The reason why broads idolize celebrities is that they are programmed to seek out males with the highest social value, which celebrities today have in stratospheric amounts. Also girls are sheep. Ryan gosling said it himself, if Hollywood wants you to be a sex symbol people just accept it as fact.

Social narcissism.

Women have always been obsessed with the powerful - celebrities are America's nobility.

Men want to be the men they idolize, women want to fuck them.

Serious though, 2Wycked hit the spot. The same way pre-1900s people viewed nobility people view celebrities today. They live their lives through these celebrities. 24/7 cable news and tabloids in addition to social media just furthers it.

I'm not sure about the nobility / celebrity comparison. Would have to look into it, but I don't think most people aspired to be nobility back in the day. In fact, it wasn't something anyone could aspire to. You either were or you weren't. Celebrity worship is something qualitatively different, though I'm not sure how.

The sports stars represent something the guys will never be. It gives them meaning beyond regular life, to be part of the 'winners'. That's why if you observe obsessive sports fan, they follow the emotional roller coaster of their respective teams. The team is doing well they are happy, team is losing, they feel like shit. It's interesting to watch.

Also if you think about it many sports can be compared to war. The teams try to gain territory and strive to achieve a certain goal. In the West there is no war, just comfort, and part of being a man is to struggle. Guys need an outlet, and if they aren't into game or improving themselves they'll find it watching sports.

Participating in a sport is also difficult and a lot of guys are lazy. What's easier watching a football game and pounding 12 beers on a Sunday or actually learning and playing football?

I have nothing against watching sports, but when guys become obsessed watching them it's a problem. It's also hilarious to me when I see clearly out of shape men discuss how they could do better in the cage or the field.

Women are just herd creatures. All it takes is one of them to think some celebrity is hot and the rest will follow.

People lead mundane boring lives. I've never seen anyone with an interesting life giving a fuck about celebrity gossip.

@AntiTrace

You nailed it bro. It's not just the Americans, Asians (especially Taiwanese and Hongkies) do too. Lots of the Asian celebs are like kim kardashian too. No talent and famous for being famous. Granted. Asians are pretty dull people living the drone lifE.

Great points made, so I don't really have anything to add. I will say lots of those guys just drinking beer and watching sports probably did play when they were younger but simply didn't have the genetics to make it to the pros. For those who have not seen a pro football or basketball player in real life, they are like ultimate physical alpha males. The fact men can be that big and strong and fast and agile is beyond mind numbing.

I will say though, part of it IMO is the break down of the family unit. Just two generations ago, the top celebrities all quit their easy gigs making movies or playing ball and they joined the military to help in the war.

Hard to believe guys like Bob Feller, Yogi Berra, Ted Williams, Jimmy Stewart, and on and on, all quit top notch celeb gigs to go sign up and put their lives on the line fighting for our freedom. Sad how much times have changed.

Indonesia is the same way. It's been argued that celebrity worship is a kind of polytheism that compensates for a drop in religiosity among the general public.

It's because we don't have royalty. When people don't have rulers, they invent them. Especially women.

There is a game lesson in that.

Why do teenage girls become truly 'creepy' and beyond obsessed with male pop stars (specifically ones who are teens themselves), yet it just doesn't happen AT ALL with teenage boys and female pop stars?

Some of us who played sports can truly appreciate how good these guys are. Yours truly THOUGHT that he could be a "walk on" and play for a major college football team (after only playing a year in high school). After watching another walk-on hopeful run two back-to-back sprints of 10.3 in the 100 meters (who was also bigger than me), I grabbed my bookbag and headed for my Calculus course.

In ancestral societies, the blueprint for a good role model was relatively well-defined - a good hunter, or gatherer, or parent, maybe a ritual expert.

But in our society, with its complex class system, division of labour and melting pot of cultures, the criteria for success are far more varied and opaque. Many celebrities have accomplished their success in fields like sport and music, which most of us have little hope of emulating.

But we still imitate what we can because our brains are programmed to associate prestige with adaptive behaviour. And because fame is the primary cue of prestige, the more attention celebrities get, the more they attract.

It's not surprising then, that fame has become an end in itself. Because in the modern world, it does not really matter what you are famous for.

Hahahahahaha!! I went to Iowa State with a friend from my football team. He was being recruited as a Defensive End at 6ft 3in and 195 pounds. I was a Defensive Back at 5ft 10in and 145. We saw running backs that were 220 pounds. He went to junior college for basketball, and I went into the Army. I feel you bruh.

As much as I love American football, it really is a shame how many of our great athletes play this sport and the rest of the world doesn't get to see or appreciate them. If we didn't have American football and instead these great athletes grew up playing other sports (such as soccer, weight lifting, gymnastics) I shudder to think how many Gold medals and world cups we would win.

I know three guys well who played on the line in a big time D1 program. All played preseason in the NFL but none of them made the cut. They got close.

One is 6'8" 300 lbs. and runs a 5.0 40. To put it bluntly, we played flag football and he was the best out there playing QB and WR against a bunch of average joe's. He was faster than the rest of us.

One is 6'5" 330 lbs. and could rep 700 lbs. in the squat and dunk a basketball with ease.

The other is 6'5" 265 lbs. and broke a back board dunking the ball so hard.

Just unreal, basically get out of their road if you are playing against them or get hurt.
