Any Suggestions: What blade to shave with?
09-21-2013, 03:04 PM
After 10+ years using the Gilette Sensor Excel,
Im looking to try out something new
I couldn't keep up with all the new models Gilette and other have come out with over the years, but figure there must be something better out there then what i'm using..
Not looking to go electric or use a straight blade.
Looking for the expected features: smooth shave, not overly $$ to replace blades, etc..
Thanks

Forget that Gilette money trap. Get a safety razor and get a better, much cheaper shave. Youtube it or do a search here for info.

I second the safety razor. I have a merkur 180. Great shave but its a different style of shaving. Like how your grandfather would shave.
Each blade is rough 50 cents or less. As opposed to to 4 bucks. Also any double edge blade will fit it.

here is what I use and get great results: use double bladed disposables. They have a plastic shaft, so if you soak the razor in boiling water for a few minutes, it will not get too hot.
So shave with a boiling hot razor. I get a close clean shave every time. GL

What is a safety razor, I've been hearing this term thrown around a lot lately.

I'm sticking with my Mach 3
Yes it costs more, but because I hate shaving I tend to rush and have had some bad cuts with other blades. Have never had a bad cut with the Mach
Besides, I only shave my neck and that not every day, so I use a cartridge for weeks, so the cost isn't bad at all.

^^^^ Same here. Neck only for me now so I go weeks on one.
Also, Mach3 blades fit the Mach3 Turbo...it's actually the exact same cartridge in different colors. You have to be a complete idiot to pay more for the green "Turbo" cartridges.

1. Go on EBay and look for a double edge safety razor. For a first-timer, you're going to want something fairly adjustable and mild like a late 1940s-early 1950s Gilette SuperSpeed. They're cheap.
2. Go on Amazon and buy a big pack of Feather blades from whatever supplier is cheapest.
3. Buy a badger hair brush and some real soap.
Shave.

You can resharpen any razor by gliding it along your skin backwards or using a thick belt.

I wouldn't recommend Feathers for first timers. Very sharp so I hear and they would have the stroke down yet. The no pressure 1" strokes that are held about 30* from the face. Very good chance of slicing your face up with those.
