Do not forget to use the opening question mark at the begining of an interrogative sentence, it is compulsory in Spanish. E.g. ¿Cómo te llamas?

Also, I fucking love Malagueña Salerosa!

Las casas de cartón - Los Guaragao
This song was banned throughout the region during a lot of the civil wars. It still may not be too popular depending on where you are and who you're with. Listen to with discretion. People got killed for listening to/playing rebel music during the height of the conflicts that embraced the region. This song is a classic with campesinos, for who the conditions haven't changed since the song was written.

Que triste se oye la lluvia
en los techos de cartón.
Que triste vive mi gente
en las casas de cartón.

How sad it is to hear the rain
on the cardboard roofs.
How my people live sadly
in the cardboard houses.

Viene bajando el obrero
casi arrastrando sus pasos
por el peso del sufrir.
Mira que mucho ha sufrido
mira que pesa el sufrir

The worker decends
almost dragging his steps
from the weight of suffering.
See how much he has been suffering.
See the weight of suffering.

Arriba deja la mujer preñada
abajo está la ciudad
y se pierde en su maraña
Hoy es lo mismo que ayer,
es un mundo sin mañana.

Above he leaves the pregnant woman,
below is the city,
and he becomes lost in the maze.
Today is the same as yesterday,
it's a world without a tomorrow.

Que triste se oye la lluvia
en los techos de cartón.
Que triste vive mi gente
en las casas de cartón.

Above he leaves the pregnant woman,
below is the city,
and he becomes lost in the maze.
Today is the same as yesterday,
it's a world without a tomorrow.

Niños color de mi tierra
con sus mismas cicatrices
millonarios de lombrices
y por eso...
que triste viven los niños
en las casas de cartón.

Children the color of my earth
with his own scars
millionaires of worms
and so ...
How the children live sadly
in the cardboard houses.

Que alegres viven los perros,
casa del explotador.

How happily the dogs live
in the exploiter's house.

Usted no lo va a creer
pero hay escuelas de perros
y les dan educación
pa' que no muerdan los diarios,
pero el patrón
hace años muchos años
que está mordiendo al obrero.

You are not going to believe
but there are dog schools
that give them education.
so they don't to bite the newspapers,
but the boss!
for years, many years
has been biting the worker.

Que triste se oye la lluvia
en los techos de cartón
que lejos pasa la esperanza
en las casas de cartón...

How sad to hear the rain
on the roofs of cardboard.
How far away hope passes
from the cardboard houses...

(In case anyone is wondering, I lived in places like this when I was there the first time studying. Songs like this helped me understand where I was and what life was like for the people that were kind enough to share everything with me.)

That's a phenomenal song just loaded with symbolism about the civil war that ravaged El Salvador. Have you seen the movie Voces Inocentes? It's an excellent film about how young children from even 10 or 12 years old were forcefully recruited into the military or even guerrilla rebel groups. A great documentary to consider is El ultimo viaje de Monseñor Romero. Definitely check them both out if you haven't had the chance. They're both also good resources for practicing your Spanish.

I highly recommend anyone traveling to the region watch Voces Inocentes. Perfect story of life for many in that era.

I have a couple Romero tshirts that always get noticed by Latinas when I rock them.

Siente mi amor by Salma Hayek and Chingon

There's some eye candy for yall.

I fucking love Chingon and I'm glad Maleguena Salerosa got posted. Too bad their most redpill song is in English. Here's another featuring Hayek doing the vocals. It's a bit slower so it's easy to sing along.

Una historia sin tiempo
Que no tiene fin
un amor como el nuestro
no, ni nunca podra morir
Quiero ser en tu alma
un momento feliz
te amare por siempre
vivire dentro de ti

A timeless story
That has no end
a love like ours
not, and never ever can die
I want to be in your soul
a happy moment
I will love you forever
I will live within you

En los dias de dolor
siente mi amor
que vendra con el viento
que vendra con el sol
en los ojos de dios
lejos de ti
me veras en suenos
sentiras mi besos
y me oirias reir

In the days of pain
feel my love
that will come with the wind
that will come with the sun
in the eyes of god
Far away from you
You will see me in dreams
You will feel my kisses
and you will hear my laughter

si te sientes solo
y estas en silencio
piensa en mis caricias
y en nuestros secretos
quiero ser en tu alma
un momento feliz
te amare por siempre
vivire dentro de ti

if you feel alone
and you're in silence
think about my touch
and our secrets
I want to be in your soul
a happy moment
I will love you forever
I will live within you

En los dias de dolor
siente mi amor

In the days of pain
feel my love

Learning Spanish With Music

My desktop died and I lost a lot of my music. However, I was out the other night at a little Mexican restaurant with a live mariachi band and I was the only gringo around who knew the words to Guantanamera. I should have posted this song before, it's a must know for anyone traveling in Latin America. Just know there are a few different versions of this song due to the sheer number of artists who have performed it. Always good to know if you have to do a little Spanish karaoke.

Guatanamera by everylatinsingerever

Yo soy un hombre sincero
De donde crece la palma
Y antes de morirme quiero
Echar mis versos del alma
Guantanamera, guajira Guantanamera

I am a truthful man
From where the palm tree grows
And before dying I want
To let out the verses of my soul

Mi verso es de un verde claro
Y de un carmín encendido
Mi verso es un ciervo herido
Que busca en el monte amparo
Guantanamera, guajira Guantanamera

My verse is light green
And it is flaming red
My verse is a wounded stag
Who seeks refuge on the mountain

Cultivo una rosa blanca
En julio como en enero
Para el amigo sincero
Que me da su mano franca
Guantanamera, guajira Guantanamera

I grow a white rose
In July just as in January
For the honest friend
Who gives me his open hand

Con los pobres de la tierra
Quiero yo mi suerte echar
El arroyo de la sierra
Me complace más que el mar
Guantanamera, guajira Guantanamera

With the poor people of the earth
I want to cast my lot
The brook of the mountains
Gives me more pleasure than the sea

When I was learning Latin it was broken down in a similar form to what you did in this post. Do you have any books to recommend that do something similar because that kind of "academic" breakdown was basically my way of learning romance languages.

Books like these:

A Reference Grammar of Spanish:

http://www.amazon.com/Reference-Grammar-...0521728754

A New Reference Grammar of Modern Spanish:

http://www.amazon.com/Spanish-Grammar-Pa...1444137697

Are what you are looking for. There are a bunch more of them. I have the first one, it's a pretty good resource. I certainly didn't buy it for that price though.

Hands down, the best way I've found to improve my accent in a foreign language is to rap.

Even if your pronunciation of the vowels and consonant sounds are good, people will know you are not a native speaker because you will lack flow, speed and intonation.

This is especially good in Spanish because the language tends to have more of a 'machine gun' ra-ta-ta-ta rhythm when spoken by native speakers.

Learn a couple of rap songs to the point where you can bust out the whole song without the backing track and that fluidity will carry over into your normal speech.

In Spanish, I like to listen to Psycho Realm, Akwid or Cypress Hill. You might not want to copy me because a lot of the vocabulary is Chicano slang and won't be understood by other Spanish speakers.

This is a good tune:

Sigue la rutina no pago impuestos
Porque tengo mi negocio en efectivo por la esquina
Los carnales no son ganga es la familia
Y no canto bamba homes canto malillas
Psycho, loco, marijuano, y coco
Me dicen revolucionario

Y honduras viene dedicada

Narcos has a shit ton of excellent music and most of the show is in Spanish. Pretty easy way to practice the language because the show itself is worth watching.

Mi delirio, me estremezco, oh oh oh!

Cerca de mi

I realised that reggaeton is one of the best sources for learning Spanish but only dirty Spanish and for flirting and the bedroom. Literally all the things I have said to chicks when banging was from Reggaeton songs which I learnt.

I am a Spanish Movies with Spanish Subtitles guy. For me the best is watching a movie you already know, I watched the matrix in Spanish, and because I had already seen it 10+ times, you already have the context so you don't rely on the subtitles as much. I suppose that would be a different thread though.

I definitely think the music can be a way to learn or keep it fresh that doesn't really feel like work. Great Thread idea - just seeing it now, and I can look through and add some tunes to my Spanish Music List which seems to be growing very fast. So much great music from the Latin World.

Shows On Netflix for Learning Spanish other than Narcos I like

- Money Heist (Spain) >> Huge Bank Robbery
- Wild District (Colombia) >> Ex Paramilitary Hitman reintegrates in Bogota
- Nikky Jam El Ganador (US, Colombia, Puerto R) >> Crazy dramatized biography of his hardcore life

Trying to keep the spanish fresh with Netflix.

Also, you're gonna hear this one in Colombia, I can't say about other places in SA. WellRockTheCity Hermano
