Technology And Our New Connection To The World

In light of all of the uproar, I've been dwelling on the idea that technology, and the internet specifically, is the single biggest factor in the spate of mass murders and the proliferation of illogical ideas. With the web you can find justification for any belief you have in an instant. So if you want to find men who openly hate women, you can. Just as women can find women who openly hate men.

Before the advent of this technology, we were largely unaware of the greater world around us, and now that we are connected, everything has gone to shit. Yes, it has been a boon for knowledge in general, but a lot of information that poses as knowledge, and is not, is widely spread. This isn't a man versus woman problem, it is a global one.

I think the biggest issue is just how fast we have progressed with technology in such a small period of time. Humans have been around for thousands of years, and with those years we have built up sociological and biological impulses that we are now being forced to throw away. The issue isn't whether those ancient impulses are valid, or if a reversion to a former mentality is justified, but whether we are even capable of considering it in the way we need to.

I have seen a lot of knee-jerk reactions from a variety of sources. It really makes me think because 30 years ago, we wouldn't have the same ability to say whatever we want on a platform that can be reached by millions, or billions, theoretically. I find that terrifying. The results are also terrifying.

Now technology has brought forth a large amount of progress, but we have to wonder at what cost. Our sense of identity with our community is shattered. People in big cities don't acknowledge each other, ever. We have our faces stuck in our phones constantly. We have become connected to something so much bigger than anything we had before. As a result, we have become more isolated than ever before.

Gents, what are your thoughts?

One thing I've noticed is there are people who just happen to be set up mentally and personality wise to take advantage of it. They:
-- don't depend on a lot of close personal contact
-- Are able to concentrate for long periods of time in order to learn tech and leverage it best

I worked as a computer programmer for a while, I could do it at a mediocre level, but it was pretty unpleasant-- like being a computer myself.

It has definitely created a new class. That's why you see all that money being thrown around silicon valley.

I just think it's beginning to feel like we could never have lived without this modern technology, but even worse, that we can't. I was just born in time to see the internet in its infancy in terms of it being widespread. I have a hard time imagining what it must have been like before it though. It's all I know.
