Japan’s Health Ministry Fears Summer Lesson Will Destroy Population, Begs Sony Not to Release Game
BY JACK · SEPTEMBER 1, 2014

Announced at Sony’s Tokyo Game Show press conference, Summer Lesson is a virtual reality game where it appears you will tutor a Japanese schoolgirl using Project Morpheus. If this is released, public officials fear Japan’s population will hit zero before 2100.howtoaskforthisatgamestopThe Japanese Health Ministry has warned for years of the imminent threat against Japan’s declining population. With women refusing to get married and men who are content dying alone, Summer Lesson appears to solidify both positions. Women will refuse to marry a man who plays Summer Lesson and men will not care because they have Summer Lesson.

“There is no turning back if this game is released,” explained population scientist Akita Osamu, “Japan’s population is already under attack and Summer Lesson will be the finishing blow. It is already affecting Japan as we speak. I am currently single and I have already pre-ordered this game earlier today. I will die alone and that is perfectly fine with me and Nahoko which is the name of the girl I have chosen for Summer Lesson.”

Even Japan’s prime minister Shinzo Abe personally went out of his way to beg Sony CEO Kazuo Hirai to prevent the release of this game. Unfortunately, Hirai said that it was out of his hands arguing that Japan would eventually fall victim to a game like Summer Lesson and believed it would be most honorable if Japan did it to themselves rather than having a game from the American Oculus Rift do it.

“We need this,” said Sony Worldwide Studios president Shuhei Yoshida, “We have already abandoned Japan so it does not really affect us if Japan just goes away completely. To the PlayStation 4, it is like Japan does not even exist. After Summer Lesson has done its job, Sony can finally become the western company it deserves to be.”

Created by the Tekken team, Summer Lesson is by far the most popular game at the Tokyo Game Show with people spending over six hours in line just to try the demo. Tekken producer Katsuhiro Harada is thrilled to finally work on a game with real consequences.

“I will go down in the history books as one of Japan’s most influential people,” stated Harada, “I originally wanted Tekken to be more like Summer Lesson but without virtual reality, people were unable to view Nina the same way I did. Now people will know me as the person who single-handedly controlled all of Japan’s men. After all, it is either this or Tekken X Street Fighter and I would much rather destroy Japan than work on Tekken X Street Fighter.”

Microsoft and Nintendo have both responded to this news similarly. Microsoft is relieved that they no longer have to try to sell the Xbox One in Japan and Nintendo is relieved that they will soon no longer exist and will not have to worry about the Wii U.

I've never heard of this game until now and how serious this is but apparently they are taking this very seriously.

And I thought Japanese are nationalists but from the quotes that might not be the case.

I thought it was legit until I got to the last two paragraphs. It reminded me of this article I saw yesterday about Facebook adding a Satire tag to Onion articles since people were believing they were true stories.

LOL. I do understand that Japanese men are not marrying. But why? The women seem feminine enough. Hell, if Brits and Americans can still marry/have babies with their horrid women, why should Japanese men do so at a lower rate? I did read that they "reformed" (ahem) the divorce laws a few years ago to give women a big chunk of their salaryman husband's nest. Was that the big driver? Anyone familiar with Japan care to enlighten me?

Low T.

Most of these Japanese cats are not banging anything other than their hand to some teenage anime character on a hand held game console.

I'm sure a lot could be said about Japanese women and how beneath that feminine exterior many can be cold ball busters, especially after they marry, but that's not what I'm going to focus on.

I think a lot of the problem is that Japan is basically the logical end point of (post)modernity, and young Japanese have been crushed by that.

Most people take their attitudes towards marriage from what they see around them, especially in terms of their own families. These young Japanese men know that marriage comes at a massive cost. They were essentially raised in single parent families. Their fathers commuted two hours each way, worked ten hours or more, then went out with their colleagues drinking after work. They worked weekends and they never took vacations. To all intents and purposes, these kids didn't have fathers. There was some dude who regularly sent money to their mothers. On the rare occasions when they saw these guys, they were haggard shells of men. The "fathers" and "mothers" had nothing in common and were just going through the motions for the kids. That's not a marriage. Young Japanese men have looked at that and realised what a massive con it is, especially since the economy has been stagnant for two decades and where the social contract of being a salaryman for a guaranteed job for life and constantly improving material quality of life, regular big bonuses, etc. has been permanently broken. I'd suggest that young women have also seen what massive con that is, for their mothers have been trapped in a mere simulacrum of a marriage also, their own silent and private hell, and that's a part of why they're not interested either. The whole thing is a giant Potemkin Village, but the whole thing that keeps it limping along is that no one wants the shame of being the first to admit that he hates it, is failing at life. The younger generation just quietly opt out instead, and their parents wring their hands silently in despair. Occasionally, politicians talk about it, but they are completely off base and so no one cares what they say.

So, what's the alternative? Well, the weird thing about (post)modernity is that it provides anything you could ever want, though nothing you could ever need beyond keeping you alive. These Japanese kids are never going to starve. They can afford all the latest fashions, all the latest gizmos, all of their weird little hobbies. They can buy anything they want at any time of the day from a convenience store. Yet all of that is completely meaningless. It's living only for the moment. Yet when the alternative is the Japanese salaryman lifestyle, they probably take living for the moment as the lesser of two evils. Also, Japan is a really communal society, and people aren't going to buck the trend. They're not going to move to Thailand and wife up there or start a location independent income/lifestyle like some Westerners would. If one in 10,000 Americans is aware of that and prepared to do it, it must be something like one in 100,000 Japanese who would do likewise.

It is getting harder and harder to tell the difference between satire and the real world nowadays. Poe's Law.

Spot on. I've seen these Japanese families as expats and my guess is that they're extremely stressed out beneath the perfect exterior. Actually, the expats probably have a good time in places like Thailand were work isn't everything. Still, these Japanese housewives parading around with their kids are too damn perfect. Slim, feminine, bangable, with impeccable stylish clothes and polite and happy kids. They are suffering from the same as quite a lot of upper middle class euro women. They have so much available for them in the form of information, food, clothes etc, that they feel an immense pressure to outdo each other in who can make the best lunch for their kids (google japanese kids lunch), who can find the most eco-friendly brands, who spends most time tutoring etc.

Their women need some struggle, just like western women, simple as that.
