Ecommerce platforms and dropshipping question

Do you recommend using a platform (bigcommerce) or hiring someone to build a custom site?

Do you recommend using middle men drop shippers (Doba)? Which one?

If not what are some suggestions for finding legitimate manufacturers or wholesalers?

Do you do your SEO manually or use a software?

I am looking to start one or two Ecommerce sites and have been learning quite a bit over the last year, but I am still torn on what is worth the money vs what is worth the time. Google searching for drop shippers and wholesale distributors is a waste of time in my opinion because they are all middle men. Any other tips on the most cost effective launch or operations are greatly appreciated.

In my experience most drop shippers I find when blindly shipping are generally scams or want you to pay to join and don't even have that great of products or prices.

I think alot of people think drop shipping ecommerce is passive income. I'm not that familiar with it. I'm sure you can probably automate most of your business but I imagine you still at the end of everyday have to figuree out what sold and somehow pass your orders and customer info over to the drop shipper. Your still probably responsible as well for answering customers questions and inquiries about shipping status and tracking numbers.

With drop shippers your somewhat giving up some control over your business as well as your relying on a third party.

I would recommend rather than seeking out drop shippers specifically you figure out a product or niche you want to sell in and start reaching out to those companies and seeing if you can be an authorized reseller and have them drop ship for you.

Look at ebay and all the chinese crap mp3 players and junk like that. Those are all from either chinese companies or people using them as drop shippers. How are you going to compete when the source is competing against you as well as 100 other people buying crap products from the same company.

If you reach out to a company indepenently and convince them you as an authorized reseller having them drop ship can raise business for them. Since your not one in a million dropshippers for them you can probably negotiate yourself a better commission or better prices than a structured program. Also you have more products and companies at your disposal since you can reach out to anyone you want. I did this with a longboard company and also a ukulele company in years past.

My current ecommerce business I hold inventory and pack all my own orders. My supplier offered to drop ship for me for $5 per order. On bigger orders this would be pretty lucrative but on smalller stuff which is the majority of my orders it would basically take too big a cut of my profits.

Ecommerce platforms and dropshipping question

I currently have my own start-up e-commerce company. Here are some answers to your questions on what I did to start.

1. As for platform I got someone to design my niche-product website on Wordpress, which is of course free, and I'm selling my product on amazon so the buy button on my website is linked to the amazon listing. But you can also get a shopping cart plugin if you want to sell from you website.

However once my business takes off and I can afford a better platform I think i may go to Shopify.com I have heard from others its better than Big commerce.

2. Don't have a lot of experience with droppshipping, but i'm looking into it.

3. I actually did use Google to search for manufacturers/wholesalers all you simply do is search: *product name* wholesaler, *product name* manufacturer, and *product name* white label. This should get you to the suppliers which are horrible at advertising so you have to search for them. You should browse the first 3 pages on Google and contact at least 3-5 suppliers to find the best price or get them in a bidding war for you business (game works everywhere).

Also you can use sites like Alibaba.com or Aliexpress to find suppliers of different manufactured goods. Just know that most, not all, of their manufacturers are in china so their english will not be the best, sometimes it will sometimes it won't. And you should also explicitly express you want "high quality items" and nothing less because it is there custom to save you money so if they have an item that is of lower quality and lower price they will give you that instead of the higher quality one. In america we see this as being screwed by a sleazy manufacture but they see it as saving you money (you have accept our business cultures are different, but as long as you make clear to them exactly what you want you should be fine-treat them like children you have to be crystal clear and consistent in you orders)

4. For SEO I buy gigs on Fiverr for "backlinking" and "keyword research" simply because i don't have the time or the knowledge on how to do that. Of course, you can also use Elance pending on your budget. The quality though is about the same (from my experience thus far). You should have a blog on your website because the google algorithm will rank sites higher that have regular activity (SEO trick so you don't have to constanly spen money on beating the Google algo bot, which i hear can be time consuming and expensive since most businesses use an SEO company).

These are things that I am currently doing you can give em a try. I hope I helped you.

P.S if you product is something that goes on or in the body (e.g. skin creams or supplements) then it must be sourced from the U.S.

Ecommerce platforms and dropshipping question

I've just sold my digital marketing agency based in London, UK. We had clients in 4 continents - some being global corporations.

Listen when I tell you you're going about this the wrong way. I'll answer your questions first.

Do you recommend using a platform (bigcommerce) or hiring someone to build a custom site?

Any feature you need from your site will already be built in to the main shopping carts or available as a paid plugin/add-on. Getting a custom backend built for a site is overkill 99% of the time. As you're new to this it definitely is. Custom backends require constant maintenance to ensure your site stays safe from attacks, plus if there's bugs/problems/you need a new feature built later down the line you only have 1 person to turn to who knows the system inside out. Going with an existing cart will mean you have hundreds of freelancers on hand who can help and you know your site will be constantly updated to adhere to the latest security policies etc.

I recommend Shopify if you're looking for a hosted solution and Magento for self-hosted. If you're unsure of the difference go with Shopify. It's incredibly easy to set-up and manage and is infinitely scalable - simple enough for a beginner to learn on yet won't restrict you later down the line during periods of growth.

Do you recommend using middle men drop shippers (Doba)? Which one?

No. You're building a business. You're giving a crucial aspect of your business away by doing so.

Will they ship your products on time? Will they brand the packaging in your name? Will they slip in a flyer or 2 of their own so your customer can go direct next time? Will they allow you to put marketing material in with the order to increase brand awareness, customer retention and encourage repeat orders? Who handles returns? What volume of orders can they handle per day?

I've lost count of the number of times 'White Label Dropshippers' have burnt clients by stealing their customers. If you want to be successful in this business you need to commit. Scared of MOQ from wholesalers because you're not sure the business will work so you think drop shipping is the perfect solution, right?

It's a pipe dream. Don't buy in. They target people like you - new to the industry that want to jump on the internet money making phenomenon. Of course, there are exceptions...which brings us to your next question.

If not what are some suggestions for finding legitimate manufacturers or wholesalers?

Build relationships. Find local businesses/manufacturers with a great product that don't have the know-how to take it online. Any wholesale/dropship directory is a waste of your time. That product has probably been through 4/5 different middlemen with each one taking a slice of your margin. Take a good look at the prices on those directories and places like Alibaba etc. Then look what the product is selling for on eBay. Minus eBay's fees, Paypal's fees, shipping, packaging and I bet you won't even be able to come close to that pricing without making a loss on each unit.

Go direct, build relationships and offer them what they can't do themselves. By the way, no one will tell you where to find a good wholesaler on the internet. The ones worth anything don't advertise, don't have websites and you won't find them anywhere online.

The other option is to build a brand and manufacture your own branded product. It doesn't have to be better than everything else out there and you don't have to reinvent the wheel. If you build your brand properly the perceived value will mean you can charge more than the competition and have full control over the entire process...ie. you can build an actual business.

Do you do your SEO manually or use a software?

First of all, don't build your site for the search engines, think bigger. Building an entire business resting on another company is a flawed business plan. But that's a post in it's own right.

I can tell from your question that you're out of your depth here. The days of SENuke spamming 100k links overnight as part of a link pyramid, keyword stuffing h1 tags and ranking for 'payday loans' the next week are so far gone. Aside from a press release you shouldn't be purchasing any links. Any gains you do make in the search engines will be temporary if you go this route. Unless you're churning and burning hundreds of sites a month this will never be viable for you. Get links that bring traffic and potential customers...not for SEO.

Build a brand and offer compelling content and products that people want to share. Reach out to authority sites in your niche and offer to write an article then drop in a link to your site. You could step this up and outsource the process with a VA building the list of prospects in your niche and reaching out via email, a copywriter creating the articles, then the VA uploading and managing the relationship. Again, building an actual business.

Any other tips on cost effective launch etc etc etc?

Back to my original point. You're going about it all wrong. If I were you this would be my plan from here:
  • Find a niche where you understand the market, the potential customer's pain points and how to reach them.
  • Conduct competitor analysis. What do they do well? What can you improve on? Potential USP?
  • Decide what image your brand will portray. High-end luxury or cheap and cheerful?
  • Create a Shopify account. Purchase a theme from their resources page that fits brand image.
  • Get a logo made that fits brand image. You can find a freelancer on eLance or oDesk to suit your needs.
  • Write/outsource copy for site. About page, contact etc.
  • Find generic products in your niche to upload to your site. Note: you're not actually selling them at this point, if you magically get any orders refund them.
  • To the outside world you now have a fully fledged brand that sells products in your niche. So now when you approach manufacturers from their point of view you're looking to expand your existing offering of your successful e-commerce business rather than trying to start an online/eBay business based on the hype like every other clueless guy that approaches them 5 times a day.
  • Close the deal. Remove the fake products you set up.
Obviously this is at an incredibly basic level and there's tons of stuff that I've missed out. But it's an actionable plan that will put you on the right path. Excluding the deal with the manufacturer, you could have all the above done in a day and for under £50. You will then be at a point where you can get stuck in to marketing your business and making your first sale - again, a post in it's own right.

The big internet money bubble popped a long time ago. If you treat your online ventures like a hobby you will never get anywhere. Build a business with a strong brand.

Throw yourself in to it. You said you've been researching. Now's the time to stop thinking about it and actually do something.

Enjoy.

Ecommerce platforms and dropshipping question

GIJOE106,
what you are talking about is exactly why I decided to found Mens Business Association. The majority of men in business have skills, talents, products etc that are pretty good. They range of course but most guys do pretty well at their permanent job. Be they plumbers, electricians, brick layers, programmers, you name it.

What they are NOT good at is marketing their products and services. They are even worse at settling disputes and they hand over far too much money to lawyers.

I really am one of the top Business Intelligence consultants in the world and I really am an expert in using the information in a business to optimise the business. Lots of people call me a "fraud" and tell the lie that I am "trying to scam money off them for a book" when the fact is my clients have been very large companies for more than 20 years.

I decided that one thing that would really help a LOT of men is to create the Mens Business Association where we would have large numbers of men register and then buy/sell on the MBA platform with disputes managed by MBA Law Services.

Men know that men men can provide lots of great products and services....and there is always the point that men like Jeff Bezos, Mark Zuckerberg, Eric Schmidt, Larry Page, Segy Brin etc openly support women committing crimes in the family courts. So why are men buying their stuff and supporting mens companies that screw men over in divorce? Or have "affirmative action" and will hire a less qualified woman over a more qualified man?

MBA has been slow because men are so suspicious of other men today. Everyone thinks anyone who is starting a business is a scammer. Men here even call me a "scammer". Yeah, the only scammer in the world to video record a family law matter and put it on YT.

The idea of MBA is that we will use my software and skills to build the marketing database of registered members and the resources of our business partner in germany if we need for hosting...or other man friendly companies for hosting.

The main point is that there are tens of thousands of bright young men out there who would like to have a go at starting their own businesses. They face a gamut of scammers and opportunists any one of whom might bring them down. They face legislation and guvmints who can easily bring them down any time they choose and we have all see that.

Sooner or later men are going to have to realise that the only way to have a solid business the guvmint can not take off you is to have one that operates outside the jurisdiction of the guvmint....and that is what we are doing. Unfortunately...it is not popular yet...but it will be...it is inevitable...young men are starting to realise that the first economy is a total scam in larger and larger numbers.

The tens of thousand of young men who want to create businesses or work in successful businesses are well advised to co-operate and collaborate rather than to compete. If they compete with each other as they do today? They will be easy pickings for the guvmints and the scammers.

I second shopify. I have been into eCommerce for years and hate paying for a platform but shopify is the best if your going to pay, and they have built in merchant processing which is my fav.

I decided for Bigcommerce after comparing it to Shopify. Both should still have a free trial, just give both a shot and compare the plans carefully and see what suits you best. Either way will be a good choice to get started. Long-term I guess the self-hosted way with Magento is the best way to go as you have some more control and do not need to pay extra for every little feature.
