Baking Soda

I recently started supplementing baking soda as a pre-workout supplement. For a little over a year, i've been struggling with extreme nausea when working out. I attributed it to pushing myself to the limits.

Somewhere online I read that baking soda is an effective way of lowering the blood's Ph balance, making lactic acid build up minimal while reducing that post muscle burn.

So I took a spoonful of baking soda onto my tongue and downed it with a glass of water. Surprisingly during my work out I could push out more reps with no effort. The burn was gone and even better my nausea that has been following me around is mostly gone. I thought my bodily problems were caused by gastropareisis or something worse. Nope, just really acidic blood.

Figured i'd pass this along to the RvF hive mind.

All hail the power of baking soda..

So the only time you get this nausea is when working out? Any idea what's causing it?

Arm and Hammer seriously need to send Roosh a monthly cheque - for few 100 bucks at least. Is there any site out there that has done more to promote the use of Baking Soda?

But on a serious note: Great that it is working for you. The stuff about lowering PH levels sounds logical. Is there no end to the way Roosh members use the stuff?

The one unconventional way I use it is as a replacement for shampoo (No 'Poo). It works juts fine. Use it about one a week with vinegar rinse and my hair is no worse (or better) than if I shampoo'd it every day/other day.

Fascinating stuff, frenchie. Good share.

I used to get naseous when I worked out too. Especially if I did it in the morning or ate anything, regardless of how small, anytime close my workout. I'd often have to stop the workout halfway through and leave the gym.

Interestingly enough, I had a girlfriend who got like this right before she'd orgasm. Which was extremely frustrating for her, as you might imagine.

I wonder if a bit of baking soda would have solved both our issues.

I don't notice myself getting naseous these days when working out, but then again, I do bodyweight exercises instead of lifting now, so that could have something to do with it. I've also developed the habit of working out on a completely empty stomach over the years.

Are there any other reported benefits to baking soda as a workout supplement?

Sadly not, I was getting sick after eating breakfast. I also had issues eating normal quantities of food. Think like, after one or two bites I would get "full" and if I forced myself to eat my body would say, "NOPE" and up it comes.

At first, I thought it was gastropareisis (or lazy stomach). Given the symptoms I had. When I started really working out hard, my appetite increased and the lazy stomach symptoms subsided partially. However, I started breaking into new weight territory (my deadlifts were breaking 230 lbs) and not to mention clean and presses were an always guaranteed way to purge my gut.

I was browsing around online and discovered that American diets are actually very acidic due to the processed nature of the food. I think it really just stems from too much lactic acid in the blood stream which causes all of the above symptoms. When I would vomit, I immediately felt a thousand times better and could continue my work out.

Not to mention, baking soda reduces that muscle burn after working out significantly as well as increasing the amount of reps I can push out till failure.

The only downside is the sodium. I drink about a gallon and a half of water which keeps it down. I may switch to potassium carbonate to avoid the water retention issue.

I use baking soda to get rid of acid reflux which I get after eating anything like tomatoes. So baked beans, pizza of any kind, even fresh bolognese...horrible after half an hour.

Until, one glass of the hallowed Arm & Hammer!

I usually start the day with half a teaspoon in water.

I've had to stop using it as deodorant. It works great but I get a red rash and very itchy in the pit area. Anyone else get that? I may need to use less or dilute it with some coconut oil or something.

I get gout attacks every once in a while. Baking soda and water help immensely although it can raise your blood pressure.

That would be the sodium in it. Have you tried potassium carbonate instead?

Baking soda also replendishes ions you loose when sweating.

Baking soda: very cheap, takes out stains, whitens your teeth, replendishes ions, serves as shampoo, deodorant, you can cook with it, since roman times. All hail baking soda!

Baking soda has been reported as a cure for certain types of cancer. Studies have shown that cancer occurs almost exclusively in people in a long-term acidic state. "Man Reversed Stage IV Prostate Cancer with Baking Soda and Molasses":

Cancer cells reportedly thrive on fermenting sugar instead of respirating oxygen for their survival. Maple syrup acts like a Trojan horse to allow high pH bicarbonate of soda to enter cancer cells and shock them with a sudden surge of alkalinity to oxygenate them and lead to their demise.

I just bought two mini boxes to take with me travelling. Wouldn't want to miss out on the heavenly properties of NaHCO3

Firstly, while baking soda is great for lowering pH in various areas of the body, the sodium within it has the exact same effect as the sodium in table salt - it will encourage water retention and reduce the kidney's ability to regulate your blood pressure. Some people are more susceptible to this than others, but the point is high sodium intake can cause high blood pressure in some people, and it would be wise to watch what the extra sodium does to your blood pressure if you are taking baking soda on a long term basis. You can possible compensate for the baking soda by cutting out all salt and salty products form your diet.

Secondly, regarding the comment from Midnight Special, I also got skin irritation if I applied baking soda powder directly to the skin. This irritation easily resolved by stopping the baking soda and applying aqueous cream, which strongly suggested to me that the powder dehydrates the skin. The solution was simple - mix baking soda with water in a spray bottle, and spray a mist of baking soda solution on to my armpits. Can be a bit wet if you spray too much but otherwise works fantastically and I don't get skin irritation anymore.

Another option would be to mix baking soda with aqueous cream and apply the mixture onto the armpits, but I haven't bothered yet trying this out.

Okay, yeah I asked because baking soda seems to be just taking care of the symptoms, as opposed to treating the underlying cause. As you said, the typical American diet is overly acidic which can cause a wide range of health issues. If you fix your diet and still have this problem than it may be something more that needs to be assessed.

I've found that taking certain pill supplements on an empty stomach (multis and magnesium especially) can cause nausea.

Maybe it's not lifting that's making you sick, it's something else in your routine that happens right before lifting.

In any case my favourite pre-workout is Apple Cider Vinegar, which also lowers pH.

Now all we need is someone to mention Green Tea and we've got a Roosh Forum 2009 throwback party on our hands.

Toothpaste also works well in this sense-it is also an alkaline chemical. However it contains some ingredients which aren't good for you to swallow.
