I like rockin the skinny ties as well. I think it's a shrewd choice for you Subutai, you being in your Wizards stage. It definitely looks more younger.

A few more styles that I think would put you in a different class from 95% of the men, ESPECIALLY any country North or East of Berlin.

Compare this to the style of average guys in the US (or England / Oz for that matter)...

G, I know suits have been your thing forever and they work great for you... but a few questions:

- Have you noticed certain venues or cities where being suited down wouldn't be an advantage or may even be a disadvantage? Like maybe you could come off as a cheesy Wall Street guy or something.

- Do you think there's a big drop off in results with quality of suit. For instance, can a guy pick up a $200-300 suit that looks decent and get 90% of the results of a guy in a custom made suit?

- Are there countries that respond better to suits than others in your experience?

Entropy, excellent "buying" questions.

My prediction is you will be Suited Down in no time.

I just saw this and you inspired me to write a quick post answering your questions and a few others that I recieved a while back: How to Wear a Custom Suit Questions http://www.thegmanifesto.com/2011/01/how...tions.html

subutai ,

Yeah, I would say you would be in a different class for sure. I rarely if ever see cats dressed like that.

Interesting jackets in both those pictures. No peaks or notches in the lapel. Basically those are tuxedo jackets in a nuevo steez. Do you know who made those?

First one is not my steez, and the vest is kind of trippy. Second one could come up Aces for sure.

The third picture, needs no explanation.

Next time I am in Barcelona I am going to suit up and hit some high end venues.

Which night is "Brazilian night"? I dropped the ball on that one.

Yeah, check out my Barcelona Data Sheet for night spots to roll Suited Down to. Let me know how it goes. I love that place.

Great post G.

This thread and that post have inspired me to add this to my "To Do in 2011" list: Buy the nicest suit I can afford, get it tailored, and wear it out in a few cities... will see what happens and report back.

I am depressed, trying to order a grey suit from some UK retailers and they do not ship to Canada. WTF

For those in the USA, you are in luck. Well if you live in NYC you can always check out Paul Smith.

Subutai, you are on the money once again. The north american baggy suit look is so lame, it is all about the fitted suit.

Rude, MTL has arguably the best fashion/shopping in NA. You can find all sorts of selection from local designers (cheaper than you think) to outlets (Simon's has a lot of great stuff) to your typical designer wear. And, much of it is cheaper than TO.

A lot of people in TO routinely go to MTL for shopping and partying. Just something to consider.

G -- all the photos were either Burberry or Armani -- generally my preferred brands as they fit me fairly well and I have not had a chance to get anything custom-made.

I also hit the town tonight fully suited with vest and tie along with a natural friend of mine who definitely outclasses me in both looks and game. He was dressed casually. For the first time ever, I was getting significantly more approach invitations from women than him. In fact, it was overwhelming.

rudebwoy -- If you're on a budget, I think you can get something from Zara that's suitable. Everything they sell there is European fitted...in fact, at least in the US, I rarely find any "plus-sized" people shopping at Zara. There's just no reason these days to look like the dude on the left.

Sundays if I remember correctly. And I went there in 2006 so things might have changed. But the good thing is about Bikini was that Sunday nights were better than Saturdays and Fridays.

I checked out your post. looks like I was hitting all the wrong spots, I heard a lot about sutton but never went there.

I looks like you are a big Barcelona fan too, good to know!

I agree. If you are a thin dude then Zara is a close as you can get to a custom suit as far the fit is concerned.

No dude - here's a little secret - especially in the days of globalism - you can get a custom suit for about what a mid range suit would cost, pre tailoring expense. its not that hard to find a guy who will take all your measurements after you pick the fabric, style, etc and send it abroad. it goes back and forth a couple times to get the fit perfected and the kinks ironed out but its global wage arbitrage at its finest.

Awesome posts about suiting and rolling on a custom made suit G and Subutai. Here's another option guys that you should consider:
Instead of paying 3-5k for a nice custom made suit in the US/Canada, get to Asia (BKK is good for that as well as Hong Kong and other places in SEA) and have a very nice one made for you for about 5-600 bucks. The same suit that would cost you 3-5K in North America can be had for 600 tops plus you're having a ball in an awesome place. Before I return to Canada, I'll definitely have a couple nice custom suits made for me here in BKK.

Luckystar, spot on and totally agree with you that Montreal is the fashion capital of North America and that there are some good deals to be had there.

Add Brasil to the list as well...I'm out here right now and It's a douche bag festival here in Sao Paulo with all the Abercombie & Fitch and other wack surf gear people sport out here at the clubs.

I never tried the "suited and booted" look before when I go about town, I only really wear suits for weddings and funerals. I seldom see young guys rocking suits in the club outside of the bouncers in NYC. I will try it out next time I am out. Noob question for the suit veterans travelers, Do you travel with more than one suit? And what you guys do about ironing?

This will cover you on keeping your suit crisp, and doesn't take much room in the luggage. Steaming your own suit saves wear and tear and the 2-3 day turn around from using the cleaners. I personally take two suits on trips, of different colors.

Luckystar - you know what dude, I am long overdue for a MTL trip. I use to be a regular up there and I guess I have been too focused on my next overseas trip. That department store you mentioned Simmons (sp) I have bought stuff there before.

I was in Zara yesterday, but sadly I am a bit buffed to wear those jackets. I did see a nice three pc suit in there though, I want to wear the jacket and vest but tone it down with a nice pair of jeans.

Fuck yeah. The suit will look like the box your Maytag fridge came in. And the quality of fabric? LOL.

I'm talking from personal experience, having a suit made in Thailand. There are some important rules which make the difference. First, don't go for $99 suits - it will cost you that much, but the quality would be exactly as you described. This is where the tricks are played (they show you one fabric when you are choosing, and then use another to make a suit). Even though labor it cheap there, good fabric still costs money. Second, ask the local expats to recommend you the tailor, there are good ones and bad ones who'd try to rip you off. And, of course, making a quality suit takes time, if you ask for overnight service they will make it but it won't fit you the best. Expect the good quality custom suit to cost between 300-500 USD with 1:30 exchange rate, take at least 2-3 fittings and 3-4 days to complete.

Quote:Quote:

DON'T get suits made in Asia. Their style is totally different, and the stitching sucks...big pockets, baggy thighs, and tight pant cuffs.

You choose the style yourself (again, don't go for $99 suits). The tailor I went to had a large catalog which included most 2010 collections. They are also very good of copying the designs, so locals recommended to bring them one suit/pants you really like, and they could make an exact copy. Stitching is very good - as I said, don't use crappy tailors and do not request overnight service. I was asked about pocket sizes and how fitting I want the pants to be, so this is definitely customizable. However you need to know what exactly you want.

G and Subutai thanks a lot for Inspiring other members of the Forum.

I started wearing suits one size smaller and started getting better responses, I like British cuts better and have a Bureberry and Burton suit (One cheap and one is expensive and both fit better then the american suits)

One question for the experienced cats ...

How about getting a suit that fits you the best and getting it altered by a Tailor like getting sleeve width's shorter, coat tight at hip, etc and the million dollar question who is that tailor and how do you find him in your city.

I am in dire need of a good Tailor as suits that I bought 2 yrs ago are needing alterations as I have lost weight and Slimmer suits are starting to look better.

On yes and one more imortant question SHIRTS, all shirts here in US have too much extra garment, I would like the shirts to fit me like Bullet proof vest, What do I do, Custom tailor again or are there some brands that make nice slim fit shirts, tried Banana republics slim fit but the collars are horrible.

One contribution .......GQ did a nice Style manual in Oct 2010 that changed my suit game for the better

Lot of Style Advice for $ 10, bought this from Barnes and Noble but I think it's still available online.

Shirts: once again I can recommend Zara, as everything of theirs is European cut. Also, some stores you can get button-down shirts that are "fitted cut" instead of regular.

I usually just side-step all of this though and buy my clothes in Europe (London, Paris or Amsterdam). Europeans are usually 1-2 years ahead of us fashion-wise anyway.

for tailors, check yelp.com for your area. i found a great one this way. i'm getting a lot of my shirts refitted right now, i take him a shirt that fits me the best and he uses that as a guideline and gets my other shirts to fit the same way.

Great custom-suit post G,

I have a question about how you pack though. Packing lists for the nomadic/backpacker types (like this one) aren't hard to find, but you have different needs and requirements for your travel as a G.

It would be very helpful for you to outline your standard gear for International Playboy travel like what bags you use, how many and what clothes, etc

Thanks for posting this, I'll be in Pattaya next week and I'll check them out. For BKK, a good tailor I've used numerous times to do custom shirts for me is Prince Tailors on Soi 3 (Soi Nana). Very good and honest tailor with fast and reliable service, which is not a given in BKK. Their site is http://www.princetailors.com

I just put some more Suited Down Questions on a post:

http://www.thegmanifesto.com/2011/01/mor...-down.html

Entropy4,

"This thread and that post have inspired me to add this to my "To Do in 2011" list: Buy the nicest suit I can afford, get it tailored, and wear it out in a few cities... will see what happens and report back."

Nice work. My prediction is that Entropy will kill it and then become a huge Suited Down advocate. I can tell you are mentally ready for the next level of the Game and all the benefits that come with it.

docsedated,

"who is that tailor and how do you find him in your city."

Its truly a dying art especially outside of the major cities in America. I would find the sharpest dressed cat you can find and ask him. Even stop him on the street. Hell, people do it to me.

Subati,

"I also hit the town tonight fully suited with vest and tie along with a natural friend of mine who definitely outclasses me in both looks and game. He was dressed casually. For the first time ever, I was getting significantly more approach invitations from women than him. In fact, it was overwhelming."

Yeah, amazing as it may seem, this kind of stuff is actually standard procedure.

Going Suited Down is a great equalizer against formidable competition. Hell, I have defeated pro athletes and celebs while I was Suited Down and they were dressed like slobs at best or people with suspect sexual preferences at worst.

I have written about this subject a lot, most recently here: http://www.thegmanifesto.com/2010/12/bra...suits.html

phoenix abroad,

"you have different needs and requirements for your travel as a G.

It would be very helpful for you to outline your standard gear for International Playboy travel like what bags you use, how many and what clothes, etc"

Yeah, I have been meaning to write on this subject forever as there is zero info on the Internet (like most of the subjects I write on) and I think it would be real helpful for people.

Honestly, I hate packing so much (another reason I don't like to jump around from city to city when I travel) that the subject itself makes me not want to write about it.

I probably will do it soon though.

I have some nice British make shirts but they have some excess garment and I am going to give a tailor a try, Thanks again .......

Thanks to G also, keeping the forum interest in suits, I know you said you will post it later but I am looking for a Luggage piece that can hold atleast 2 suits , 2 pairs of shoes plus the other stuff good for a 3-7 day trip or do you take 2 pieces of luggage , 1 suiter for suits and shoes and other for rest of the stuff......

G I am anxiously awaiting intel on this.......... and am thanking you in Anticipation.

While you are at it what about accessories like Pocket squares, Tie bars, Cuff links etc , Suggest some good sites to buy from, I looked at at this site and accessories are available at budget price and a`player on the rise can get his wardrobe established .........
