Good mid-range watch (under $300) with classic appeal?

Good mid-range watch (under 0) with classic appeal?

I want to try out watch ownership by starting off with something modest (nothing that will suggest I might be filthy rich). Any recommendations for a classic watch with a touch of modern styling? I prefer a larger face than smaller.

I don't have much advice besides one caution. From one hairy caveman to another, don't get metal bands like this

No matter how nice the watch, having the hairs on your wrist torn out as they get caught in the links every now and then makes me feel like I'm being stung by bees throughout the day.

Roosh, not sure if you've skimmed through the watch thread already but I think there are really excellent suggestions in the exact price range you're looking for in this post by hydrogonian. The post is about two and a half years old but I don't think things change too quickly in that world. I particularly like the Vostok (a Russian brand) and the Christopher Ward.

I've gotten a lot of compliments on my Movado, which is similar to this one. They range between $250-1000 at Macys.

I'd suggest going for a vintage-style watch. Leather band, simple face.

I'd suggest ebay, but chances are you'll get a duplicate unless you buy from a highly reputable seller. But if you just want an entry level watch you probably don't care about authenticated watches. You also may need to have the watch serviced.

Roosh, you're cracking me up, because I just ordered 2 Stuhrlings off Amazon literally minutes ago.

Ill post the photos in a few minutes.

They have a classic look and are good watches.

Here's the ones I bought.

This one is cool, because of the how the timer is at the 12 o'clock hour instead of at the 3 o'clock hour.

And I'm thinking of ordering this one too.

I lost a Rolex a few months ago on an epic bender and still am pissed as fuck at myself. It's better to save expensive watches for dressy events/dinners etc, and rock watches like the ones above and similar when you're on dates and out for the night. If you lose it, it's not the end of the world, or if you get robbed/it gets stolen.

Also, for dates, so chicks don't automatically start thinking 'provider'.

That square-faced watch is siiiiiick but it's getting absolutely crucified on Amazon in reviews of engineering build and quality.

Yea, but it's $160. If you don't use it as a daily watch, it'll be fine. I rotate watches so I'll probably wear it 2-3x a month.

@Farmageddon

The Stowa watches you posted, while nice, are about 800 euros each. Well over the $300 price tag.

only $95 too.

These are lower end, but they're really not going to crap out on you in all likelyhood.

I recommend a Tissot watch. Some are around $300 on Amazon. Good look, design, and brand.

Yikes, I totally didn't see the 300 dollar limit. I just saw mid-range.

Yeah, one is 570 euros and the other 800 euros. My mistake.

Funny, i had a friend who called me up asking for watch selection advice a few days ago. I directed them to Masculine Style

The simpler the face the more refined the watch looks
The more gaudy the face the more rakish the watch looks
The larger the face the more go-to-hell attitude the watch has
The smaller the face the more dandyish the watch appears
Leather bands are more refined than metal bands which are more refined than canvas bands
Thinner bands are more dainty while extra thick bands are more rugged
Analog is more refined than digital

I bought, sold, and collected high end watches for years. I agree with these rules as a general proposition, although there are certainly exceptions. Not written by a watch guy, though. It is a "dial", not a "face." lol

As someone mentioned, be extremely cautious of metal bands. Too tight. Too loose. Pull hairs. I have only owned one watch with a metal band that I truly liked. I got rid of all the rest. Buy a watch with a leather band and add a deployment clasp. Then you will not wear out the leather band.

Nixon gold watches fade, so you will get a short life out of them.

Hamilton makes some nice watches, not sure if any are in that price range. Emporio Armani make some nice watches also.

I would get a simple square face watch with leather strap.

Another solid option from Skagen (809XLTRB), only $130. Not as versatile as the one I posted above though.

I would also spend a little more than 300 USD and get a Hamilton or a Tissot.

A good place to look a the options is:
