@Travel Museums: Bro, you've got to realize by this time on page 7 of this thread with you having over what 25% of the posts alone in this thread, people are simply calling you out on the dissonance between what you are trying to accomplish in Cambodia, and how you are reporting it.

When you say "I want to experience the real Cambodia" then every post of yours is complaining about some aspect of Cambodia, RVFers are gonna catch on fast.

I guess you were somewhere else in Cambodia when you wrote about going with tuktuk drivers to karaoke and hanging out with prostitutes. What's with the insults? Such hostility and you say I have the attitude?

I'm not the first person to say cambodia is a shithole in general. That's a pretty objective experience agreed on by most people who come here outside a package tour or on some kind of business.

Dissonance isn't a bad thing. I think it shows character and outside interests that I'm willing to stick it out and finish seeing a place that is so frustrating for game. Nevertheless this is a game forum so I'm gear most of what I write to my frustrations with that side of things. Big deal. Life goes on.

From 9-5 I'm out exploring cambodia not usually even bothering with day game. From 6-late I've tried to experience the nightlife everywhere I've gone here. It's not my scene for the most part but I've gotten laid. Just trying to be honest about it all. Maybe it helps others.

As I've said repeatedly most people can't understand my lifestyle bc they get two weeks vacation. I'm RETIRED. I've been retired for ten years. I don't need to sit on a beach zoning out. I like some challenge. Not chop my head off with an axe. But not sitting in sukhumvit ordering mediocre tinder. Something inbetween I guess maybe. I don't know. I'm enjoying the exploration of it all.

Well I am with TravelMuseums on this one, it's probably because he is experiencing the real Cambodia and I don't know if you did not realised but the country is not really something that it would not be understandable to complain about. :-D

Also my posts are mostly single entries Each talking about a different place in Cambodia. I'm not sargon of Osaka banging my head against the wall in one city for a year. If you look at my posts they are mostly discussing place x, what to do there, the nightlife, etc. then I move to place y and make a post about it. If I was trying to research cambodia this is exactly what I'd want to read. I covered the entire country in a little over a month. I took my time and was diligent about visiting every attraction even out of the way stuff. I think it has as much value as any other post on any other thread. I'm not a perfect person. Sometimes (read pretty much every night) I'm exhausted and just trying to get the post up before I role into a whole new day and adventure.

Mondulkiri is famous for it's elephant excursions. Did the walking with elephants tour today. Not the most famous one but they all seem about the same. The elephant valley project is booked a week solid in advance. Don't know why bc they are more than twice the price for the exact same tours.

The elephants are all retired from working so instead of riding them you watch them do their thing in the forest. They're not wild and their mahouts retire with them.

They're used to tourists on a daily basis so they wait in a clearing to be fed sugar cane. Then you watch them move around the forest and to a waterfall where you can help wash them. They make themselves dirty again and you walk off for lunch. Then visit a bonung ethnic village. Then a coffee plantation.

Tried to see if I could do the monkey reserve tomorrow but no tour operator offers it. Seima protected forest doesn't seem very accessible.

I zipped out to the monoram waterfall before dark. It's small but has a nice drop and swimming hole. Tried to find "sea of trees" past the Wat. Went as far as road turning to dirt. Only noticed a distant view of valley from road but no real vista point.

Pulled a bonung girl back to my room. She was working in cafe I had stopped in a few times. She walked past me in street so I invite her for dinner.

Kid behind desk starts talking to her in Khmer and she's like I'll wait here. I'm like nah come up. Ok.

Kid follows is up. Watches me unlocking door. I'm like wtf kid. Stands there looking in the room as I'm closing door. WTF!

I get her to give me a kiss. But she's really shy and saying no it's wrong. Then a knock. Shit forgot I ordered dinner before I went out to drop off my bike and laundry.

I give the kid a fistful of cash, take the food, and close the door. But my momentum is gone. She's ready to go downstairs.

She sits and eats with me. Her friend comes and is a bit shocked to see us holding hands and oh man is she giving me heavy kino back!

We flirt and I give her my card. She doesn't have a smart phone bc she lost two already. So no way to keep in touch.

Her brother is coming too. I tell her I have to go shower. She says she'll wait. I take my time hoping she'll come up to get me and I can show her my body. Finally go downstairs and she's gone. C'est ls vie.

Walk down to exchange my bus ticket. Guy charged me $2 more than everyone else was asking. I thought the price seemed high and asked him if it was the right price when I got it. I was pretty sure I saw it for less down the road. But I was doing business there anyway. I told him look if i walk back home and see it for less I'm gonna feel bad and come back here and ask you to match it. He's like sure no problem.

Well when I go back that guy is not there and the other guy says he can refund but will keep a dollar. I'm like why you didn't do anything and I specifically told the guy I thought he was overcharging me and I'd come back if I found out he was. So we argue maybe one minute and the guys like ok yeah ur right here's all your money back sorry.

Meanwhile some hideous Irish girl had been listening. She buts in to ask what the problem was. I'm like no problem it's done.

She's like no tell me. So I try to explain but she's interrupting me with a bitchy attitude. So this is about two dollars! Did he give you the two dollars. Do you really want the two dollars! I'll give you the two dollars! She starts opening her pocketbook and taking out bills.

I'm looking at her my eyes wide. I'm like you know some people are on a budget. She's like how much money do you make a month? I tell her $2/day might not seem like much but getting overcharged on every transaction like that/day adds up to real money when you've been here as long as I have.

But she's not interested in having a conversation. She's like I had to listen to you sit her and argue for 20 min. I'm like you mean 2 min most of which was him going to ask the boss (me chuckling). Then her friend comes back from toilet like what's going on? That really makes me smirk bc obviously she looks dumb for exaggerating.

I ask so what's got you so mad today? She's ignores and asks how much money do you make? I just stare at her in disbelief. She says look at the way your dressed. Look at the fancy clothes your wearing? I cock my head like seriosly? (I'm wearing jeans and a fleece bc it's cold in the mountains at night). Do you know how much money these people make? My look of belief turns to disgust and face scrunched up like I sucked a lemon. She mimics me with a look of disgust on her face. She goes from hideous to Scary looking.

I snap my fingers and say that's who you remind me of! She's like what? I'm like you know that show the monsters? She slams her fist on the table and a Dude behind me let's out a belly laugh. She was going for her drink to throw it at me but I had already backed away. I look at a couple other girls sitting at another table and we both nod at each other then her.

There's a wedding outside my hotel. I really hope it doesn't go on all night. Cambodians dont rent wedding halls. Instead they wait for the coldest month and put up a tent in the street. Then make as much noise as possible playing loud music while everyone sits around until it's time to go home.

Early bus to rattanakiri tomorrow. Last Province!

Phnom Penh, Cambodia Data Sheet 2014

The trip from mondulkiri Province to ratanakiri province used to be called the death highway. Backpackers used to have to hire a moto driver and it took 11 hours. Now it's an easy 3 hour trip by van.

Once in Ban Lung I got a cheap room and motorbike. I hit the 4 waterfalls and crater lake. The last waterfall is 45 min south of the lake on a very dusty but good road.

Tomorrow I'll do a package tour to some gem mines and an ethnic tampuon village. I'll get to see one of their famous cemeteries which is off limits unless you get permission from a village chief. Supposedly the altars are very elaborate.

Hoping to get some trekking in the day after tomorrow. There was a new species of gibbon discovered in the area in 2010. Troop of 500 of them live in the virachey national park. But it's $100/day and you have to do two days with an overnight in a hammock. And the last couple groups didn't see any. The tour agency said it was bc of weather but who knows?

Chatted up some Swiss girls on my van ride. But they're only around a night. They didn't have any working phones here so I just gave them my card. They just popped over from Vietnam unexpectedly. I had a drink in kratie with two other EU girls doing that. I envy the countries that get a 15 day tourist visa waiver for Vietnam. It's not complicated for Americans to get the visa but annoying enough of a 3 day process I wouldn't casual jump across the border.

Opened a few 2 sets at dinner. They were all busted but was mostly asking if they'd done any trekking yet. Walked around the main area of town but nothing going on. It's Saturday night but you'd never know it. Most businesses are shut by 7-8 in ban lung. Went out to the lake. Not the crater lake but the resort one on north side of town. Made a loop by moto but no one was out around sunset. Seems there's no nightlife here. All the girls nearby on badoo are in Laos.

I saw someone was asking about local places in SR. There's a local club across the traffic circle from Hard Rock Cafe. I was planning to go there on night but then I pulled on pub street. So I don't know what it's like inside. There's also some beer gardens. I stopped in one and maybe it was an off night. Didn't seem like much was going on. I swear on of the girls I saw there was a prostitute I saw in the high end whorehouse on soksan road. But maybe just a similar body hugging red dress.

I never had much time in SR to hunt around for local places. I did find a market/carnival thing in the evenings near the Angkor ticket booth. Lots of families and women shopping for clothes. I picked up one girl there but she was so traditional I could tell it wasn't going anywhere.

BB, I'm not tryimg to call you out but you didn't answer my PM but you did publicly call me a douchebag. And other people are saying I post too much on this thread. So I searched and found the thread.

thread-20433-page-61.html

I knew I remembered reading a bunch of your posts on Cambodia. From the way I read it I thought all this was taking place in SR. I guess you were somewhere else? It's not really made clear where you are in each post. I try to say where I am in each post bc I'm moving around cambodia and I want my posts to be helpful to someone who might be looking at it a few years from now.

Anyway you basically took over the last several pages of Fisto's thread (which was not even about cambodia; he went to other countries in SEA).

Besides your insightful posts (which I enjoyed kudos) my takeaway from reading that thread was
1. it's ok to post related stuff on a thread
(This thread is titled PP but I'm posting about all cambodia; at least same country)
2. A lot was you just posting stories sometimes several posts back to back with no one else saying much.

I'm relatively new here. I'm really not trying to bust balls. But my posts on this thread are the same thing you did a few years ago on Fisto's thread.

In fact when I was posting I was thinking we'll BB is a respected member of the community and no one seemed to care he was posting a bunch of journal type reports on a thread.

I'm not trying to bust your balls. I look up to you like a lot of people here. I see you posting stuff and I see the insane amount of rep points. I think hmm ok this is cool bc BB did it too and sometimes no one commented but overall seemed people found it helpful. But then you slam me for essentially the same thing and with insults?

It's great you have such breadth and depth of travel experience. Maybe look over your own posts on that thread and see its not so different then what I did here. Perhaps you can show some mercy to a piss ant piece of absolute garbage under your well traveled boot heel newbie like me who just wants to contribute.

Count me in as one of the guys who is enjoying your posts. I'll be back in PP next month and will stay for a month or two depending on which visa I choose. Will definitely reread your posts as reference when I explore the rest of the country more.

Addressing the vitriol between members, I don't think BB called you a douchebag? Actually don't understand what the problem is anyway; definitely understand a guy hating PP. I personally don't have a problem hanging out for a few months or a year, but wouldn't want spend the rest of my life living there.

Wife has been posted in PP for 2 months and before she left I/we asked the opinion of seven people, including three Thais, who lived or worked in PP for at least a few months. Three basically said they didn't like it and recommended she not take the job. Another three said it wasn't bad with qualifiers about garbage, poverty, sanitation and poor value compared to Thailand. One guy (my Thai friend) loved the place. As for the African comparison, I've been to several African countries with South Sudan being the poorest and least developed.

Yeah my bad I'm confusing BB and GE. I'm on the back of a moto on a dirt road so sometimes I'm not paying enough attention to usernames I guess. I read something and try to make a mental note of the content vs who wrote it. I don't quote other users bc it doesn't seem to work on my phone and I also find it annoying when I mine old threads for info and there are massive reqoutes. Got confused reading old threads. Still I was just doing what I saw BB doing.

The point I was trying to make about cambodia being the Africa of Asia is so that people can have the right paradigm and expectations. It will help you deal with and manage your experience here much better than listening to people who came on a package tour and can't really give you an accurate depiction.

There was no ethnic cleansing here but a social cleansing that saw a huge chunk of the population killed or turned into refugees. These were largely the educated people. And those left were busted down to peasants. The country is very much still in recovery.

So you're going to still see a lot of Africa type issues. For instance the heartbreaking juxtaposition of prostitution and traditional virgins sometimes within the same family. I don't know how true it is but ive talked with NGO workers who said parents sometimes must sell the oldest girl to a brothel so the others can be raised properly. These are peasant farmer class of people who are one crop failure away from having nothing.

It still sucks to be on the ground dealing with this. It's a daily frustration. I can distract myself during the daytime. And at night I can hang out with locals. There's always backpacker guys drinking beers and playing cards. But I prefer to go out and interact with local females.

Yes there are good looking Cambodian women not interested in P4P. But consider their perspective. I'm a foreigner. A total stranger. Traveling alone. Not sticking around (often in town for a night). My sexual intent is clear and present. And I'm obviously a good looking, smart, smooth enough guy that she's going to quickly deduce she's nothing special to me and I've surely banged several of her compatriots. That's a tough sell. And I usually escalate very quickly too.

That's actually not so bad a dynamic to work with. The problem is the good looking girls (even the not so attractive) are caught in a catch 22. They see prostitutes getting paid for sex. And they're coming from a traditional society frame where sex is for marriage. So they feel cheated if they have sex and do t get either from you. Also bc of the rampant prostitution any girl seen alone with you knows she is going to be seen as a whore by other Khmer. Then consider there's a ton of sex tourists here. Which makes you suspect if youre not a 20 year old backpacker. So it's very hard for them to do much more than chat with you or share a meal.

Girls say stuff like I like you. I want to have sex. But if we have sex I do want the money. Or they text you later asking for help. Or they say we'll next time. I've banged a handful of girls where it was pretty much just normal sport fucking but you pretty much have to be in PP for that. In those cases the girl only Fucked me in situations where she could be away from the judgement of her friends and they also had a good job with a foreign company. I'm not sure how them working for foreigners made a difference but almost every girl who sport Fucked me here was working for a foreign company in PP.

If you're in PP (bless your heart) more than a few days AND you can get into a Khmer social circle I think you'd have chicks lining up to go on a date with you. There were plenty of rich good looking Khmer when I went to the Thai style club in PP (epic?).

The gem mines are hour east of ban lung. Took a moto tour there. They're little more than a small shaftbarely big enough for a man dug 15 meter deep then tunneled out the sides. Buckets of red Earth are reeled up and dumped out. They sit on ground and hand sift through for zircon and amethyst.

After that guide took me to an ethnic cemetery for jarai people. Their graves are elaborate carvings like little houses. Stopped at some tompuon villages too. On the way back we got two flat tires. Hung out at the public tompuon village showers while it was getting fixed. The people's houses have no running water so they shower from water running out bamboo pipes into jungle.

I showered at one of these on my two day trek in Virachey National Park. Made an impromptu group with an 18 yo German girl and retired Japanese widower. We didn't see any wildlife really. But fun experience.

On way back we tried local rice wine in a clay jar with big straws. Sour tasting and the water added was poured from an old motor oil container. Also stopped at a Lao and Chinese village.

Girl was cute but taller than me which was intimidating. First night at hostel wanted to make something happen but got no signals from her and she was in dorm while I had private room. Didn't want to make it awkward and cause group to split up.

Next morning she almost didn't go cause she was feeling ill. No way to do anything in camp. We all had individual hammocks. Last night back at guesthouse I plannimg to do a seduction but she looked back at me after settling her bus ticket. I was chatting with other people she walks off real quick into town. Tried to find her later but couldn't. Damn.

Headed to kratie by bus. Nothing to see there at all. The Irrawaddy river dolphin pool there is closer to Laos so you might as well do that from 4,000 islands. Easier and cheaper. I'd already done it last year.

I've been in Laos for several days now. Changed buses in 4,000
Islands for Pakse. Then night bus towards Vientiane but hopped off in Thakhek to do the 500km motorbike loop.

My opinion of cambodia pussy wise is that PP and SR are decent places for banging multiple girls of decent quality. Spending anymore than a week in either place gets boring even if you sightsee everyday. It can be downright depressing if you're at all sensitive to poverty/prostitution and uneducated/trashy women.

The south coast has some nice islands. My favorite town in Cambodia is Kampot. The cardamom and elephant mountains have some opportunities for nature exploration but lack much infrastructure and tourist facilities. There's a little nightlife in serendipity beach but I found it trashy and girls ugly. Otres beach is chill as are the islands. Koh rong has full moon parties but also secluded beaches so maybe a good bet for both.

The Mekong valley has almost nothing to see in Cambodia. Eastern Cambodia has good elephant projects in mondulkiri and ethnic trekking in rattanakiri. No nightlife.

The only place I met decent Khmer girls who were not freelancers and still sport Fucked me was PP. I think any decent looking chick open to foreigners goes there to live. Even in SR there weren't any decent looking locals open to foreigner besides pros. I saw some busted ones with backpackers there though.

If you have a girl to travel with then fly into pp or SR a few days ahead of her and get your flag. Then fly out of the opposite city a few days after her and do the same.

There's some wildlife opportunities for birds around Tonle Sap lake id like to have done. But it was expensive getting access and transport to reserves and I think better chances of seeing anything in rainy season. I probably wouldn't come back just for that. Can't say I'd ever go back unless in my 50s I'm looking for a cheap place with warm weather, lax visa requirements, cheap hookers, etc.

You'd almost think its 3rd world country. What do you expect from the 2nd poorest country in SEA?

It's not always because of the money. Look at the poorest country of SEA which is Myanmar I guess. The attitude of the people there is completely different.

Myanmar feels like Thailand 50 years ago.
There is a lot of poverty there, and mostly it feels very undeveloped, however probably in next few years development will accelerate due to foreign investments, tourists etc.

Does anyone know what Phnom Penh is like during Chinese New Year, given the relatively large amount of people with a Chinese background?

Do people leave the city and it turns into a ghost town, as is the case in some other big Asian cities? Or is it just business as usual?

Enjoy it. I loved Siem Reap - a beautiful little town with something for everyone.

Be sure to spend a day at Ankor Wat - its probably the most historically intriguing places in all of SEA.

I was pleasantly surprised: was expecting it to be on the same shithole level as Jakarta or Manila but the congestion was not nearly as bad as I expected. I have a soft spot for both of those cities though, so perhaps that colored my view. Buddy from China met up with me but he brought along his much older business partner so we basically just went to old man venues like beer bars and KTV's.
