New Craze: Divorce Selfies?

There are prom selfies, engagement ring selfies, belfies -- but divorce selfies? Divorce selfies aren't something we come across every day.

Still, that's exactly what Orlando, Fla. residents Keith Hinson and Michelle Knight posted after receiving their divorce docs and ending their three-year marriage last Thursday.

"Here’s to the most friendly, respectful, and loving split imaginable. We smile not because it’s over, but because it happened," Keith wrote under a photo of the former couple beaming outside of the court room.

Keith, 36, said the pair realized the selfie might seem a little off-color, but that ultimately it's set the tone for family and friends who might find interacting with the newly divorced couple awkward. The selfie speaks for itself: there's no bitterness here, just love.

"Michelle and I have a good sense of humor about this," Keith told the Huffington Post via email. "And we also wanted to let people know that this didn't have to be a negative experience. We are choosing to move forward with love. We've been separated a year, and throughout that time, we've both been committed to preserving our friendship."

The post-split selfie has so far racked up 132 "likes," plenty of positive replies from Facebook friends -- and a few confused ones, too. ("Bahaha. Funny pic! Congrats? What do I say here?," one friend wrote.)

The couple says they're game for whatever feedback may come their way.

"Friends and family have always thought we were a bit unconventional with this process," Michelle, 35, said. "They first balked at our dog custody arrangement, which requires us to see each other each weekend with the dog! But ultimately, I think they are proud of how we are handling things. It makes it easier on our friends for us to be friendly -- there's no need to choose sides."

And though the marriage was short-lived, Keith says he's just glad it happened.

"To share that kind of bond with another is one of the most divine gifts given to us," he said. "I feel blessed to have had the opportunity to love and be loved in return. I truly smile because I lived in that beautiful sunlight of love for a bit."

Another way American society has figured out how to rationalize and celebrate its failures, like I don't know, choosing to have legally-binding relationships with incompatible motherfuckers.

This dude was probably a starter husband and didn't realize how he was used, and in the process wasted years of his life dealing with a woman who never wanted him.

People are lying to themselves when they do this kind of shit and then say at the end of it, "there's no bitterness, just love".

It's the breaking up version of:

Marriage really has just been turned into a fucking joke in this country, its saddening and disgusting simultaneously

This country just keeps on crumbling. Ever fucking event in life is now being turned into a selfie opportunity to post on instagram or snapchat or some other bullshit. Is rampant narcissism how the Roman empire eventually fell?

There's no bitterness yet. That's what hindsight is for. Because a few years down the road you find yourself thinking:

1). Why did I give my best years to someone who didn't appreciate it?

2). Where did my house go? Why is someone else enjoying the patio I put in? Wonder if they sat on it on this nice summer evening?

3). Where did my youth go?

4). Where did my friends go? That's right -- they're all busy with wives and kids! Living in houses. I had a house once (see #2). Sure was nice. Great patio, too.

5). Wow, single life in your forties is totally different than it was at 22. I can no longer just walk into the mall and get a date with an 18-year-old shopgirl that night after closing time. Not good.

6). Not only that, but there aren't many malls anymore. Guess my "mall game" is as dated as I feel.

7). Speaking of being younger, maybe if I listen to hair metal or grunge again, it could bring my youth back.

8). Nope, I can't. It's also depressing. I should get out...

9). Oh shit! Women in my age group now either have kids (ew) or are eternally single cat ladies no one else wanted (ew ew).

10). I could date younger, but that would mean started the "process" all over again.

11). Wow, even younger women are fat now. What happened to them all looking like Tawny Kitaen?

12). The "freedom" I felt at 22 being single isn't as good, even though it should be better since I'm no longer peniless and jobless.

13). That's because I have my married past hanging over me like a shadow now. Back then I didn't have memories to fight off like "15 years ago we moved into our new house and those days were fantastic."

14). Well, there's always reruns of "Two and a Half Men!" I used to be like Charlie back in the day...

15). ...but, unfortunately, feel more like Alan now. Perhaps that's a metaphor for divorced guys in general.

16). Maybe there's an online community that can help me make sense of WTF happened...

The guy is a loser. Divorce used to be a sign of failure now it's a sign of success for the woman.
Because she successfully managed to destroy your life and take all your shit.

Hey Keith, maybe if you weren't such an enormous chode your wife wouldn't have emasculated you to such a degree that not only do you allow her to humiliate you in front of everyone you know with divorce selfies on Facebook, but you continue to harp on about how great your marriage was.

It's like getting shot in the face and saying thank you.

Modern journalism in a nutshell: find something on social media, write an article about it. Be sure to include a like or follower count, because numbers are impressive and add legitimacy to the story.

Isn't it sad when homosexual couples seem to take the concept of marriage more seriously that hetero couples?

It's classic overcompensation. They want to show the world that two guys can slam each other in the ass and still be considered moral.

People are free to do what they like. I just don't take gay relationships seriously.

We don't know the details of the split, so it's entirely plausible that the girl did not divorce-rape him in the process and they continued to maintain a decent relationship even after going their separate ways.

And besides, he's much better off after taking 3 years out of the marketplace than she will be.

I'm all for the preservation of marriage as being good for society, but if there's no kids, no fights and no divorce-rape, then what's the problem here?

The woman in the article is 35 years old and childless. While she and others may *think* he was a starter husband, the reality is, she isn't going to remarry. Now that she is divorced, she is finding out that the only men who find any value in her are well over 50. Remember, the real life ending to Eat Pray Love was the 40 year old author marrying a 60 year old who wanted a green card. Keith will recycle himself just fine, and she most likely will be alone with her cats. It would be interesting to see her future facebook comments when he remarries a woman 10 years younger while she is a member of an older man's harem.

This.

I have two friends who have gone through this. Both have beta tendencies, but very decent dudes. The biggest problem with their marriage is that they did not demand enough respect from their wives. The wives got bored, and split.

I always reccommend this movie is you want to keep your wife.

I wonder if this will start a trend, now that other divorced women can now get likes for divorce selfies. If others will do it, I have a feeling you will see guys with far more pained expressions.

We live in a world where people dump water over their heads to attention whore and claim its for a good cause.

I'm pretty sure this can chug along at a good pace.

He's a 37 year old decent looking guy who lives in Orlando. He has the potential to have a much better life than her if he wants it

But he's such a huge beta chode that's not going to happen

He'll probably end up marrying some frumpy 40 year old with kids and telling everyone how "lucky" he is
