Here's the best definition of god:

An ever-receding pocket of scientific ignorance- the god of the gaps.

The Christian religion is a parody on the worship of the sun, in which they put a man called Christ in the place of the sun, and pay him the adoration originally paid to the sun - Thomas Paine

Well,
I'm atheist and I take an independent political position. I don't need to be spoon-fed concepts from birth. I choose to interpret things for myself, and this leads me to a significant amount of self confidence. I don't dress nicely or act politely for other people, I do it for myself. I will do things that conservatives will consider "risky," but I will also abstain myself from certain things that more "liberal" people will generally encourage. I guess everything is based on the individual.

Thomas Paine was an awesome and brave man.

Wrong.

We don't believe in god, and if there was some overlord controlling us, we'd hate that.

Do you want an alpha male telling you what do to? Are you a woman?

Question for the atheists:

What's your impression of what God is like? I know the natural reaction is going to be like "I don't have one because I don't believe in God" but treat the question as I was asking you about what a character from a novel would be like - Sherlock Holmes is a fictional character but the moment someone asks you to think of Sherlock Holmes then you'll probably generate a mental image of some white guy dressed in Victorian fashion holding a magnifying glass. When someone tells you to think of God, what's the mental image you generate? Do you think of a literal Caucasian male with a white beard or of something else?

That's actually a question that you guys should answering. Atheists recognize that there are a lot of different versions of god out there.

What version do you think of when someone mentions God to you?

Most people in America literally believe that god is a white bearded man.

Others think of god as an energy or something that has consciousness.

When I think of god, I think of all the suffering in the world, and dog shit as well.

I don't believe God is a physical dude up past space, Morgan Freeman is not the "big man." I envision a theoretical god to be an energy, the thing that started life. But since I'm atheist, I don't worry about it [Image: tongue.gif]

I think the technical definition for that is "agnostic" not "atheist". The Atheist position calls for the outright denial of even the possibility of God.

Or so I've read, anyway.

Nah, I don't believe in a God.
I'm just saying how I'd imagine God to be if I believed in a higher power.

Of course there are higher powers, you don't need the supernatural for that. But, no thing can force you to do anything you don't want to do. God can't fuck with free will- that's why he's always trying to get people to do shit in the old testament. For that reason, god is not all powerful.

I actually think if god existed, he would very much resemble, in characteristic action, the god of the old testament.. a manipulative and genocidal warlord.

By the old testament definition, we have gods living Earth. The leader of North Korea is a good example.
