Need Help. Anyone successfully gone from Night Owl to Morning Person?

I went from night owl to morning person and now waking up is a habbit. Even after a long night out I will wake up at around 8-9 without any alarm.

Just force yourself out of bed for 30 days and make it a habbit. If necessary get a second alarm and put it on the other side of your bed. After a few days you will fall asleep earlier, as you are just to tired from a long day.

Also it helps to have a good reason to wake up early. Do your to-do-list before you go to bed and prepare yourself mentally to wake up early and get lots of stuff done the next morning.

You can reset your circadian rhythm by sleeping outdoors, without any artificial lights (and, for the most benefit, without any distracting electronic gizmos) for about a week. This will entrain you to awaken closer to dawn and fall asleep closer to sunset.

If you want quicker results, or aren't in a position to go camping for a week, you can override your light-regulated internal clock by fasting for 12 to 16 hours, breaking your fast at the time you wish to rise in the morning. This trick is useful for overcoming jet-lag as well.

I have made this switch. I can agree to a lot of advice already given and i am not going to repeat it. But I will mention this - if you are a stimulant addict (like I never was) e.g. if you drink coffee then drop it.

Also show middle finger to those who suggest that you must use pills or devices or whatever to sleep properly. You can be free from this consumer bullshit and do this naturally. It is a sad state of things that people resort to spending and consuming even for such trivial, self sufficient and natural things like sleep. How about doing something in your life properly and stop looking for magic pills?

The most important thing is to be happy about your life and to be happy about the tasks you have planned for the new day. You must be eager to complete your tasks ASAP. Then you can retire to sleep early every morning with a pleasant sense of things having been done.

The big problem with using sunlight in my case is that there is a streetlight near my master bedroom which messes me up.

Hey man, I feel your pain. I think I figured out how to circumvent your natural inclination to stay up all night. I've been a night hawk since I was 16, but I think I've found the cure.

Pick any day of the week and begin doing this:

Eat then Exercise when you wake up at whatever your normal hour is right now. The exercise can be running, bodyweight exercises or the gym, but make sure you work up a sweat and feel it. Now, if you do intend to go to the gym, weight an hour for your spine to decompress and such so that you don't hurt yourself squatting or something.

Make sure you put some food in yourself, otherwise you will crash hard after your workout.

Now, during the day, if you work, this will be tough, but stay up until you get off. Have dinner and whatever over shit you like to do at night. Now at around 9:30pm-10pm, take some Zzzz-quil or whatever other sleep aid you like (Quick note: don't make it a habit to use sleep aids, but it can help you reset your body's current sleep patterns.) Take it at least an hour before you want to go to bed so that you don't spend the time laying in your bed annoyed because you can't sleep. If you don't like to use pills or things, which is fine, try out chamomile tea. That tends to make me a little sleepy. Another thing to avoid is eating right before you go to bed. I always find that that ruins my ability to sleep well.

Set your alarm for some time like 7am-9am. I used to wake up at 9am, but I've worked my way down to 7am. I usually get in bed around 11pm-1am and I'm up at 7am with no problems.

Starting off you should probably shoot for 9am. The first day usually isn't so bad, but the second day is brutal because your body thought the first day was just a one time thing. Force yourself to make it through the first two days and You'll find that it's easier.

make sure that you place your alarm in another room or at least across your room so that yOu have to wake up, walk to it and shut it off. Don't hop back in your bed right after you turn it off. Try taking a shower, but near the end turning it down cold so that you get a quick jolt. That tends to help me wake up.

I think exercise is key, if you want to make yourself tired enough to fall asleep at a normal hour. If i just work, and come home, then I stay up all night because my body isn't tired.

Make sure you keep your hydration up as well. I tend to find that If I drink a lot of water during the day that I have a WAY easier time waking up than if I don't do that. It's small, but it can be HUGE.

I actually got into waking up early because of victor pride's (Boldanddetermined.com) 30 days of discipline. You may want to check that out if what I've laid out here for you doesn't work.

Another key that I find, is to let yourself sleep in one day a week. Usually I do that on sunday, but you'll find that it's actually harder to sleep late than it is to just wake up at some point.

Eventually, I would like to be able to wake up at 5:30 everyday and get to the gym and do work before noon hits. It's good to have a goal in mind when you begin waking up earlier, otherwise you'll just wake up earlier and waste that time instead of doing something productive, which is probably why you wanted to start waking up earlier in the first place.

Oh, also, avoid electronics late at night. That means no roosh about an hour before bed. Read a paperback book, play guitar or do something that doesn't involve electronic devices. I find that artificial light makes it harder for me to sleep at night.

Pm me if you have any other questions.

P.s. Forgive the poor formatting, I was just going off the top of my head.

Enjoy

I will be checking my PMs weekly, so you can catch me there. I will not be posting.

I did it last year and it boosted my happiness and productivity like anything. I think seeing more of the day and less of darkness is naturally good for humans. And nothing beats the chill of the morning air.

Just like yourself, I knew it was good for me but I was not able to do it for quite sometime. Even now, I'm an hour off my target wake up time which is 7-7:30 A.M. I'm pretty sure I won't be going to the extremes like 5 A.m too because that early everything seems deserted and lonely, which quite frankly depresses me as much as the late night.

I think the key when you start is to not have some fixed idea that you HAVE to do it everyday. This kind of thinking puts a negative pressure on you. Just try to do it successfully some times. Then increase that number as the weeks go by. During this time, avoid sleeping in the afternoon as you risk going back to the old routine because you'll be sleeping late in the night again without the requisite mental conditioning to get up early.

These days, I still stay awake late into some nights but I'm still able to get up early (more often than not). So overall, I'm able to follow the routine.

So my advice to you would be to have this overall target and not a target where you are demanding yourself to do it everyday, though that can also be done once you are comfortable getting up early.

OP: I saw a video recently where a doctor recommends exactly what Lizard of O. is telling you

Also cut out caffeine if applicable, at a cut off time (like no later than 2 or 3pm).

Yeah. The half-life of caffeine (how long it takes for half of an ingested dose to wear off) is around 6 hours.

So you shouldn't drink anything with significant levels of caffeine (e.g. Coke or coffee) past the mid-afternoon if you're having trouble sleeping...

... Which is annoying because I like it after dinner.

Bump.

I think I have now become a morning person.
During the last two months I have developed this and now it works like clockwork.

I use no alarm anymore, I wake up every morning between 04:30 and 05:30.
I brew coffee and I'm off to the gym for a early am workout.
After that I'm taking care of all other tasks need to be taken care of.

I go to bed every night around 08-08:30pm , only because I can't hold my eyes open anymore.

I dig this routine, the only negative effect is that confronts with my social life.
I go to sleep at the same time usually people and friends meets up.

At that time 8-9pm I'm usually tired as a dog and I only want to go to bed.

But one thing is for sure, if you want to be productive, definitely strive to become a morning person.
You will get shit done.

I always have problems getting to bed, except when I lift heavy or do other intense exercise. Even if I skip the gym two or three days, my bad habits come back, but if I go every other day or at least three times a week, I am solid.

I go to bed LATE. Like 3am most nights.

As a result I wake up around 11pm or noon.

I feel a lot better physically and mentally when I'm on a morning routine but no matter what I do I can't seem to make the shift to going to bed early and waking up early.

The only time I've done this is when I've lived in apartments with other people. I tend to 'synchronize' with a group and wake up earlier collectively.

But I live alone now so this is hard.

How the hell do I reset my internal clock!?

I have the opposite problem now.. Did you fix this or still want some insight on it.

The point of modern propaganda isn't only to misinform or push an agenda. It is to exhaust your critical thinking, to annihilate truth.

Yes. Get a light box. I recommend this one:

Use it at the same time every morning, shortly after you get up.

Question: How late after you get up is sufficient? I would like to keep it at my office, but by the time I sit at my desk its about 1 hour after I wake up. Is that ok?

Coffee.

I went from late-nighter to morning person with coffee.

I was staying up late because I wasn't tired, and I wasn't tired because I was sleeping in all morning. Get some coffee to jump start you earlier in the day, and you'll be more tired at night.

That's what broke the cycle in my case.

Just open a curtain such that the sun hits your eyes in the morning. Then it's just up to you to drag your ass out of bed when you wake up. Have a bowl or water next to your bed and a towel to splash your face. Have a coffee machine there to make coffee.

Also, deliberately scheduling appointments (any kind) for early in the morning helps force you get up.

I fall asleep around 8am and wake up around 2.

WHen i was working i would frequently (sunday night) not sleep at all. And only get around 3 hours the next night.

When i was working nights i slept well and easily with no problems.

I've been struggling with that for years. I was able to stick to it for a few days, sometimes a few weeks at a time, but I kept going to bed late. Perhaps it's caused by going out late, so I'd say try to schedule appointments in the morning.
