Lets talk: Medellin apartments....

I've been to Medellin 5 times now, and soon it will be 6.

The toughest nut to crack in this town isn't the girls or the language; the toughest is finding a RENTAL. It seems i'm getting stonewalled from other gringos who have lived there for a long time. Either that or the locals give me USD $1,500/mo pricing.

I heard that the most cost effective rentals are in sabaneta and laureles. What do you guys think? I'm looking for a luxury studio or 1 bedroom to rent year around. Something obviously gated, with 24 hr security that is relatively close to nightlife and shopping.

Is there anyone on this board that has any REAL recommendations? SEriously, i've pounded the pavement on my own but it seems like other gringos are mad jealous of what they perceive as the incoming competition.

btw, I am most likely going to avoid poblado not just because of the high costs, but because the chances of picking up girls there aren't as high as "normal" non gringo areas. Yes, i've pulled them from parque lleras, but that doesn't happen every day.

With all of these 'lifestyle artists' on this board, I figure at least one of you will have some contact info...

Do you have a cedula? Do you have someone to cosign? If not then you're going to pay out the ass or have to rent a room with other people. The gringos who have an apartment are usually married and get help from the wife's family.

No cedula. Cosigner comes with esposa....I'm not willing to do that yet. that said, what if I pay cash won't I automatically get a cedula? Maybe I will stick with renting.

For what it is worth....many of the Gringo's stonewall other gringos for various reasons. I know a few guys that live there /retired there and are really tired of all the mongers from US and Europe that come there and flood the bars and clubs looking for quick lays and pro's (Bootylvr - not saying this is you)

Of course now they are to the point where they feel like any gringo they do not know is a monger, which is not a cool way to view tourists, but it is what it is.

No, i'm not a "mongering" type. I hate that word, and i'm also not a big fan of hanging out with guys that do this either. It's just a shallow pursuit. I'd rather make friends and learn the language and culture then focus 100% of my time on casas...

The stonewalling is very real. especially from the 50+ gringos

Yeah I hear you dude, but sadly there are enough old nasty mongers from Europe and USA down there to give us all a bad image.

If you pay cash up front you'll be able to negotiate a deal... No need for cedula no need to get married. Some owners/agencies won't budge, but you'll eventually find someone who will. Start with three months, you might have to go as high as six. They'll probably also want an insurance deposit and probably will ask you for some random U.S paperwork... Just keep negotiating and be persistent.

Sabaneta is nice... a little out there in the south of city, Laureles is right smack in the Middle of the city, maybe a bit more dangerous... Check out the aguacatala area by the aguacatala stop on the train... The best way to find out is to check out some apartments in both sections of town.. Get a place close to a supermarket, not too dark at nights, maybe close to the train station...

Hi,
it's not a surprise that people who already knew Medellin come back here, this city has got everything and it's a neverending party.
I'm Italian and I live here. Finding a rental is not a problem, Medellin has got a lot of places to stay depending on your needs and budget: the most look for a cheap accomodation, almost always unsafe.

If anybody comes to Medellin and needs a place to stay, Paisasky is a good alternative to the hotels, it's a penthouse with beautiful rooms with private bathroom and terrace, strongbox and great views on the city from a 20th floor. For 50USD dayly with breakfast. An Italian girl rent them ([email protected]). It's in the hear of the town, in the av. Oriental, close to everything, metro station, shopping area, museum, stores, discos, restaurants, 10 minutes to parque Lleras and Poblado.
24 hours security and CCTV surveillance.

The penthouse has six laundry bedrooms, five bathrooms, two terraces, a big shared kitchen, two living rooms, ideal for living a lavish life style in Medellin and perfect for an easy access to the best parts of the city. You can go walking everywhere.
Amenities included:
Fully furnished, electricity, gas, cable tv (100+ channels), local phone service (and availability of call cards), wireless internet, maid service, microwave, full sized fridge, coffee maker, washing machine, two parking garages, elevator, 24 hours security and CCTV surveillance.

Have all of you a nice trip to Medellin!

PM me the exact address. I'll have a local buddy of mine go check them out, and take pictures of them and report what he finds.

bardassa -

Got any options for someone who doesn't need "six laundry bedrooms, five bathrooms"?

Maybe a two bedroom one bath?

Not all of us need to go "mansion style".

50 USD is a pretty good deal imo so long as the unit is clean and in working order

Dash Global:
Absolutely clean and cool with all the comforts. It's not a place for backpackers, there are already a lot of them in Medellín. Most people who stays in Paisasky have another concept of accommodation, pointing to the safety the privacy and the comfort. Like an hotel without being an hotel, with all the services and the amenities to make comfortable and unforgettable your stay in Medellín. All the rooms have an unbelievebly huge view on the city from the room, from the terrace and from the bathroom: it's like being in the clouds, and it worth with this pink sky. This is Paisasky.
And 50 US$ with real breakfast is just dayly price, but there are large discounts for longer stays. In fact, there were no guest who stayed here for less than a month. It's a pretty good deal to live like a king your Colombian time.
When you pay 20 USD you think you found something cheap but you forget you have to go out 3 times to eat, to buy the necessary for the bath, here you have all you may need, just have to buy your food (or somebody will do it for you). Still, space is true luxury: a lot of places here are so small and narrow as to be claustrophobic. Piasasky is generous, spacious, flooded with natural light: everything is big here. That's the way we love it. Elegant, big and gorgeous.

This is really not a great location, I was taking a cab to Parque Berrio late in the evening and the cab driver told me muy peligrosso para extraneros - basically a dangerous spot for tourists.

There isn't anywhere around there that you'd want to go out at night unless you're after some dodgy strip joint. 10 minutes to Parque Llearas is pushing it and that's in a cab not on foot.

Paisasky is not Parque Berrio, and parque Berrio never was a nightlife zone. For sure, that one is a zone where it's clear that something bad can happen to you, while it seems that tourists prefer bad things happen to them in a cool zone like Parque Lleras, Poblado neighborhood, where well dressed girls know how to cheat, steal and dope with style. Same El Poblado where last week there were clash and murdered between gunmen. Same parque LLeras where on May 17, 2001 a car bomb exploded at 10 pm, when more influence, becaming a nightmare because of the terrorist car bomb that killed 8 people and injured over 138. Anything can happen everywhere. Like in Poblado there is a pink zone, in downtown there is a fucsia zone, for people who wants to have fun without needing popularity baths.
Best nightlife is in zona rosa with nice jazz clubs, restaurants and nightclubs (Faise 2, Club San Diego, Blue Room, Executive Club...). Favorite places are El Poblado, La 33, La 70, the tourist circuit through Las Palmas, and the nearby cities of Itagui, Envigado, and Sabaneta: not everything can be located out of your door, take a taxi, it's very cheap in Colombia. Paisasky provides you a personal driver who takes you from and to your home.

Those clubs you mentioned are strictly hooker (prepago) spots where money is directly exchanged for sex. Good info on everything else.

From the map this is by the metro Parque Berrio unless I'm mistaken.

This is definitely not a luxury part of town to live and if you're going to spend $50 a night you can live in a much better part of town without having to share with other people.
