Investing in Yourself

Subutai was kind enough to introduce me to

http://www.lynda.com

Which is a site that provides all sorts of self-education for practical software applications. I have been considering becoming better versed in the business applications and some light programming.

What sorts of things have you guys taught yourself that you think has made an immense improvement in your skills? I am not including actual career experience or academics, but things that a guy could pick up off the web or every day life.

Examples: language, programming, finance/accounting

The only thing I can think of for myself is French and Chinese, which I picked up with minimal education. Even then, it is kind of cheating according to the rules I set above.

That is open course materials from MIT, which if you do not know is an elite management/engineering school in Massachusetts. There is free course material there if any of you are interested in learning what is available. I like the Sloan School of Management content the best.

Thanks for this. This is an incredible resource. I've been looking through it, and will further do so later. Check out the language section for anyone that wants to learn french, Spanish, German, Chinese, or Japanese. At minimum there are two levels included for each, and for Chinese and Japanese I think upwards of 5 levels are included. There's a lot to discover here.
