This guy here uses some math to show that deadlifting in olympic lifting shoes has more hip drive and quad activation:

I am thinking about getting a pair of powerlifting shoes as well. I was thinking either the Romaleos 2 or the Adipowers.

To those guys who do have powerlifting shoes, what exercises do you wear them for? Do you do only squats? Or do you pretty much do your entire weightlifting workout in them?

I have a pair of Nike Romaleo 2 for powerlifting. Use them for squats (all types) and bench press. They're the best I've tried, feel super stable. I have the mobility to do the squats without the raised heels, but feel better in them. For deadlift, I have a pair of barefoot flat shoes (Innov8). For other exercises, I don't really care which shoes I wear, but I typically wear flat shoes outside of squats and bench.

I run in Vivobarefoot shoes, although not for very long distances usually (7~8km).

Although they're gamma as fuck Vibram 5-fingers are the best for strength and circuits. Really let you grip the floor and feel rooted.

I wear my Nike Romaleos 2 when I do Squats and Deadlifts. I keep them on when I do standing military presses as well.

Night and day difference vs. using running shoes. You'll wear out your running shoes super quick if you do squats/deads in them.

Yea, I have major issues doing squats because I lack ankle mobility + my gym shoes are very unstable. I also noticed the instability in my military press as well. I got a pair of Romaleos 2 coming this week. I cant wait to try them out.

+1 on Adidas powerlifting shoes. I think mine are Adidas Power Perfect. They're ugly as sin but they're great shoes for lifting in.

For non leg days, I use an old pair of Nike Free which I should probably update soon.

I'm thinking about replacing my old minimus with these skoras. They look pretty cool and might be really comfortable.

I know that I look like a jackass when I wear them, but I wear Vibram 5 fingers to the gym. If I forget to wear them for some reason I'll just take my shoes off when I'm doing deadlifts or squats.

I used to wear Nike cross trainers in the gym, but I switched over to Under Armour running shoes because they fit my foot like a condom. They aren't the coolest looking shoe, but they are super comfortable. They are also moderately light weight.

I can't find a picture mine online because they are an old model. I'd advise trying on a pair of UA though.

Olympic lifting shoes are great for lifting movements where you have to drive through your feet (i.e. squat, press, bench). The hard sole is incompressible similar to a dress shoe which means your base is more stable and you arent losing power from force absorption of a compressible sole like those found in a running shoe. This is the same reason people like lifting in chucks. The raised heel of a olympic shoe will help with olympic lifting movements and squatting as well

Look at how the guy sets up his lift at 5:35. His lower back is rounded when he's in flats - that's why he doesn't have as much power. If he worked on getting his hips and hamstrings a little looser and tightened up his core/lower back he could get similar power in flats.

New Gym Shoe Suggestions?

Hi, I did not want to start a new thread but I am planning to buy new gym shoes (I don't mind splurging a little):

I usually workout 5x a week: All the major lifts (squat, deadlift and press) and a light 20min run 2x a week. Right now I wear adidas toe shoes (adipure trainers) but now I see that they are out of the market. These are my favourites and felt stable enough to hit 330 in squat and 370 in deadlift (I weight 165), however they suck now (literally, the smell is awful and have washed them). Another added bonus is that a lot of people, including girls, opened me by looking at my shoes.

I was looking at Vibram Five Fingers but there's something about them that I do not like.

So I started to look at power/olympic shoes and found the Adidas adipower weightlifting shoes, they look beatiful:

But my question is: are they just for olympic lifts? I need something a little bit more versatile for my 20min cardio and I always walk to the gym (10minutes) and I do not want to carry two sets of shoes.

So, I found the "crossfit" shoes but with a lifter twist from Reebok:

The reviews are amazing, they seem versatile enough and with the support to continue lifting heavy and are cheaper. I am tempted to pull the trigger right now.

Do you guys have any advice?

I need a new gym shoe.

In the past, I've just taken whatever old shoes I had, and used those as my gym shoes, but now I'm doing a ton more running and leg exercises. As a consequence, the treads on my old shoes have actually worn off and I slide a bit when pushing a tire on flat surfaces. Plus, I'm just spending a lot more time at the gym.

Does anyone have suggestions for a good gym & running shoe?

I stumbled in this today.

For running, you should really determine if you have low/high arches, flat feet, and if you pronate or not.

A good running shop will be able to tell you this.

Another quick test you can do is to wet your bare foot and step on a piece of cardboard (foot should be damp, not soaking). You can also use a paper grocery bag.
Do a quick online search about wet foot imprints for runners and it will tell you what means what.

I wear neutral cushioned shoes for distance running. I have worn the same brand/model for nearly 10 years...if it works why switch it.

So I would try to find one that works for you and it also depends what terrain you're running on and how far. For marathon training, for instance, you'd not want a racing flat.

If I am able to run farther and faster through hard, consistent training (and not get injured or suffer undue aches and pains in the process) then I know that my shoe is doing it's job.
