I'm Lithuanian and can chime in as well. Unless one takes Russian in secondary school specifically as a "foreign language" (in addition to English) they will be far from fluent. None of my younger cousins (who are all in their early 20s) know it except for basic conversational. Also, outside of big cities (with a few exceptions like Druskininkai) you will not hear anyone speaking Russian.

Kaunas is too small so I recommend you go to the capital, Vilnius but if you can't then Laisves Aleja is definitely the main street where all the nightlife is.

Yes, from Kaunas originally and then lived in Vilnius for a few years. Now I work in USA but still visit family every couple of years. If you read Rooshs' Bang Lithuania book you'll know how the nightlife in Kaunas is (although his sample was somewhat skewed and i am not sure he got around enough) but if you wanna have more fun and success than try to visit the resort town Palanga in the summer months, Kaunas can be very boring and in my opinion is a dying city (Slowly loosing its #2 status to Klaipeda)

I was in Palanga last year for a week and there's really not much to do during the week, even in the high season months. Most Lithuanians just go there for the weekends. For the week, it's really just a nice little seaside town. Foreigner status is still quite good there, saw barely any of them while I was there.

Kaunas itself is full of Maroza type of people (wanna be thugs). My Lithuanian friends still warn me about walking around at night alone. And last year I ran into a couple of UK guys (indians tho) who didn't take a taxi from A to B and ended up beaten up. Not saying you'll get mugged in broad daylight, but I'd just take a cab to go from places to places just to be sure. English level is definitely down compared to VNO. I like Klaipeda a lot more, the city itself is also a lot better looking.

The country used to be at 3.8 million but due to emigration (i'm one of the guilty one's at that) over the last 2 decades it is barely above 3 million. Still I believe visiting Klaipeda during the summer and then hitting the nearby beach towns of Palanga and Nida for the weekend nightlife is ideal.

Kaunas is OK compared to many other places in the world. My Lithuanian friends who were brought up in Kaunas and now live in VNO don't recommend that you walk the main street (the promenade) at night alone. A lot of times you might get jumped by drunken kids. Just take a taxi.

No fearmongering. I explicitly said that it's nowhere as dangerous as other parts of the world many of the members go to.

But I did meet 2 UK indian dudes at mojo one day, saw them with a beaten up face couple days after. Said they were walking from barbara to mojo. I've been fine in Kaunas, but it has to be said that its nowhere near as safe as Vilnius. And you have to admit that even among Lithuanians, Kaunas and its people have a really bad rep.

I was in Kaunas a couple of years ago vising a friend and what I got from there is that as long as u keep a low profile on the streets at night u should be ok. Like, if u are with some friend, try not to speak in other languages that are not local or at least not so loud so u won't stand out.

BTW, I can vouch for the latino love there.

No, previous post is an exaggeration. Just use common sense. I assume you are Danish so you can easily pass for a local and if you don't look drunk and act loud Kaunas is perfectly safe especially in the "Laisves Aleja" area (main walking street in downton Kaunas).

I've never been to Gdansk but if you're coming from Moscow or any other large Russian city then Kaunas will seem like a village to you and be really boring. I would wait till later in the spring when the weather warms up substantially to hit up Kaliningrad and then just drive 30 minutes north and hit up the Baltic Sea resort of Palanga. You will not believe the amount of talent that exists there.

I haven't been to Vilnius in a couple years so might not be the best person to ask in this forum but in a nutshell if you want more, hotter women with less of a language barrier then go to the capital however it also in my opinion has been ruined a lot by stag parties. Local women are a bit suspicious of foreign "tourists" there nowadays. Kaunas becomes dead during the summer as school is out and a lot of the young professional women either travel abroad to EU countries, work overseas, or hit the beach towns like Palanga and Nida so might be a bit boring to be honest.
