Bogota: Tell me about Unicentro neighborhood...

might be staying with a friend in this area, but I don't want to call the friend out by asking her if it is a shady area...what are your opinions on it?

It certainly is not an affluent neighborhood, but I would not say extremely dangerous either. It's in between. Follow obvious precautions when stepping out and coming home late night/early mornings.

Unicentro is a big barrio, so it is difficult to answer your question without knowing exactly what section of Unicentro she is in.

You should be fine so long as you don't go there trying to "make it rain" where everyone can see wealth or being careless with valuables. Which I'm sure you won't be.

thanks for the reply! so you are sayin' I can't wear my gators? And as an fyi, I am just going to stay on my own (smart move) and here is the description of the location of the apt:

"Bogotá's Financial District, Centro Commercial Parque Central Bavaria"

The apartment is sweet. got tons of 'contacts' for my trip too...this should be a good one. After my stay here I may hit up cali or medellin...

That area itself is pretty much exactly what you think of when you think generic city streets.

But you're not fat from La Macarena, which is a kinda trendy/bohemian area near a big University that has lots of good restaurants with reasonable prices ($10-15 a plate). Also Parque Nacional isn't that far a walk. Good access to transmilenio, if you're that kinda guy.

In that area you can dress however you want during the day. If you're coming back late at night just make sure the taxi drops you off right outside the door and you just go in. Do you speak Spanish?

Thing is there are lots of oportunistic thieves who might pass by a dozen of people and juts try to get the easy targets. Clueless gringo in a nice suit sure sounds like an easy target, so just don't be that. Walk with confidence and tell ñeros off firmly but calmly.
