Help me plan an epic west coast road trip

Road trips can be the funnest experiences, especially when you're young.

So true. I wish I went on more of these when I was younger. My first major trip was KC-Denver, then KC-San Diego-Santa Barbara. Back in FSU every woman was hooked on the Santa Barbara soap opera and we went there just so we could hum the theme song that has been engraved in our minds since childhood.

These days all my friends are either married or stuck with tiny vacations. I'm actually looking for an industry job, just so I can relate to people. Having all this free time is miserable, if you've got nobody to share it with.

I'm not sure if it's been mentioned before but I was thinking that if I ever did a road trip, I would advertise on craigslist in the "rideshare" section. I used to do that when I would travel to LA because I drove a classic car that got milage by the foot.

I actually met one of my best friends ever like that. Which led to solid hookups in Ecuador and Colombia.

You charge someone between 20-50 bucks to drive them to the next destination city.

This sort of thing can really cut your gas costs down and provide you with zany stories.

Since you appear to be in college, I'm assuming you're under 25 and therefore can only rent a car by paying an extra fee if they allow you to rent at all, which is why I suggest taking the train up from SD to SF (plus SF blows with a car if you're staying in the city).

I'll be 29 next month. Teaching, but same break schedule as the students.

Ah, yeah, then go ahead and rent a car then the central california coast is awesome.

San Diego-Newport Beach-Santa Monica-Santa Barbara-Solvang (cool day trip esp Christmas time)-SLO-Monterrey-Santa Cruz-San francisco then take I5 back to San Diego (or drop off car in SFO).

A cool thing to do might be to check out each of the California Missions along that path. Most of them are in the "San" Beach Cities along the coast.

Logistically, I'd dump the car back at SFO as soon as you come into SF (where you'll fly out of) and take BART into the city so you save $30 a day in parking.

I do this quite a bit when rolling to the airport. Many of which that work there.
