as moral arbiters.

A for-profit company should not be telling us right from wrong -- nor trying to rewrite history. It can warn us about things, but it ain't the Pope.

As much as the left criticized Republicans for being in bed with big business, they seem to have no problem using big business to when it comes to pushing their own agenda -- be it politically correct cartoons, firings over people's feelings about gay marriage, or the maze of sexual harassment laws, many of which are coming back to haunt the left.

It would be great if someone came up with a joke trigger warning similar to Metallica's warning label about curse words on Master of Puppets that they stuck on there after Tipper Gore went on her little crusade to protect the children.

I just saw an ad on TV for a new ABC Family Channel show about two aging careerist lesbian matrons. ABC fucking FAMILY! I bet people in the future will look at this era as utter garbage.

Seems like it would be a good troll job in all honesty. I think it's worth looking into. I might even be amenable to setting the thing up.
