Always surprised he was a heroin addict. He seemed like a normal square guy who had his shit together.
He was great in 'Magnolia'.
Very sad.

Jesus, he was 48.
He looks older than my 68-year old dad.

This is sad, but I can understand why he was a heroin addicted. I "love" hydrocodone, and once went through a light withdrawal when a larger prescription ran out. I can't imagine how sweet the precious would be when it's going directly into your bloodstream.
Lou Reed wrote a great song about it, hell lots of artists wrote about it. In his song he said, "..and I feel just like Jesus' son". That kind of feeling is very hard to let go of.

I don't know....
He was a great actor, without doubt. But I always could tell his health wasn't in good shape. That puffy face, unkempt appearance, dissolute persona, and smirking demeanor masked inner turmoil.
I just got John Belushi/Chris Farley vibes from this dude.

For some reason, after hearing the news I keep thinking he would have been perfect to star in a hypothetical remake of "Citizen Kane." Maybe because of his range.

Great actor. You guys should check out 25th Hour if you haven't already. He's not the main character, but does well in a supporting role of an underrated film.

He was so good it was scary. I couldn't help wondering if doing Synedoche, one of the best but also depressing movies I ever saw, helped do him in.
Add THE TALENTED MR RIPLEY to one of the films he killed it in.
But he certainly reached immortality, something very very few ever do. Physical death can't be avoided.

I know it's a bit silly, but his character in SYNEDOCHE dies attempting a prolonged and agonizing project that becomes impossible to finish.

I feel bad for the guy, but only up to a point.
Living as a junkie is a disgusting way to live. And dying with a needle in your arm is a disgusting way to die.
It may sound heartless but it's true. There is some excuse for getting into that garbage in the first place when you're a young dumb kid. There is no excuse for letting it go on when you're a grown man. None.
The smell of death surrounds you.

Don't want to get into a long argument, but I don't buy that. "Addictive personality", although it exists, is not determinative. A man always has a choice. And someone who keeps taking a drug like heroin is making a stupid and cowardly choice. Especially if he is no longer a very young man.

Sometimes they are. There are also plenty of people who are tormented that aren't great artists, you just don't hear about them as much for that very reason. Either way, no excuse.
