Not gonna lie, I hate doing the cardio and until recently I had always questioned its value in a workout regiment (i.e. figured I could do without it entirely).

I've gotten decent workouts doing cycling, but my schedule is such that I can usually hit one long ride on a weekend and nothing more so it's not really effective as a routine.

I have always hated running. I've gotten decent results though forcing myself to do 2 miles on days I'm not lifting, gets me sweating and tired.

Have other guys here found cardio routines that are either easy to stick with, especially rewarding physically or mentally, or get you good results efficiently?

Hey this article has is about high intensity steady state cardio. Its short 15-20 minutes, but conditions all of the bodies energy systems and gets your metabolism burning fat around the clock.

Just fucking move!

A man should do whatever he can to make sure he is exercising his heart, lungs, nervous system, etc.

That is the most important part of cardio. Circulating the blood, stimulating digestion, loosening muscles and joints, stretching the back, flushing the of toxins, sweating, etc.

That stuff is more important than aesthetics. Whatever is going to help a man do that is what he should be doing.

Not doing that stuff is essentially a slow suicide.

***

Do whatever work for you.

Do what fits into your life and lifestyle. Do what is fun for you.

I have bad knees and ankles (from years of playing basketball) so I prefer low impact stuff like running in sand, swimming, yoga, calisthenics, etc.

I usually prefer to be outside versus indoors but again, its all a matter of choice for the individual.

Do what you like. Just do something!

***

I don't need much cardio because my diet is very clean and I burn a lot of calories each day. I also do resistance training almost everyday.

I try to walk as much as possible. My job is sort of active so I move around a lot each day.

***

I think many people feel like they have to go the 'the gym" in order to do cardio. The gym is great is but walking or jogging is also good. I like to hike up mountains and run up sand dunes.

Playing a sport is often fun. Dancing is beautiful. Sex is good. Walking the dog, yard work, cleaning the house, doing laundry, shopping, etc.

Just fucking move, everyday.

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is the meanest cardio I have ever discovered. We get guys that come to our classes that do insanity every day, run 10ks, bike for hours at a time. They are all dead ass tired after 5 minutes of rolling.

Sex is great cardio to if your doing it right.

Heard that. Everything I did before starting Jiu Jitsu was a joke in comparison when it came to cardio. Start Jitsu and you'll also discover muscles that you never thought existed. Best sport I've done.

That is only because those other guys are not used to the different breathing pattern used in a new sport (Jiujitsu).

You can take a Jiujitsu guy to a different sport and watch him suck wind, all the same.

One of my mates is a BJJ instructor, and he can't run long distance for shit, nor can he deal well with futsal when he tries it with my team a couple of times. But on a mat, he'd kill us all.

For cardio I have a "Desk" exercise bike (FitDesk) I bought from amazon for 300 or so. Allows me to work on a laptop, read novels (something I don't like doing but it's necessary for my work) or browse the web. Very comfortable and I can do it three-four times a week and not feel exhausted. I hate hate HATE jump ropes though mostly for the quick exhaustion that comes from it--which is GOOD if you want to lose weight quickly. After cardo I do bicep curls and work on triceps for a while but I always feel like my heart gets the best workout from the bike. I tried jogging but ended up getting shin splints. The bike solved that problem. [Image: smile.gif]

Wouldn't you consider doing High Intensity Interval Training ? Usually lasts about 15-20 minutes constituted with 30 sec sprint, and 60 sec jogging as an exemple

Can anyone break down this a bit more?

I use to go swimming every now and then, but that place is a 30min drive away.
I also use to kickbox and practice jiu-jutsu but that place is also 30 min away and it's impossible for me making it to fit my schedule all the time.
Sessions are starting so early.

The most convinient alternative for me is running, even though I'm not a fan of it.
A lot of nature, forests, empty gravel roads with no traffic.

Fuck those places that are 30 mins away!

In the time it takes you to drive there, you could already be done with your cardio.

Only go to those places when you really crave swimming or jiu jitsu.

Cardio in nature is fun, for me, I often smoke a little weed before I do it..

I know you don't like jog..

What about bike riding, walking, hiking, climbing trees, calisthenics, etc.?

No swimming holes around? Lakes? Rivers?

Maybe, you could get a heavy bag and hang it somewhere around your home?

Mountain bike?

Listen to music or a podcast to make things more enjoyable..

Ha. Gio, you are the man.
You really smack me in the face of how blind and ignonart I am of what I have when I'm looking around me.

What do I see?
I look to the south on my yard, I see a plain grassfield with the size of a soccer playing field.
A fairly deep river is running all the way next to it.

I look the the north and there I have a big warehouse, not heated and without electricity but with plenty of room, in fact perfect for a heavy bag.

I look the the left and there I have a 30x30metres square of concrete.
Right next to that is a pile of heavy logs and on the other side is a pile of truck and heavy machine tires and then another big pile of different sorts of iron rubbish and heavy stones.

In fact my own home is a wild outdoor crossfit gym, it's even wilder soon when the Arctic winter arrives.
You might have to sprint away from an attacking brown bear or a moose as bonus when you are working out.

It's free and it's right outside my door.

I've had good results just taking a brisk walk in the morning and evening (plus lifting every other day).

Swimming is my favorite because it works the entire body. Running hills is very good as well

Your home sounds like a beautiful place to exercise. I love working out in nature.

Use those heavy machine tires!

Swim-Run-Walk in that river!

Run in those fields!

I wish I could join you!

Jump Rope and Kettle bell swings.

Jump Rope: Start with basic jumps for 5-10 mins. Then aim to do 100 Double-Unders for time. When you do a 100 then try to improve the time.

Kettlebell swings: 30 secs on/ 30 secs off do this for 12 mins.

Must better than cardio and will get you in shape in months.

The best cardio is whatever you enjoy, since you should be self-motivated to keep doing it regularly.

For me that's basketball, swimming, and soccer.

That said, I've been forced to rely on the elliptical lately as I've been recovering from an injury, and to be honest it's becoming the best part of my day. The motion is so smooth and repetitive that it's easy to close your eyes, zone out completely and meditate for 30 minutes. With all life's distractions, it's a great little escape.

CrossFit. Many things mentioned in this thread are a part of CrossFit program (lifting weights fast, jumping rope, kettlebells, etc).

I went from 90kg to 68kg then gradually to 75kg which I maintain as it gives the best performance (I am a "small" male frame-wise).

Going for brisk walks on your off days is all I do nowadays. Try to be more active all round, not just limit your cardio to 15 minutes of HIIT and being sedentary the other 23 hours and 45 minutes. Instead of taking the bus, go and walk. Instead of taking the elevator, go with the stairs. Everyday life gives us many options to be more active without finding the time to ,,do cardio''. Day gaming is also a good form of cardio.
