The "All Things Freelance" Thread

A lot of people recommend having a blog to show on your portfolio.

I have a blog but it's kind of red pill. Do you think it will cause trouble with Upwork, as these kinds of sites are usually run by SJWs?

Ya, you don't want to associate any red pill views with your work persona. Not yet anyway.

For those of you on Upwork who need some 5 star reviews to get your profile jumpstarted, talk to me.

I'm in need of some amazon product reviews. I'd have you buy a $3 product on amazon, and then I'd hire you on upwork for the same amount of money. Then we leave each other glowing reviews.

PM me if interested.

Sounds like a great idea, BD, but I worry Amazon and UpChuck are onto these ways of boosting ratings.

Anyone willing to help me write a nice cover letter for Upwork job applications? I always feel that I'm too formal, or sometimes too informal. I don't know.

Anyone doing copywriting in here? I want to get started with some freelance jobs. Do you know a good place to try (aisde from Fiverr, I suppose) and also anyone want to trade tips and read sales letters, etc.? I've been practicing this sort of thing for a while but I don't want to start out poorly and get a bad rep.

Does anyone here have experience creating the visual design for a commercial package? My client already has the dimensions of the box for a product his startup is creating and needs someone to help with the design and branding.

If you're a designer with experience in this space, please get in touch and let me know your rates, preferably with examples of your work on hand.

I haven't gone through all the pages of this thread yet, but if it hasn't been mentioned yet you can check out Freedom With Writing. It's essentially an email service that gives you weekly emails about different online publishers who are actively seeking submissions. A lot of them are journals for super specific topics, but you might get lucky.

Bump. Would anyone be able to hire me on Upwork to help be build reputation there? I have a profile and I'm trying to get a foothold by bidding on a ton of jobs cheaply or virtually for free - mind you, we're talking useful/serious jobs where someone should be really happy to get them done professionally yet for free - yet no one seems to be biting. From what I can see, every single job listing immediately experiences a deluge of people with hundreds of good ratings and no one else afterwards is even considered.

Also, how does one boost their reputation in this fashion without getting detected and banned by Upwork? Is it very risky to attempt such a thing?

Anyways, if you can help me with this I'd of course A) return you your money through PayPal or Payoneer immediately and B) be glad to reciprocate with some free work for whatever I can help you with. My areas are:

Reputation Management
Research
Data Processing
Editing
Content Writing
Copywriting
Social Media Management

Any advice appreciated.

I would offer to help, but I've been banned from Upwork... for life. No explanation whatsoever.

I think getting another friend on Upwork to give you a job and a review isn't that risky. But do be careful what you say in their platform messager, pretend you don't know each other, don't give out your contact information or paypal email. Talk about the job on the platform, get paid through the system as with any normal job, and pay your friend back offline.

And be careful with activating and deactivating the timer for hourly jobs. Do NOT use the timer on more than one device. (I think this is what got me banned)

Be very careful with this approach. I have a friend who did the same thing and got banned for "Bidding on too many jobs and not getting hired". That was the actual reason Upwork gave him. And was after he hadn't even gone through half of his free monthly job bidding credits yet.

After he insisted on answers via the Upwork support, they changed their reasoning to "there's too many people with your skillset and not enough demand, so we don't need you on our platform at this time." or something like that.

This was even after he had already landed an actual gig on there.

I think Upwork has some kind of algorithm that detects spamming, which happens on an ongoing basis mostly by IRT's that bid on anything that moves, even if they don't have the skills required for that job. Be careful not to falsely get caught by this algorithm, Upwork isn't exactly known to reverse bans.

Edit: I may actually be able to help you out because I have access to a client account. It's not my own account, I just manage it for certain projects sometimes. So the only way it would work is if I'd hire you for something I actually need and can justify. Based on the skillset you added to your post, we might be able to come up with something.

So I can't guarantee anything, but feel free to PM so we can talk details.

Wow CleanSlate, that's really shocking to hear. What business of Upwork is it how many devices you're using? They should be happy you're multi-platforming to get the clients' jobs done...

Winston, thanks for all the advice. I apply only to jobs that I'm qualified for (other than the obvious fact that the employers "prefer high ratings and Rising Stars" whereas I obviously have zero ratings on Upwork so far - if I followed that I wouldn't be able to apply for any job whatsoever so I'd forever remain stuck at 0 ratings, and the actual number / rate of my applications isn't that big but that's still quite scary. I sent you a PM.

p.s. do you think it helps to prevent banning if you get their 10$ / month membership? Surely paying customers are less likely to experience that crap.

the level of IRT's and chinese clones on upwork make the platform impossible. I recently considered it for extra work, I'm actually better just going door to door on businesses in my city. Also upwork has lots of downtime, and the web application features don't work. I don't think it is a website made for white people who expect higher quality honestly.

Internet shit jobs/gigs/ideas?

I'm not sure if I'm posting this in the best place, but I'm looking for ideas for online income. Anything and everything short of Gay for Pay. Seriously, I'm desperate. I'm hardworking and creative, but I need some cash flow so I can get the hell out of this materialistic, feminist, overpriced hell hole (New England, USA) and live abroad.

Any advice is welcomed, thanks in advance!
