Law of Attraction

The first time I was introduced to the so called "LOA" a friend gave me a cassette tape when I was 25. This was back in the 90s. It was Earl Nightingale's "The Strangest Secret" If you haven't heard it, I highly recommend you youtube it and listen. Changed my life outlook.

Now, there are tons of books about the LOA. It's basically become an industry. I do believe in it to some degree as I've noticed that when I am constantly thinking about something, it eventually turns up in my life. Sometimes this isn't good as it may be things which are undesirable.

I realize some look at LOA as hokey, new age science mysticism. I think there is definitely something to it.

I'm more interested now in active LOA. That is, taking 10 or more minutes per day and , in a meditative state, focusing on not just things you want, but what kind of person you want to be. The "I am" statement. I read an interesting book called "Ordaining Reality" where the author has a science/technology background and he actually gets into , what he believes, are the physics of the LOA. For me, an engineer by education, it was an interesting, somewhat plausible read. Might be a bit tedious for the non science minded.

Has anyone practiced with success the LOA in their own lives? I'd like to hear examples / stories if so.

If you feel 10 minutes of reflection and meditation helps you accomplish things or better yourself, more power to you. I can definitely see a case being made.

But the idea of the law of attraction having any "physics" behind it is pseudoscientific mystical idiocy. I can see why shit like The Secret took off and became a best seller. The idea that your thoughts, emotions, and the content of your mind alone somehow affect the world around you is essentially the wet dream of this narcissistic generation.

"affecting the world around you" is not really the underlying premise of LOA. I don't think it can be summed up that way. I have never read The Secret, and quite honestly I am a little skeptical of it after things I've heard about it. I respect your opinion about LOA, but disagree.

I would advise, if you have time to listen to The Strangest Secret by Earl nightingale. It was recorded in the 50s. Certainly not of this "narcissistic generation" The idea that "we become what we think about" has been promulgated by some of the earliest wise men.

I definitely believe in it after several instances in my own life, but it's not the simplistic key to all riches that books such as The Secret would like you to believe.

"The only purpose for which power can be rightfully exercised over any member of a civilised community, against his will, is to prevent harm to others...in the part which merely concerns himself, his independence is, of right, absolute." - John Stuart Mill, On Liberty

I've had some very distinct experiences with LOA that lead me to believe it is true, however The Secret is wildly incomplete if not outright lying.

The Secret says "want it - you get it!" However wanting only produces more wanting. You have to step into the feeling and behave as if you already have the thing you want. For example, jack off to all the internet porn you want, it won't bring you a girl whether or not you're thinking about women and using "the Secret." Instead, act like you already have a girl, and behave the way a man with options would, and women will be more attracted to you.

Now, one could say "that wasn't LOA - it was just you changing your mindset and getting want you wanted naturally." Sure. There isn't really a difference. It could be both LOA and natural. However, if you're interested in experimenting with this yourself, I suggest two things:

First, journal. Often I've had an intention show up later and not notice it. Journalling will allow you to track your intentions the same way biohackers track bloodwork and internet marketers track data. Write down one intention at a time. Be specific and make it something that hooks you and feels possible. Step into the feeling of having it, and then let go of it. Then notice if you spend the rest of the day in want or not. Writing down intentions will let you see if the process is actually working for you or if it needs improvement.

Second, tag your intentions. Add a slight touch to identify that this is your intention showing up. "I want a new car... with a red bow on top. If it doesn't have the red bow, it's not mine." It might seem silly, but this will actually make you scan your environment for opportunity. You'll notice things you don't normally. This is especially good if you have a skeptical mind, because as your journal and tag intentions, you'll build evidence for your own process.

I'll add too - a lot of people say "well, if this works - why not just win the lottery and be done with it?" But does the lottery really excite you? When you think about winning the lottery is that just some abstract concept or is that what gets you out of bed in the morning everyday? For most people, the lottery isn't a passion. I have a chosen artform that excites me. I get to work on it regularly, and support myself doing it. Using LOA will force you to consider what really excites you. (Also, fun fact - most lottery winners go bankrupt in five years. Their consciousness doesn't know how to handle money, and they spend right through it.)

But the basic formula is what we already teach - "fake it till you make it." Act like you already have the thing you want, follow your excitement, and it'll come to you. Journal and tag intentions if you wanna play with the pseudo-spiritual side of it.

There are a couple of LOA Meetup.com groups in Montreal. I've attended a few. It's basically a circle-jerk of feel-good rhetoric, post-wall women patting themselves on the back for being "positive", and simplistic jargon for the simple-minded.

I think there is something to being open to having positive things happen in your life.

I think meditating on outcomes you'd like to achieve can help you act in subtle ways that might help bring them about. It doesn't mean they'll definitely happen and it doesn't mean if they don't happen it's because you didn't do or think a certain way.

Life is random. If you use LOA to try and gain control over your life you're going to be miserable. If you use it to change your perception of the world then it might lead to something positive.

I definitely think their is something to it. However "The Secret" simplifies to the absurd. So that life is a genie and all you have to do is wish for something.

Where I think the Law of Attraction is more about concentrating on what you want. If you concentrate on what you want, you are more likely to see solutions and/or ways to get what you want. You still have to take those opportunities when they present themselves.

You can't wish for a bunch of random things. You have to focus a great deal of attention/effort towards it.

People usually misinterpret the necessary steps to apply this law in their lives consciously. The thing is, you have to actually TAKE ACTION instead of mentally masturbating yourself into thinking that this law would magically bring you happiness in any way, shape, or form. You can never truly be happy with what you truly you want in life for long, so you have to take the good with the bad.

Who made this law?

Is this a scientific law?

Is there any evidence to suggest that this "law" is even real???

I mean, I understand how Gravity is a "law" and "Newton's Laws of Motion" and "The Laws of Thermodynamics", etc...

But, the law of attraction???

Is there any scientific backing to this?

This seems like a completely made up "law" that was invented just to sell "new age" products..???

How is this a "law"?

It sounds more like an unproven and unreliable theory.

---

Maybe, there is a "placebo effect"? If I believe in it, it becomes real?

Quantum physics acknowledges the existence of vibrations and energy around the universe. Studies have shown that the universe and brain cells have the same pattern.

The brain mimics the patterns of the universe.

Whenever we have different thoughts, we have different vibrations and patterns in the brain. When we focus and think only one thought, our brain vibrations program the brain to think and create.

We have the most powerful machine in the world, right behind our eyes. If we were to focus in the mind's eye the thing we want dearest, we visualize and we act as if we already have it, and go after it like it truthfully belongs to you.

Our patterns change, our chemistry changes, our universe shapes in the form of our thoughts, and we can do anything we put our mind to, if we really wanted.

You will have an idea, meet someone who can help you or opportunities shows up. As long as we follow our intuition. Trust it and begin the process of getting anything you want.

Life is good

Here are some important questions:

How did the people who died in the World Trade Center attract that?

How did the people who got shot at Virginia Tech attract that?

Did those people wake up and say, "I'm going to die today."?

That makes the assumption that the law of attraction is responsible for everything that happens in your life.
