Currently I'm doing part design consultant part interpreter and translator for Japanese firms who want to expand in this part of the world (mostly translating and interpreting), it's easy and comfortable. I got somewhat bored, made up some new resume and sent them just for fun.

Suddenly a Japanese company asked me for an interview for an 'architect' position which use softwares like to ansys to analyze architectures and stuffs, the problem is I've never work with Analysis software before, from what I've seen on the internet, they don't seem that hard to use. Could anyone have experience chime in? I have a good life here and part of me don't want to do it but there is other part of me want to jump into personal uncharted water just for the heck of it.


The dilemma is I always wanted to be an architect when I was a kid or tell people I'm an architect

I don't think it's actually architecture work that why i wrote 'architect', the details I have to ask, the job is mostly do ansys to analyse and if I get the job I will have to work long hours it seems, will go to the interview anyway, at least this will be an experience. I have tendency to not take anything seriously anyway so I will see what I can get away with.

Yeah, I did it. Different industry, different background. Turned out fine, although I went from more technical to less technical. Also, I'm not an architect so my perspective is limited at best.

I do happen to be an engineer by education though, so as for the software I think the issue isn't so much the usage, but the interpretation. Ultimately the user, not the software, will be making decisions about structures and whether they are safe, open to adequate daylight, prone to unnecessary wind loads, conducive to good natural air exchange, or whatever the point of the analysis may be.

Sounds like a cool job, in my opinion, based on the half-sentence or so that you posted describing it.

I see why it wouldn't be architecture per se, but I think anyone who uses tools in a methodical and precise way to design and build things is an engineer of one sort or another.

I majored in finance but am now working in software testing. I was lucky to have a (hot) supervisor who mentored me well and I was able to learn on the job. It's important to keep up the confidence and ask questions to people around u. All the best.

Never lie about a job that you can't learn all the requisite skill for within 6 months.

Dave Geffen lied about a college diploma to get a job in the mailroom at the Williams-Morris Agency. He's a billionaire now.

Do you have the experience/training/education to do the job of an Architect competently? If you answer "No" or had to think about it then you'll get found out with the piss poor quality of the work you hand in.

I personally wouldn't do accept the job.

They'll find out within a day. They'll start to use architectural lingo around you and ask you questions when engaging in small chat.

Actually if this was in Vietnam I can try it just for fun, and if it didn't go well I can always fall back to my safety net since I have connections here. Not to mention my drawing gigs on the side.

The problem is the workplace of the job I posted is in Tokyo, and I have to build everything from ground up again and commit full time which can suck big time. I was there in Japan and from last year the country feels like it's on the downward spiral.

Me being a lazy bastard when working for others probably doesn't help.
