Terrible Year -- 2nd Worst of my Life

Wow, some people have gone through a lot of sh!t so I'm going to stop complaining about my situation. For what it's worth I can relate on the sports injury front: I just completely tore my achilles playing flag football just before thanksgiving and will spend the next 5-6 months rehabbing to walk properly again. During the injury I ended up getting a blood clot that went into my lung and I could have possibly had a stroke or died. The doctors had to install a filter in my vein that they accessed by cutting my jugular open. I had to fill out a healthcare proxy form which basically allows someone else to make medical decisions in case I turned into a vegetable. That was the shittiest form I've ever filled out. Just when I thought I was done with the hospital, I have to get the filter taken out again.

Now, I'm on blood thinners for 6 months and can't even have a beer to watch football on Sundays (might not be a bad thing). I live in Manhattan and getting around on crutches in the snow, ice, etc. effin blows. I can't tell you how many people here have stolen my cab, even after I clearly flagged down the driver. I've also dropped about 10K on medical bills and because I'm immobile, I'm stuck in my 500 square foot studio watching hours and hours of Man vs. Food. I'm a very active person (train Muuy-Thai and play football 5-6x week) and for me to just sit around in my apt. is drivng me insane.

BUT, there are some upsides of the situation:
1. My body probably needed the rest as manhattan lifestyle can really drain you. People here work hard and play hard 5-6 times a week. I was working 60 hour weeks, training 2 hours of muuy thai a night, and then heading out for a night of drinking. I was sleeping say, 4-5 hours a night on average and the bags under my eyes looked horrendous. I'm 34 so that lifestyle would have been ok 10 years ago. Now I save all that going out money (pays for my med. bills), eat healthier, and am getting solid rest.

2. I have so much more time now to focus on other things I've always wanted to do. I just got a Spanish tutor who comes to my apartment 2x a week and I practice my broken @ss Spanish and will eventually get better. I've been reading some books that have been sitting on my bookshelf forever.

3. I've really been able to separate who my real friends are as they always ask to comeby, keep me company, bring me food, help with chores, etc.

4. I'm going to re-read Bang and be on this site more often. I live in a building with a lot of young hot chicks and maybe gaming girls in my building isn't ideal, but I might as well practice improving my game since I'm a gimp and can't leave the apartment just yet. Maybe I'll get sympathy from the big @ss boot I have on my leg for the next 3 months. Plus, I'll have to live vicariously through all of you for a bit.

5. Not that I needed another sports injury, but timingwise, it kind of works well. NYC winters are brutal and I'd rather deal with being stuck inside and going to rehab now to be ready for the spring/summer.

6. I've got a couple of trips planned (Middle East and Greece) and now have more time to research and plan. Plus, it gives me something to look forward to as I'll hopefully be 100% healed by then and have my life back.

7. My job effin blows so I now have the time to work on my resume and start applying to whatever jobs are out there even in this rough economic environment.

So, I don't know the details of how bad things are for you, but hang in there man and try to focus on the positives. There's got be at least a couple of things that are upsides and things eventually will get better. I"m f#cked for the next 6 months, but I try to keep busy and chug along in hopes that come April/May, I'll be good to go again.

2010 sucked for me , I had so many plans but all of them failed [Image: sad.gif] . Lost my job in late 09 because I was heading off to Asia , truck broke down . Had to cancel my trip to buy a new car . Tranny blew 2 weeks ago, $2600 fix. Life sucks right now. Have to work the next year or 2 , and save some $$$$ .
