Reminds me of one of my biology professors/advisors back in college. She had probably 10 strays in her office at any time.
Her office was constantly filled with the reek of ammonia and cat shit from all the litterboxes.

Just imagine sitting there trying to work out your curriculum plan with cats jumping all over the place, breathing through your mouth to avoid the stench.

I have to say, I feel sorry for this lady, and not in a pitying way.
Yes, perhaps she may have been an old spinster, but she was basically using her house as temporary shelter space for a charitable animal rescue organization she was involved with.
