Like most things depression is on a spectrum. You have one end where everything is happy, the sun always shines and the other end is a dark place (I've been depressed but I'm not really sure I've been anywhere near that end). I think that's why its very difficult for people who have not experienced it to understand it; Some people are born leaning towards one side of the spectrum and will never be able to see what the other side is like, hence why you have people who think in seemingly constant positive or negative frames of mind.
I also think its dangerous for people to dismiss depression that is not at that far end. It is still a dark and miserable place.
