Silver market has been interesting, wouldn't you say?

Luckily (amazingly) I got out of the way of the freight train.

Looking to get back in soon.

Do you own physical Gold or Silver or Both?

Several years ago I was thinking heavily about the future of the dollar and was even in the middle of doing research on the best way to own gold, where to store, where to buy it, as well as the possibility of getting my savings into a basket of foreign currencies. I got into this analysis paralysis mode from so many fucking opinions and options out there on the future of gold and the economy. I just sort of forgot about it and dropped the ball. Now I feel like an idiot for not taking action.

I don't plan on buying any gold metals right now. Conventional wisdom says when everyone and their mom is talking about an asset, you can be sure it's overvalued. I've seen the same mindset with real estate a couple years. "Get in before it goes up even more! This is a sure bet!" Gold may still go up some, but I think if you didn't get in a few years ago, no point in getting in now, you likely missed most the upswing.

Now is probably a great time to buy real estate though. That's what nobody wants right now. I'd go as far as to say real estate is likely undervalued as markets tend to overshoot and overcorrect. When everyone is buying, sell. When everyone is selling, buy.

speakeasy -

Yeah, if a market is running, I like to be long or out.

Chasing markets is for the birds. People got slaughtered on silver. But it will probably turn out ok for them as long as they didn't panic and sell.

Which of course many of them did.

If you can't handle 20% swings, you shouldn't have a seat at the table.

"Now is probably a great time to buy real estate though."

A lot of (smart) people say real estate is a good move if you want to hold some value. Although they also think it still may correct 10 to 20%. I think it could be even more.

I hate real estate though:

Too illiquid
Too levered (generally speaking) unless you come in heavy and do a CASH buy.
Not diversified

I like liquid sh*t (and I don't mean that club from the late 90's in Miami Beach called Liquid either.)

If you by real estate, buy foreign real estate. You dont have to report it.

they hiked the margin requirements on silver from 0 to 12% in 5 days - unheard of. this drove the price down 20%.

whatever, it will only slow the inevitible: the usdx chart is all one needs for PMs. but I admire people who try and trade silver, as its pretty much the most insane market out there. I'm just a long, and since last sept made 100%.

I expect silver to give me another 100% return 1 year from now. it will go over $80 easily.

I own both, physical, not the paper ETF B.S. like GLD and SLV. If you want a great way to accumulate, check 'fidelitrade'. I don't go through them anymore. I started back in 2007, so I've rode the wave up quite a bit. I also bought more sivler than gold in my earlier days due to the gold/sivler ratio being insanely high. I now have a coin shop where they know the expect me at every options expiration week (JP Morgan knocks the price down of gold/silver every options expiration week). Nothing has really changed my outlook on those metals. One thing to look into are the jr miner stocks right now. It's like finding an Internet stock before the dot com rush. Some you hit big & some go to 0. Just do your due diligence. Some firms are just explorers who find the silver/gold/copper and sell their property rights to bigger firms, while others are true exploration, drilling and mining firms. No, I am not a penny stock troll commenter, but I do hope Sameseau's expected price is close to the price of silver by 2012.

Hahahaha, ok, i'll do the work. all disclaimers apply. check out 'fire river gold' and 'tinka resources'. those are two firms that trade on the pink sheets. early now. i usually assume they will go to 0 before i get a big hit, but tinka has steadily been climbing on me. love it. tinka has eric sprott as an investor, and if you know anything about silver, you know his name. Tinka is more of an explore and sell type firm. Like theire drill results will steadily come in, they'll get bid up, then a buy out offer for double the price. With the dearth of physical silver out there, having financial claims or the access to hard physical will be worth $$$. Never hurts to take $500 to buy 1/4 oz gold coins and then whatever lefton some silver.

and what is your take on the current PM situation?

Interesting, I will check those out.

I typically avoid pinksheets though.

I am out of PM stocks right now, but hold physical. I also hold some dividend blue chips, and some long term agriculture plays. I am really looking at agriculture more than precious metals. And things like uranium that have been wacked. I like investing in things that are out of favor and have corrected heavy.

I sold Cocoa, and PM stocks and etfs. I also sold a Macau casino play.

To tell you the truth, I am not really sure what is going to happen in the nearterm, and I am waiting on the sidelines for now.

I think the dollar may rally, so I am real cautious.

PM are real crazy, and I need to take a break.

Plus, I have a feeling the market might correct heavy and drag everything down.

If QE3 comes, I am back in.

Hey G and everyone else in this thread...

Check out this (http://www.inmalafide.com/blog/2011/05/3...t-savings/) article.

If the government is going to start dipping into people's savings accounts (like my 'rents), what measures would you take to secure your savings?

(If this doesn't make any sense it's cuz I am a newb to the market and money but I am becoming more and more interested.)

I get the feeling foreign currency might be a good place to go but I'm not sure. youngmobilglobals's china boner makes me think it's a good idea haha.

Yes, it is an insane moment right now in the world of money. Tough thing with trading the commodities like gold, oil, cocoa is the f*ckers int he exchanges will change the margin requirements to boost or shank a play. I've got a lot of cash on the side, besides my PM holdings and some oil stocks, and view the jr miners as my spec portfolio. I also have a few 'market liquidation event' plays on. I expect a market liquidation soon, which will funnel money in treasuries to take over for the end of QE2 and then it will be the FED's excuse for QE3. In the event of a liquidation, I'm looking at ag, oil and other energy plays, which QE3 would boost. I have the stock watch on like I did in late '08. I'm relaxing a bit, buying physical PM, and preserving wealth after the run I've had since '08.

Not much experience trading in the forex market, but they do have currency based ETFs out there for many major and even 2nd tier currencies. I used to use everbank years ago for a cash account as well as CDs in the Norwegian Krona (I was going there for business). I didn't consider it a trade, but I did learn how solid Norway/Sweden/Denmark are financially. I bet using a combo of currency ETFs and some everbank CDs could work for a long term and short term approach. Example: a quasi-pairs trade where you have CDs in a petro/commodity currency but use a 2x long USD etf for a short term USD spike.

I'm with MrM27. Juniors are worth taking a look at right now. I'm still buying physical gold and silver on the dips. Most likely silver will trade sideways for a while, and gold will take the lead for the rest of the year.

I think they had a nice pullback recently with the pullback in silver and gold but some have already recovered a bit. Long term the most likely scenario is gold goes higher as people loose faith in printed money. There's stories all over the place about central banks starting to hoard more gold.... Everything is long term bullish for PMs. Juniors will make out like bandits in the end, but near term who knows anything can happen.

QE3 is definitely good for PMs if it goes through. I think waiting to see what happens is a good idea, but I'm really long term bullish, not really day trading this, so I'm adding to positions on pull backs and taking up more positions in the juniors...

Let's see what happens.

I still believe Silver is undervalued compared to Gold. If America does experience massive hyperinflation and/or loss of the Dollar as the World's Reserve Currency, it's value will go up even more as it becomes monetized. At that point physical Silver will be easier to barter and trade with than Gold, as well.

Impossible to time the market, but I was predicting a liquidation event that will give the FED cover for QE3. Last week was a slight pause because it was quad witching for options expirations so the big boys had to rig the market to screw the rest of us. I've got my liquidation trades still on and am looking to sell covered calls on those for July. Jr Miners are getting killed right now while gold/silver are holding up, so I'm looking for entry points on a bunch.

Got to make some scratch for my summer fun plans.

Well from what I have been reading the dollar is dead and is on life support right now. China is spending the US debt it holds and experts are predicting they may invest in the stock market, make some money then withdraw which will create a collapse.

I am still buying silver coins and will start buying some gold, once these games are over things will correct itself.

I foolishly bought a silver stock and lost 50% value in no time.

When the liquidation drops gold and silver, I'm scarfing up more. I'm holding onto my gold and silver as a longer term investment. These long term weekly charts look good to me. You are right QE3 will come, but only when a liquidation has people crying for the FED to do something.

With Greece and the USA debt rattling ominously at the same time I have simply not dared to put my latest real estate gains into any market. Right now they are sitting on a bank account with a measly 3% yearly interest rate but seeing how I there's so little consensus on the market right now (other than telling people to brace themselves) I can't imagine doing anything else.
