I've been using this one on the elevator
"They should really play music in here. I can't stand these uncomfortable silences"
This usually gets them yapping

Tried this by accident but i think it's got some future potential. First 5 words are key, eye contact a quick hello and....
"Do we know each other?" "You have a very familiar face."
Can be used pretty much anywhere and cuts to the chase so you don't waste your time.

I'm relatively new to the area, so I use the lost approach. My friends and I are usually looking for good party spots so we just ask what's to do or where the parties are located. I get to find out what she is and isn't interested in and if she turns out to be a dud, I still know where the good bars, parties, and clubs are as opposed to wasting a $20 cover on a sausage fest.

Ask a question. Women naturally want to help you out, so ask directions, ask them if they know where a bookstore is, or a coffeeshop. If I use a line, I say "Your eyes are as blue as the water in my toilet" or if I am in a bar I ask "Can i by you a drink, or do you just want the money", or "That's a nice dress, it would look great on my bedroom floor.

This reminds me one of that really bombed years ago when I was trying to get something resembling a game together.
Scenario: Late at the 24-hour grocery store. Cute girl looking at dog food and treats. I walk up and introduce myself.
Me: "Looking for a late night snack?" <coy smirk>
Her: <Complete look of horror>
I didn't factor in that it could sound like the complete opposite of what I intended. That's why later I decided it's best to whisper to myself what I'm going to say before I actually say it.

cheshire grin followed by a hello.
It's not champagne. It's really ginger ale and ripple. I call it...champipple.

1) look for her
2) find her
3) hold the eye contact
4) I then walk over and launch into something situational.
The opener is random, but the way you ask the question (tone, words, posture/body language, intensity) can set up the interaction.
I'm good @ wonderment and seriousness, but I like the serious question, followed with a tension breaking response to answer.
I think the open actually starts with 3.

Walk up to a group of girls and tell them you and your friends are having a debate and need a female opinion. The debate is do girls give head for their own enjoyment or just to please their boyfriends. Some girls are turned off by this but you'd be surprised how many actually get into it, with some even volunteering the finer points of what they like about it.

Have you guys ever seen that show 'The Pickup Artist'?
In that show the guy teaches the nerds to tell made up stories like a fight that supposedly just happened outside (but never did) to break the ice. I prefer situational because it can be tailored for the moment and makes for a more fresh approach.

"Can I ask your opinion. I know that moustaches are out at the moment, but its kind of charming in a way isn't it? what do you think?"
i tried this with some girls @ work. Most of them wanted to shave it off. You can have alot of fun with it. I was inspired by Roosh to grow it - simply as an opener. It gets people to look at me, and it can quickly lead into a flirtatious - "well I'd shave it off if it interfered with kissing".

Check out cajun's take on the opener:

Thats really nice stuff.
I think about some cool guys who sported moustaches. But I could find none. Burt Reynolds? 70s porn stars? did something crawl up onto my upper lip and die?
