The 2Wycked Guide To Horror Flicks

The local video rental place has been shut down for some time now. Plus, I haven't been followed much media.

Any good horror flicks slated to come out or have come out in recent months?

To be clear, I'm not a huge Horror guy. I like them but I'm not big on the gory for the sake of it style stuff that seems to be most of what comes out these days.

The Conjuring is supposedly very good and just recently came out on DVD. I haven't sat down to watch it yet but it's sitting at a 7.6 on IMDB. One of the It got an R rating without gore, nudity, or profanity. It had one of the bigger box offices ever for an original R-rated horror. It's based on a "true story" haunting/possession. Same director as the first Saw.

He also did Insidious which came out in 2010 and the sequel (Insidious 2) that just came out this year. I haven't seen the sequel yet but the first...well, the beginning half or so was really good. I didn't like the rest of it though. I'd say it's worth watching. Another haunting plot with these ghosts following this little boy.

Sinister was a good one that came out in 2012. It stars Ethan Hawke and is pretty freaky. I watched it with a chick who "has seen so many Horrors that they just don't scare her anymore" and she was still freaked out weeks later [Image: lol.gif] It's about this writer who writes books trying to solve unresolved murder cases and he moves into a house where a whole family was killed.

Speaking of Ethan Hawke, The Purge just came out on DVD also I believe. It was advertised as a Horror but it was more of Thriller with a strong social commentary. Not the best movie but it was worth seeing.

I've seen Sinister and wasn't much moved by it. I'd give it 5/10. It massively overuses the "something suddenly leaps onto the screen and screams" type of scene, which is very cheap and tacky and doesn't scare me at all. The idea was interesting, but overall all of the characters acted so dumb and illogical that it killed any enjoyment of the movie for me.

Contrast with a movie like Dead Silence (Guillermo del Toro flick about a man being haunted by a dead witch famous for her ventriloquism and puppets) where there are no things leaping out onto the screen for cheap scares and everyone actually acts in ways that make sense.

Movie is ok, based on a true story. Heres a true story about my experience watching the movie. If you watch the movie apparently theres something that happens at 3am where evil spirits can kill you or scare you. I watch the movie with my girlfriend, shes scared so she stays over at the house. I'm sleeping like a baby when all of a sudden at 3am my computer starts blasting some kind of evil techno music with a guy sounding like Satan talking about the end of the world, its super loud to I have big speakers and a sub. I hide under the covers an make my girlfriend get up and turn the computer off. I had that computer for 4 years and never ever herd that song/sound or had my computer randomly blast anything in the middle of the night.....An it never did it again either.
So the next night I'm shook and scared as a bitch. My girlfriend wasn't staying the night I was alone an scared so I sleep on the couch with the dog and cats. I get woke up in the middle of the night by thunder thats literally shaking the walls. I'm like "no Emily Rose leave me alone!!!" I looked at my phone and it was only shorty after 2am tho.... I was still pretty shook..... for months.
I still watch scary movies and don't really believe in ghost and shit... but really, like what are the odds?

Well, 2Wyked was asking about movies that came out in recent months and that movie is over 5 years old. Also, it's not a Guillermo del Toro film, it was directed by the same guy as The Conjuring, Insidious, and Saw: James Wan.

I'm not saying it was amazing (Sinister) but it just came out last year and was pretty well-received. I thought the plot was fairly disturbing and the ending wasn't what I expected.

I guess I will add some of my favorites to the list:

Hellraiser I and II are good and gory films, but the rest of the
The People Under the Stairs is a 90's favorite of mine.

The Hills Have Eyes I and II (The Remakes) are brutal films, if Hellraiser series is crap for the most part.

Let the Right One In is a fresh new take on the vampire genre.

Session 9 is good psychological horror film with a creepy aura.
you like brutal type films.

The Human Centipede was a really gross film that I actually liked. There is a sequel to this film, but I just don't have the stomach for watching another film like this.

The Human Centipede 2 is worthy of a watch. It's possibly the most disgusting film I've ever seen.

I thought the first one was pretty funny - this one has a very grainy, dark feel.

There are still some comedy moments though - the bad guy is a total freak.

@kbell: Have you seen the Whisperer in Darkness (2011) made by the H. P. Lovecraft Historical society? Judging by the trailers it looks amazing but I haven't been able to get my hands on a copy yet.

Believe it or not, PARANORMAL ACTIVITY: THE CHOSE ONES was pretty good. It's a confused mess, but is scary when it has to be.

I started writing a response to this thread.

But it kept growing. And growing. Until it was out of control. Seriously.

So - I am going to break up my lengthy response into smaller posts - and post them on a separate thread. You will see why when you read it. If you can make it to the end! [Image: undecided.gif]

Horror flicks, in America, have been around since the inception of cinema. The first horror flick in history was made by a French dude - a three minute short called The Haunted Castle.

I really don't know much about portrayals of Dracula, Frankenstein and others in the 1920's and 1930's.

Two very popular horror/thriller movies was Invasion of the Body Snatchers and The Blob, released in 1956 and 1958. There were other popular films, but I have not seen them. Two themes began to emerge - which we see with the TV show "The Twilight Zone" - is fear of nuclear destruction and fear of demons.

Since we've been briefly talking about Stephen King here, if you're interested in a rough overview of the history of horror from about the 30s through to the 80s - in film, novels, and TV - King wrote a nice, readable non-fiction text called Danse Macabre which takes the reader through the decades, surveys how horror's developed, and tries to suggest why horror works.

That movie looks promising Parsifal. I have an HP. Lovecraft movie which was straight to DVD which is a modern silent movie shot in black in white. Its called Call of Cthulu. Its interesting but not really scary. I don't think a movie can be truely scary without a good sound effects and sounds.
