My routine for the past decade have mostly been work/getting fucked up/ sleep. Now that I'm cutting back on the getting fucked up part I'm starting to realize that I have a void and I have a need to create something. What are some of your personal creative outlets?
what is your creative/artistic outlet?

For a while my friends and I had a comedy show podcast that never really took off. It was a lot of fun though, I'd love to get back into that.

Trying to learn to draw and paint (digitally with a Wacom tablet, plus some light sketching with a stylus on a tablet I can bring with me).
I've always had a conflicted relationship with writing, I sometimes enjoy it (and I read a lot, both fiction and non-fiction) but when it's not for work (the occasionally enjoyable parts of it), debate or just random inspiration, I'm having a hard time forcing myself to sit down and make a deliberate effort to write. Particularly fiction, which is what is theoretically most tempting to me.
And having to force yourself to do something goes a bit against my idea of an enjoyable hobby.

I actually don't have much hobbies (mostly its the time for them).
This forum is my hobbie, it'd be cool to play a guitar, I'm definently not a good writer, but I'd like to say my philosophical views are higher than most my friends.
Gym is a big one for me.

Back when I had a cubicle job I really enjoyed drawing on post it notes.
I used to try to teach myself piano(keyboard) but I haven't played in a while.
I guess my current artistic pursuit is looking for songs to play in my car...

Music Production (FL / Logic)
Now that I'm done grad school, I try to devour as many non-work related books as I can.
Picking up a musical instrument to play is also great. So is cooking, which will yield huge dividends when gaming.
I also build model airplanes when I can.

I make music. Like the way some people have a shit. So it's not 'artistic' to me. It's part of my being.
When I want to get creative or artistic, I dabble in 3D Modeling. I'm not very good, but that is the whole point, I'm learning new skills, meeting new people on forums, learning new politics.
Man, the politics. It don't matter what you choose to dabble in in life, there will always be a hierarchy and you had better observe and respect and defer to that hierarchy or you will be in deep kakka doodoo.
I have no drawing ability. I am a crap, and I mean totally crap conventional artist. But that is the wonder of computers. In the same way, that I'm not a great guitarist, I can record stuff and twist it around and bend it to my will, which is what I think a good artist does. You might disagree. I don't give a fuck. I do it anyway. And have a lot of fun.
Who knows, one day I might even make some money.

I paint or draw. It is amazing and indescribable how relaxed it gets you man!
I have a whole room in my house that is just art stuff, like easel, acryllic paints, pastels, canvases and boards. It smells like wood and paint in there. I can shut out the world for as long as I like.
It started out as a bare room with one easel in it. Now my paintings and drawings cover the walls from top to bottom. Some nights I like to just sit on the floor and look at all the shit I made. The room exists only for the art. Its also a great bait/excuse to get a date over to your pad! Oh yeah I want you to check out my work
If you have the time you can take a begining art class at your local CC and learn some basic skills while you daygame, added bonus!

I don't really have an artistic outlet but I do sing in the shower.
Other than that I absolutely love taking long walks (1.5-2 hours) late at night (11pm to 1am) every once in a while. There's something about being out in public alone with nobody watching you and you're all by yourself with just your thoughts and your headphones. I've had quite a few amazing experiences doing this, going from having a mental breakdown to full-blown confidence in 2 hours is a helluva a thing. It's also happened the other way around too, where I go out feeling great and come back sad and depressed. It's interesting to see where my thoughts go. I bet other people who might be a little fucked up in the head can relate.

Thanks for all the responds! A lot of musicians on this thread! I like music too, unfortunately I don't have much rhythm.
This one I'm very familiar wih.
Thanks for the suggestion. I'll definitely look into it. I have a very short attention span though so I don't think I'll be too good at fishing.
I never thought of sports as art before, but you guys are right. Sports can be both creative and artistic... Especially basketball! I used to play a lot back in the days. I think I'm going to start playing again. I need to find some pickup games closer to me, because the only places I know people ball at is kind of far from me now.
That sounds pretty bad ass!

Reading and Writing
More than just journaling, there is something spiritual about creating a story from scratch. I may have figured out what that something is:
Everything these days is about consumption. Items and pleasure, items and pleasure, items and pleasure...
To go 180 degrees in the other direction and create is the mental equivalent of proper exercise. The creative process is so radically different from consume, consume, consume and represents the most frightening, non-frightening emotion I've ever felt.
My only regret is that I didn't realize this until my late 20's. I was a good boy and viewed school and office work as "mental exercise." Dumbass.
Throw away your television. Your sports team doesn't care about you. Big-budget Hollywood films exist to distract you from your slavery. Music is...
the top dog art form.
Music snobs are missing the point on at least two levels.

Woodworking. The trade was basically killed by mass production (IKEA, rooms to go, ect.), but it's still enjoy it. Occasionally you'll find someone who appreciates a REAL wood piece made by an actual craftsman, and the painstaking work it takes to make it perfect. Wood finishing is a whole other art in itself. At least I can make my own furniture.
I like to read, write and play guitar.
I figure that 90% of guys on this forum have some sort of book that they're reading at any given point.
I started self-teaching on the guitar front when I was 17, but I was too neurotic and couldn't just "play." Now I'm 25 and there's a sort of easy pleasure to playing guitar. I'm not amazing or anything, but I can play some covers of my favourite songs, so there's that. nothing like thinking back on all the songs you liked 10 years ago and going, "whoa, I can play those songs now!"
Grab a guitar and start learning. It'll make you more interesting than drugs and alcohol, and could even get you laid.

I play guitar but I have had one in my hand since I was a baby and grew up in a family of musicians. What I hear consistently though is that the guitar is very hard to learn as an adult. Would love to hear any stories of people who pick up guitar as an adult and became pretty good, I just havent heard that. What I would say is as an adult, an artistic and creative talent should be enjoyable, not a long drawn out learning project. Unless learning is your art form and satisfies a deeper need for you. Piano and drums in my opinion are pretty easy to learn, drawing and painting is harder in my opinion and not my forte. I think writing is something anyone can do, or at least try.
Twist balloons into toys. Work on building warp drive.
I recently started to read again for fun. That and I'll write on occasion. Sometimes it's good to just pour some deeper thoughts into words to help you reflect on them.
I think up new angles to make money in my industry.
It is as intellectually stimulating for me as anything else I've discovered.

Funny that you mention this.
For some, success is when work and pleasure are indistinguishable. Looks like you're headed in that direction.
