Do you guys take breaks from lifting?
08-01-2013, 02:57 PM
A couple of months ago I got problems with my left shoulder and after consulting with my doctor I took a break from lifting for 2 months.
After that I re-started lifting with more reps (20x) and less weight (approx. 70% of former weight). Additionally I started running twice a week.
Definitely feels good when making progress with cardio and it also helps with weight lifting.
Long story short, I suggest you go for 2-4 runs a week instead of your regular workout.
Once you get back to lifting you'll benefit from this.

Running fixed my shoulder too, i think it loosens up the rotator.....

If you deload properly you shouldn't need to take time off, i.e. completely stop lifting. Every 4-5 weeks you should have a deload period.

I deload by cutting both sets and reps by 50% about once every 6 weeks (keep the same weight though). It works well for me and seems to prolong progress before stalling.

Yeah, I take breaks sometimes, when you get older and after years of working out it's not possible not to, either due to life's responsibilities (work, family, whatever), injuries or simply because occasionally you need a few days off to rest mentally and/or physically.
Like now for example, I developed tendonitis on my left elbow and it sucks. I had to take a month off from upper body lifting and now I rearranged my workouts to work around the injury.
