The Dominican Republic stripping citizenship of Hatian Dominicans

http://news.yahoo.com/dominican-ruling-s...50950.html

Now isnt this interesting..... I would really like to hear peoples thoughts on this, Especially those who have lived or have some connection to the island Hispanola.

Has anyone ever heard of a country revoking citizenship based off of ethnicity? I could be underead on world history but i thought this was alittle wierd.

SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic (AP) — The Dominican Republic's top court on Thursday stripped citizenship from thousands of people born to migrants who came illegally, a category that overwhelmingly includes Haitians brought in to work on farms.

The decision cannot be appealed, and it affects all those born since 1929.

The Constitutional Court's ruling says officials are studying birth certificates of more than 16,000 people and notes that electoral authorities have refused to issue identity documents to 40,000 people of Haitian descent.

The decision, which gives the electoral commission a year to produce a list of those to be excluded, is a blow to activists who have tried to block what they call "denationalization" of many residents.

"This is outrageous," said Ana Maria Belique, spokeswoman for a nonprofit group that has fought for the rights of migrants' children. "It's an injustice based on prejudice and xenophobia."

Until 2010, the Dominican Republic followed the principle of automatically bestowing citizenship to anyone born on its soil. But the court ruled that all Haitian migrants who came to work in Dominican sugarcane fields after 1929 were in transit, and thus their children were not automatically entitled to citizenship just because they were born here.

The Dominican Republic and Haiti have a long-standing feud running since 1822 when Haiti invaded and occupied the newly independent Dominican Republic for 22 years. Some Dominicans say that Haiti has also been conspiring to "Haitianize" the Dominican Republic ever since their independence, occasionally resulting in reactionary disasters like the Parsley Massacre and mass-deportations.

Well for a moment, Imagine the propaganda that was put out by hitler to gain support to commit the atrocities that he did.(if you never heard off the propaganda campaign google it) I see the same stuff in DR, when you get in conversations with Dominicans. Like when I take public taxis. As long as I dont speak english they dont know im not Dominican and my god the non-sense that comes out of there mouth is appauling. Things like,
The Haitians are planning another invasion this year, which was last year BTW(never happend).
Which I asked them do they think the hatians plan on throwing coconuts and unripe platinos as weapons because THEY ARE BROKE! They cant afford food let alone ammo and arms.

Or they say, I cant believe Hatians let the children beg on street corners.(when I see Dominicans sending there kids to do the same in masses.

OR the earthquake was god getting rid of brujeria in haiti.
O because there isnt any in the Dominican Republic.(especially since that a dominican word)

Its drives me nuts, But this is because we come from a more sophisticated society in the USA. So the average american can think independently to atleast a menial degree. Thats why we are so progressive socially and economically.

I sent this article to a few dominican friends. Some of them were offended and started talking about the US doesnt have any right to talk(Stuff like how we treat blacks and Mexicans).

Which i said to them, thank you for bringing that up because you just made it easy to paint a point. The US, though we have done fucked up stuff to minorities, never in modern times considered deporting US born African Americans because slavery is over or taking there citizenship. OR mexican americans kids born here because there parents are illegal. An American is an American regardless of ethnicity if you were born here or were naturalized.
MAybe I could have just chugged way to much of the coolaid, but it just makes me so happy to be an American Citizen.

The Haitian move to invade DR or was to Decolonize the island. The Hatians had just received independence of the french and were basically giving independence to the rest of the island. However, Dominicans later rejected it and said they wanted to be under the spanish rule. After All its a saying that you don't have to colonize physically if you can do it mentally. This along with the famous Trujio established a culture of trying to WHITEN the race. This is dominican culture historically.

Now, there are two sides to this. This ruling is the mentality of the Older generations who are dying off, they parallel the age of the Tea Partiers in America. The current generation is increasingly more open, sophisticated, and educated. I have been impressed by some discussions i have had about with Dominicans about there roots and history.

Yeah, I think that Trujillo dude is the reason why they like white dudes soo much. It's almost impossible not to score down there for us..

Ali&Fisto will tell you in the hotel we were at there was a lifestyle magazine for upscale Dominican living on the counter and the dude err I mean model on the cover looked just like me (white kinda Italian?)

I thought about it and did an experiment...

I ditched my gringo buddys and put on some pants and black button down shirt and walked into the casino. It was like parting the red sea everyone just moved out of my way as I kept my mouth shut.

Awesome.

Yeah,
thats pretty thats funny man. I would have loved to witness that.

Funny enough i have alot of experiences like that, for obviously different reasons. When I blazer up, they just swear, ima baseball player "tu ere pilotero verdad ". It was funny my brother and I hit Ave Venezuela, on a packed night. And people starred in masses. It was right before New Years and it was packed and right on a payday. I havent seen it like that since. But We both had world series yankees hat, were suited up and they kept asking if we were players. I said no, which they didnt believe, and then they tried to isolate my brother and tell him he can tell the truth they wont bother us to much. Those moments a priceless. Until some of us get actual fame and then it gets annoying. lol

But it's more than just Trujilo, because there had to be an underlying mentality prior to him. Also, you have to think, the majority of tourist there are white as well, which they are spending doe on the two week vacation from Corporate America. Not to mention the majority of the upperclass are lighter in DR as well as Haiti. Example...Most of my Haitian friends in the States and Canada are Mulattos and hence having the money to leave Haiti. But, I never saw a Mulato Hatian there. So its a compounded situation.
