Walking around with a disposable paper cup looks at once effete and plebeian - no wonder it's an American staple.

Sit down, have your coffee, finish it, and then get up. Don't treat it like your mama's tit and cleave onto it everywhere you go.

@weknowwhatsbest: Obama saluted a Marine with a Starbucks cup. The Marine wasn't offended & saluted the cup back, relieved to finally salute something strong.

Proof, if any was needed, that our elites truly despise us.

Unfreakingbelievable. Yeah and I'd like to give ole Barry a one finger salute. He's exploiting our military again in Africa and the Middle East, the least he can do is remember to maintain respect for military customs, and to his Marines.

I'm sure those Marines couldn't wait to bitch about it afterwards on the internet.

He had a bag in his left hand and a coffee cup in his right, what do you expect him to do? His hands were full!

Also, check out that massive helicopter behind him after he salutes! It has four arms with blades on each one.

Who gives a shit?
I'm sure the novelty and pomp of getting saluted countless times a day wears off after 6 years.
Can imagine Barry, after some awful food the night before clenching his anus in the oval office while talking to Biden, runs for the shitter and doesn't salute the guy standing outside. World screams that he should've saluted back properly and emptied his bowels in front of the marine as sign of respect.

I could be wrong but it does look like his left hand is empty and he's trying to button his shirt or coat. If both his hands were full, he should know to say "as your were", or "carry on". Reagan was the first president to start returning salutes. Even if a president wasn't prior military the least he can do is return the gesture properly especially when those Marines are ready, maybe not willing, but ready to give their lives for you.

I like the way you think, though I could use quite a bit more tact in my personal presentation as well.

I mean, I'm no Commander in Chief, but still.

If a president really respected military custom and regulation, he wouldn't salute.

The whole civilian salute thing is a recent affectation, started by Reagan. His successors didn't have the balls to stop it.

President Eisenhower didn't salute military people, nor did JFK, Johnson, Nixon, Ford, or Carter.

The military rule is you don't salute while in civilian clothes or when uncovered (without a hat) outdoors. The services have slightly different rules, but none salute in civilian clothes or uncovered outside.

If I were president, I'd end the habit and explain why. That's not going to happen, so we will continue to have manufactured outrages like this.

Would a Marine be more satisfied if I just nodded to him in respect or said "Good day soldier" instead of awkwardly saluting like this?

Interesting, as an Australian, I assumed the salute was a required protocol, stemming from his role as commander in chief. However I think it is disingenuous to suggest that the outrage is manufactured. If he's going to salute, he should do it properly. If he wants to buck convention, (or as you suggest, respect the old military custom) he should simply not salute.

Slightly off topic but calling a marine a 'soldier' could cause offense...soldiers are in the Army.

Yeah who seriously cares. More pressing issues in the world. Even a "right-winged" affiliate of Fox News indicated George Bush did something similiar in 2001.

It is true that the president's failure to execute this simple military courtesy is a reminder of his lack of a military background. It also betrays, I think, a streak of nonchalance in his character that by now few fair-minded observers can deny.

If an active duty Marine--officer or enlisted--had attempted a "salute" like that, he would have been severely tongue-lashed.

On the other hand, let's not take this too far. I hear a lot of noise on the right--most by those who never Marines themselves--about how "insulting" this was.

They should remind themselves that far worse "saluting" offenses have happened. When General MacArthur met President Truman on Wake Island during the Korean War, he never even bothered to salute his commander in chief. This was a tremendous insult, and one that Truman did not forget. And when that happened, you didn't hear any criticism of MacArthur from the right wing militarists.

I am not a huge fan of President Obama, but this seems to me to be petty nitpicking. I mean, please.

If you look at this photo below, you also see MacArthur with his hands in his pockets, as well as his wearing an "open neck" non-regulation shirt with no tie. This was also a breach of military protocol when meeting with a superior. So, one can always play this game, if one is so inclined.

Non-issue.

People who hate him, will always find a reason to hate him more.

Something will always be "X" fault.

While I respect and honor our soldiers and marines, this really is much ado about nothing.

Of course no one wants to give him props for bombing the Khorasan group (should've been done asap, not when they were about to activate).

I hate him, but not for this.

This just seems like silly nonsense that is distracting from the real things that matter.

Bush saluted with a dog in his hand. Bush supporters won't bring that up but are incensed by Obama doing it with coffee.

I have strong ties to the military and am not a fan of Obama, and even I say "Who gives a fuck"

Sure, he could have taken the extra quarter of a second and moved his coffee to the other hand, but people are making this out to sound like Obama has absolutely zero respect for any member of the military that defends the country he is the President off. Come on, do you actually believe that? Lets worry about shit that's more important. It's just clickbait for the permanently offended to fuel their hamster wheel.

Everyone is one upping each other

'I'm MORE patriotic than you'
'No you're not'
'Yes, I am'
'Prove it'

'Oh yeah? well, I have a flag tatted on my cock' *scoffs

TO be honest, any man upset with this has serious issues and should take a long look in the mirror.

I'm not Obama fan, although I don't hate him as he's merely a stooge like his predecessor.

It's embarrassing that "issues" like this get mainstream attention or attention here, where the conversation is supposed to be elevated from the mainstream cess pool.
