Do any of you studs have advice on dress shirts with sweaters? Specifically, I'm 5'9", athletic build. If you could post good/bad and why, that'd be fantastic. I'm trying to spritz up my winter clothes with some more style.

A couple things I've read:

Crew sweaters are better for skinnier guys, v-necks better for bigger. From a style perspective, I'm looking to elongate my build to make me look slightly taller, so while I could do either, a v neck is probably better.

I like solid colors a lot, because they're easy, although I did just buy a nice brown argyle sweater I plan to wear.

Is it tough to really screw up? I try stuff on and don't really know, mostly because I've never dressed all that stylish.

Any advice for clothing for big muscular guys?

I love the hipster look but most of it looks pretty fucking retarded on a big ass guy. I tend to just wear jeans and Henley's in the fall, and jeans and t shirts in the summer since that's all I can find that tends to look right. However I'd like to find some other looks that work for me without looking like a bodybuilder in hipster/fashionista clothing.

A big thank-you for the tan brogues recommendation. I'm getting a little old for 'trainers with everything' and having read through this thread, I bought a very nice pair of brogues recently when I saw them half-price. Got loads of positive attention from the right sort of people at a night out recently. Many great tips in the rest of the thread also.

I think there is also an element of dressing for who you are.

I recently had quite a big change in status so for me dressing like the off season ski bum I used to dress like now requires something more befitting of my new status.

I'm currently in Italy and find myself shopping for smart shoes and shirts.

3 types of sweaters you should own, demonstrated by mcqueen

proper distressed bomber jacket by elon musk:

but probably the easiest way to look stylish in a "mainstream way" is a nice pair of blue jeans a little bit distressed (diesel), a white v-neck, brown leather shoes and a long black pea-coat

I disagree, but you gotta think outside the box.

Do NOT do the white-toast ass looking v-neck-sweater-and-shirt/tie combo:

But, if you've got the chops, DO do a dress shirt/tie with a cardigan/shawl (extra points if you can pull off the big fluffy knit cardigan):

A good sweater/dress shirt look requires you to be slightly eccentric. You can't look try hard. It looks best if you play with cool colors and thread pattern combos that really look neat together. I love fluffy-ass sweaters and shawls.

EDIT:

I think the point of contention with "hipster" style discussed here is that a large percentage of men identify caring about fashion with being feminine. "Only faggots care about what's 'in' or focus so much on putting a contemporary looking outfit together."

I can see both sides of the argument - lots of men care more about wearing clothes that simply look good on them individually rather than caring about if they are being fashion-forward or style relevant with what is trendy nowadays. I for one am a bit of a counter-culturalist when it comes to many things including pop-culture and fashion trends. One reason is you can't stick out if you are just going along with what others are doing, and the other is that you feel like a fucking sheep if you are just going along with what others are doing. It's the old conundrum of changing things about your life--style, social behavior, philosophies, etc.--are you trying to be someone you are not, or are you just evolving as a person?

I know when I see a group of aviator-boat-shoe-khaki-shorts bros I just get the impression they are all a bunch of cunts. Maybe I'm just really misanthropic and cynical but whatever. I know I'm not one to rock desert boots or boat shoes for sure.

I still feel this way about fashion/identity philosophy, but I definitely fuck with desert boots and all kinds of other shit nowadays.

No hate but every pic in the OP the guys look like total squares.

Here is some better advice (check my rep, posts, etc. to get an idea of who I am):

1. Dress like you are somebody that gets laid (while still being somewhat true to yourself)

The pics from the OP - they all look like "nice guys" or some hipster dude who reads too much "r/MaleFashionAdvice"

Some looks girls like include:

"High-powered businessman"

"Badboy"

2. Related to above - dress like a somebody

All the pics from OP look like some dude whose name you will forget after 5 minutes.

Don't "peacock" a la Mystery/Style but don't just be some guy wearing e.g. [generic dress shirt] + [chino pants] + [generic shoes]

Like this guy (which is most guys you see out on any given night)

3. More body = less style needed

Guy with t-shirt

Guy with t-shirt (other shit too but just focus on the shirt)

(Same for being good-looking - more looks = less style needed)

4. Wear slim/skinny fit - unless you're fat (then lose weight)

^ Reminds me of any "PUA" running around spam approaching daygame thinking "game" will solve all his problems

5. Wear the right colors - preferably matching and "masculine" (not baby blue, pink, etc.)

[Image: high-contrast-outfit-for-high-contrast-guy.webp]

Example of what I mean by matching - e.g. if you have "higher contrast" (something like light-medium skin and dark hair) wear high contrast outfits. But "masculine" colors are probably more important (as long as they don't look shit on you)

6. Accessorize (including tattoos)

Welcome to 2019. Girls (especially in the West, or at least the US) are pretty much brainwashed to like badboys, tattoos, (and to a lesser extent rings, necklaces, piercings, and so on)

You aren't getting laid because you still believe in "game".
