Well..the Latvian wife is gonna have to pay off now...

As a few of you guys know from my first thread, "I married a Latvian." Well, just yesterday I became unemployed for the first time ever. We have no kids, zero debt, even without my paycheck, we still have plenty...my wife is a VP...yep..I got lucky in my Latvian....Soooo...long story short...I tell her that I am going to travel Europe for like 4 weeks, or go spend 2 months in Medellin and Buenos Aires to learn Spanish.....How many American Wives would look at you and laugh or tell you to F Off? My Latvian wife...says ok...but you had better not come back and not want to be married anymore....You can take the Latvian out of Latvia but you can't take the Latvian out of the Woman.....BTW, she is 9 years younger than me, 5'9" about 125-130 pounds....I almost giggle a bit when she says the stuff about me leaving her....but that's an E European wife for you.

Based on the paragraph above, knowing I am married, happily, and my budget is $10K...
-Europe for a month OR
-Goto S America, thinking Buenos Aires or Medellin and learning Spanish for 2 months.

Thanks guys....and remember NEVER EVER, DON'T EVEN THINK ABOUT ever marrying an American girl..

I don't understand.
You're happily (!) married and just have decided to go to SA/ Europe for a month to bang chicks, and still have that boldness to call out girls that wouldn't accept that.
That's not what marriage is about.

NOOOOOO....I said that I was happily married at the end of the post, to say I am not out to bang chicks in a more nuanced manner....I am looking for a travel experience of a lifetime for a month or two...that I never thought I would have a chance to do...I never thought I would be unemployed..but life was good to me and gave me this time..

Thoughts and what you would do travelwise from the two choices I was down to?

And the 10K doesn't involve flights...I have 300K in miles with American for the flights.

Oh I'm sorry, I just understood you wrong!
Well to be honest, in Europe it will be pretty cold until March/April, so you'd be freezing your ass off most of the time you're outside.
Also expect lack of sun, lot of grey sky and rain. (Unless you'll be in Barcelona or Sicily)

But I don't know how important weather is to you, and what kind of cultural experience you prefer.

Yes, the only goal in the loss column was the time of year would be winter in Europe, but I figured I had to leave Europe in there because you guys get to travel places for months and I read all the stuff, but for a 40 year old guy and a 31 year old wife, no kids, no debt...etc...figured I would work to the day I retired and at most take a 2 week vacation. This is a blessing I never thought I would get and I just want to make the most out of it.

What "marriage is about" depends on the two people involved. Don't push your definition of what a marriage should be onto others.

Maybe you are on the wrong site?

It depends on the woman. My ex wife was from EE and she thought she would be traveling alone with her girlfriends and I would take her when I went traveling.

She wasn't happy when I told her no, I would travel alone and she can do whatever the fuck she wants.

Well, my mother would have never let my father do this and most of my friends say that they wouldn't even ask their wives and they think I am nuts for actually doing it though. The difference I think is that she will let it go when it's done, when I tell her I am pretty much going, yeah, she isn't happy, but on this I wouldn't budge, said it was done and then she let it go. An American girl would never let it go...

But that is a tangent.....any travel advice for me on this. I am really going to listen to you guys on this. I will even report back periodically.

This is the perfect time to go to South America. You're coming into the dry season in Colombia and it's summer in Argentina and Brazil.

Your going to leave your "hot" wife for 2 months to go learn spanish.

Not sure if you are very brave or stupid, I don't care where she is from.

Women is women, while the cats away the mice will play.

This is the truth. maybe she's not worried he's leaving because she already has her own plans.

I had to fight to get this time.

If you love something set it free, if it leaves and then comes back it tried to do better but decided to just settle for you.

Any opinions i was thinking Buenos Aires and Medellin or spain italy greece and Paris

If your goal is to learn Spanish and stay warm, then the Canary Islands are the best option for Europe. They are politically part of Spain but geographically part of Africa. As a result, they have the highest rated year-round weather in the world. Better than Southern California -- and that really says something. The two largest islands are famous for their varying micro-climates, ranging from ocean shore to desert to tropical and much in between. There is a thread on the Canary Islands. I have no idea what options you might have for learning Spanish there.

From what I understand, the cheapest place to learn Spanish is in Guatamala, where even one-on-one instruction is quite cheap. I am considering that myself. The high inflation in Argentina is offering some real value (for almost everything) if you pay in dollars or Euros. Buenos Aires is considered the Paris of South America and is quite cultured.

Not that I've been, but I would go with Sth America. Couple weeks in Peru, maybe check out Ecuador, and then the rest in Colombia.

why don't you ask her to meet you for part of the trip somewhere? Since you have no kids just wondering what the hell she's going to be doing while you are gone. She has some vacation time coming right?

I have done a lot of traveling alone abroad and it gets boring fast if you don't settle down somehwere for awhile. I guess if you are gaming night in and night out in Kiev or Manilla, or haning out learning Spanish in Barcelona or wherever it might be ok, but sounds like you're on a 'life experience' sorta ride and want to see things, not just b@ng girls. Going out in xyz town on random Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday nights week in and week out in some unknonw place can get pretty old just like staying in at home can.

So if you're going somewhere for up to 2 months I'd consider having her come visit in the middle - might be a nice change back to something familiar for you too. Never been married and you've been in this realtionship for quite awhile but so assume the bonds are very strong between the two of you, but EVERY expat I know who's lived in Moscow and left the wife and kids back home for extended periods of time has gotten divorced. That's over a longer period of time of course though. And its ususally bc they drifted apart and inevitably the guy found some younger, much hotter and more feminine women here that just blew his wife out of the water....with you it's a little different story.

Just my 2 cents. Again I've never been married. And on the one hand I want to compliment your wife on her flexibilty, but on the other maybe there's something going on/and or she might be somewhat confused/angy at you about your intentions and why you're doing this (but not openly showing that to you) which could become an issue.

She will visit once a month wherever i am. I was almost leaning towards a month in Europe bc i don't know how much Spanish i would retain after 2 months from Medellin or Buenos Aires and a month in the EU seems much more exciting/less boredom than two months in two cities where i know no one.

I would not even bother listening to the guys saying that you are crazy to leave your woman for two months.

A man cant live a life with fear of hypergamy. And she will not just wake up after two weeks and decide to go out and fuck some guy. No, if that was the case, she would have already made up her mind to do that while you were still at home.

I would choose central Mexico for learning Spanish. Ecuador also has a great accent. Learning in a place with good pronunciation makes getting the basics down easier.

Not sure if this is true or not, but I found the hotter the climate, the more consonants that were left out of words when spoken.

Besides learning Spanish(how much would I retain?), the other option is a one month trip anywhere, since this is my only shot.....I don't know if 2 months of learning Spanish would be worth more than 4 weeks anywhere else. Opinion?

Spanish speaking countries are generally great places. Its a win-win.

Learn some language (you will pick up a decent amount in 2 months if you work at it) and see some landscapes and history. Or chase skirt.
