And if you aren't French or have any connection in France, are the landlords normally interested to sign a lease without a 'dossier'?

You would need, French or not, things like: a good work contract, a two-month deposit, first month' rent paid up-front, plus possibly recommendations from a former landlord... yes, it's nightmarish...

It's easier to find a place to share, or a short-term furnished renting (try for example a couchsurfing "sub-renting in Paris" group, or Craiglist)

French landlords are much better protected when they rent short-term and furnished... that is your chance and opportunity. Ask for a 2-month rent.

I live in Paris at the moment and I have been back to a few small, studio-style, 1 room apartments with girls. The smallest, and cheapest was 450 euros a month and was tiny - maybe 2.10m x 4m - with a shower, soafabed, tiny kitchen area etc.

Space is at a massive premium in this city - 600-800 euros seems to be average for maybe 20m squared, depending on area - and it is not so easy to get them, as mentioned above.

It is a good city to live in but unless there is something specific bringing you to Paris there are more affordable cities out there.

I don't know why everybody wants to live in Paris.
It's a small city, 2 millions inhabitants, thus everything related to real estate is very expensive. If you compare to London, 10 millions inhabitants, it's like you wanted to live in the heart of London; quiet expensive I think ?

You have many cities surrounding Paris, actually sometimes you even don't know that you are leaving Paris. Just check the subway map and look at those cities that have subway stops.

Avoid North of Paris, quiet dangerous, focus on west, south and east. Rent will drop from 20% to 30% just because you are not actually in Paris. But you are still 10 min by subway from the center.

^^^^

Those surrounding towns don't sound like having a good nightlife and living there wouldn't be conducive to good logistics just to save a few euros on rent.

Hey Zuma, thank you for posting up this Paris data sheet, I'm looking at moving to Paris in 2016 so this information is timely but may I ask you, what do you know the city named Meudon ?
Would it be a good city to move to outside of Paris ?
