I suppose that I was in my pre-teens or early teens during the atari period with breakout, space invaders, packman and asteriods.

I also recall riding a banana bike in my preteens. I remember one time taking a jump with the banana bike and the cheap seat broke (the two adjustment bars holding it up in the back), so I had to ride the bike three miles before I could make some kind of patchwork fix of it. I was kind of adventurous in attempting various fixes that upon reflexion were probably half-assed at best (but we were NOT much into new things or throwing things away, but instead repairing what we had, if possible).

My friends and i we were always doing all kinds of repairs and modifications to our bikes. I remember my mother buying me a Huffy for my birthday and within seconds of seeing it i was already making a mental list of what was going to be gotten rid of to make it lighter and cooler looking.

hahaha... those huffy's were fucked up bikes (and I think they still kind of are). They were heavy and cheap materials, but they were generally affordable for regular folks (and I came from a family of regular folks, and we were lucky to get anything new rather than a hand-me-down or some bargain that my mom found at a rummage sale or some salvageable item that my dad (or one of my dad's buddy's) found in the trash.

Actually one of my dad's cousins managed one of the main county garbage sites, and my dad frequently received items from his cousin that were "completely and perfectly" good items that caused curiosity about why anyone would throw them away. hehehehe

Then my dad would spend the next several days attempting to get the "completely and perfectly) good item(s) to work with various make-shift measures.

Hutch Trickstars were the top bmx bikes in the 80's. Then after that I think it went GT's, Diamond Backs, Predators, Redlines, and Mongooses... and anything with mag wheels. I had some great bikes that weren't typical in my neighborhood: Stomper, Torker, and Thruster.

I always had to always change out the handgrips for banana grips. Always had to have pegs and metal caps, too. I could hold a wheelie for blocks. Loved making wood ramps to jump off of.

The best moment of my day today: clicking on this thread and immediately seeing a picture of Lego. My brother and I spent easily hundreds (if not thousands) of hours playing with Lego.

Cool shit from my youth: skateboarding, discovering new punk and metal bands, hanging out with my bro and my other brother from another mother (so many good times), reading Thrasher, going to Ramp Riot, original Star Wars trilogy, heaps of great horror films.

I read it hundreds of times before my parents bought me Pokémon Blue the next month. I picked Bulbasaur (obviously) and never lost one battle to anyone at school. They had Charizard, sure, but at that point I had six Mewtwos at level 100. Eventually no one wanted to battle me. I can't say that I blamed them, not everyone was cut out to be a Pokémon Master.

Cool Shit From Your Childhood/Youth Thread

My most treasured memories of childhood weren't objects, it'll always be the glorious long summer evenings after school when me and my buddies would skip doing homework and just go out and, well, explore. Play. Build 'bases' or dens out of discarded bricks or wood. Play enormous games of runouts or tag in sprawling warehouse districts or woodland areas. Go to all the places that our parents forbid us from going. Football in the park using our jackets as the goalposts, and arguing for hours over what constituted as over the imaginary crossbar.

Never really caring about the weather or getting muddy or sometimes the danger we put ourselves in. Doing boy stuff, challenging eachother to feats of daring, being annoying if girls tried to tag along and ruined everything with their whining. Stealing sweets from the local shop and going and sitting on the swings enjoying our spoils. Seeing how far we could cycle before sunset and stumbling across an abandoned dirt bike track. Finding an enormous stash of porno magazines by the railway and thinking it was the most exciting thing in the world. *

That's my clearest and fondest memory; just a sense of relentless adventure. Just always wanting to see something new; every gap in a fence was a place to explore, every unknown estate was an experience. Adulthood sucks compared to that.

*(seriously who was it that left porno magazines everywhere. I know a lot of people in this country that share that childhood experience; porn abandoned in a park or just in bushes)

So much nostalgia in this thread it hurts.

Since Legos were already mentioned:

And a bunch of hand-me down stuff my brother gave me.

My friends and I used to play around in our yards with realistic-looking toy guns. If you did that these days cops would be called and you'd probably end up shot.

Yep... I have had a few experiences running across porn in my teenage years and even looking forward to finding these kinds of stashes - actually, even into my 20s. Internet porn did NOT really become easy for me in my timeline until I was into my 30s.... so all of that printed porn was fairly mild compared to the internet porn that we can find these days and in the past 20 years.

in the printed versions of the 70s, 80s and even into the 90s, full nudes of girls and sex with out penetration (almost touching) was fairly provocative.

I suppose the mentality of adults can be changed in considerable ways based on these kinds of childhood backgrounds.

Based on my family and the friends of my family, there were times when I was forced to include girls in the playing in my pre-teenage years, and so sometimes, if there were boys and girls around, the playing would revert to sexual role playing - even though the hormones did NOT really kick in for me until I was a teenager and those hormones seemed to become more and more raging for me in my 20s (there may be some socialization involved with the intensity of the hormones rather than actual physicality?)

Also, actually once having sex, then would cause more and more thinking about possibilities of more sex, but even my early sexual encounters in my teens were fairly awkward, so it seems to my recollection that I did NOT become really raging in my hormones until I had several sexual experiences with a variety of women, and that was more in my early to mid twenties that I got some of those experiences.

I think that there is a difference between being formulated by experiences and hearing from guys who have been formulated by other experiences, and sometimes when I read about guys here having really difficulties with internet porn because of the ease and availability of it in their pre-teen and teenage years, I can kind of understand the situation, even though my experiences were much different because of the fact that porn was kind of hard to come by and it was sort of a rare event to see it in my preteens and even through my teenage years.

Holy shit, I remembered a friend lent me the Queen Alien figure for a whole lunch recess one day in grade 1. I would chase girls around and scare them with the extended jaws. I had the Drake figure too.

Thanks for the trip down memory lane spokepoker!!

Climbing trees in the neighborhood. I was 9 and climbing 30+ feet in trees with a friend. I'd have a heart attack if my kids did that in a few years.

Walking, running, sitting on the roof of my house... and jumping off of it.

Playing wiffle ball.

Playing 500 in the street.

Catching butterflies and bees with a net in a field.

Seeing lightning bugs summer nights. (Never have seen them since moving to Florida and now Texas.)

Catching garden snakes in alleys.

Removing sewer covers and hiding in the drains.

Running barefoot through 1-2 foot pools of puddles by the streets in the days before the curbs were put in and drainage was bad.

Ding dong ditching neighbors.

Flying kites in the spring.

The ominous sound of the mosquito spraying truck driving by summer nights.

Rolling apples, from an apple tree across the street, under cars driving by.

Saturday morning cartoons.

Bozo buckets.

Getting home from school and watching Get Smart.

Water balloon fights.

The once-a-year field day competitions in grade school.

Singing Christmas songs at school in front of our parents.

Getting small milks sent to our classroom in a big tray twice a day... once mid-morning and once with lunch. And also being one of the people to actually organize and deliver that to classrooms when I was in 6th grade. We didn't have cafeterias back then. You brought your own lunch.

Cool metal lunchboxes with all sorts of cartoon characters on them.

Having hot dog day, pizza day, and sloppy joes days in our classroom.

Getting white pants because of Miami Vice.

Playing arcade games at the mall arcade, 7-eleven, and other places. Put a lot of quarters in those machines.

Collecting baseball cards when they were actually worth something.

Exploring by riding our bikes more than a mile away from home. The bmx bike you had was like a status symbol.

Class/school field trips... Nutcracker ice show, museums, the zoo, Great America, Jay's Potato chips manufacturing plant, local jail (lol), etc.

Exchanging Valentine's Day cards and candy with classmates.

Going door-to-door trying to sell cheese and other little crockpot things through the school, for a multiple sclerosis or Alzheimer's charity that had a dog as a mascot, in order to win cool prizes.

Going door-to-door trying to sell huge $1 chocolate bars to fundraise for our little league but always ending up selling most from my mom selling to people at her work. Also ended up eating a lot of those chocolate bars myself and having to pay.

Having a PennySaver paper route for 3 blocks and getting paid something like $25-30 a month. Got sick of it and started dumping papers in peoples bushes. Also stupidly wasted my time going door-to-door to collect contributions from people for the free paper.

Going to a kazoo club with my sister. lol.

Eating McDonald's, White Castle, Burger King, Taco Bell, or Wendy's once in a while when it was considered a rare treat.

Running around with a friend meeping girls with titties when we were 12 and 13. Do that today and see what happens. Ha.
