Male Shaming: Man Caves

My grandfather was an electrician and a self taught woodworker. he built the extension to his home, of a bedroom, kitchen, bathroom and laundry with seperate toilet.

He had a toolshed of 40 years collection and worth a fortune with old school sidchrome stuff (Aussies know what I mean) that is now irreplaceable.**

It was stored in the toolshed because of safety reasons, not because his 'cute' activity was relegated to the man cave.

It had it's place because logic dictated where it should be stored, it's place had nothing to do with my grandmothers view on where it should be kept.

(** On a side note, IIRC Stanley was the U.S makers of exceptional quality tools once upon a time wasn't it? When made in the U.S and before they outsourced to China? Sidchrome was ours. )

Stanley was decent, now Snap-On tools are some of the best.

Need your own space.

Yeah, it's called your house.

The premise of a 'man cave' is that the home is hers, barring an allocated space for the man of the house.

The premise that she has agency over the home, and your space is appended so she 'grants' you your own space is what is wrong, not the room of male tastes itself.

The view that a man's space is an optional appendage, correlates to how the structure of marriage 2.0 and divorce rape makes the man himself an appended figure, something that orbits on the periphery and is there at the whim of female flavour.

Completely agree with you, this whole man cave thing doesn't make sense to me. Your whole house is your man cave, not some little space your owner/wife allows you to have.

Still, there is something cool about a man cave. The closest I can put it is Batman or Iron Man- total pimps, but they have this inner sanctum where everything revolves around them a bit "more" than in the rest of the house.

I suppose it's semantics really, I don't see anything wrong with having a part of the house dedicated to yourself, where you don't have to look at pink vases and fluffy pillows, but the way some reporters make it sound is as if the guy needs to ask for permission to have said space or that when he leaves his "man cave" he's entering the wife's domain.

If I ever settled down and have a family, the wife can have the house as long as I get a good shed, which I'll fill with toys, beer fridge, music system, fishing gear and lots of tools to fuck around with. I think every man needs a decent shed, we even have a song for it up in Canada, The Shed Song:

That picture above is pretty gay looking. It is not doing much for the image of man-cavers.

My brother was talking about about getting a man-cave. And at least he was man enough to admit he is a pussy for wanting one.

It's impossible to have a man cave in the UK, our homes are tiny compared to America. We have to have sheds, shitty little wooden sheds from B&Q. Up and down the country there are millions of men whose only place of escape is the bottom of the garden in a shitty creosoted shed.

Sad.

Any Kiwis on here? Apparently it's a brave woman who comes between a NZ male and his beloved shed. [Image: smile.gif]

Is it because a goat is kept inside a shed? [Image: banana.gif]

"Man cave" is in a banned words thread I set up a while back.

It is a denigrating term and as already said, designates a small amount of shared domestic living space to be set up for the male member of the couple as he wishes.

I wonder if the term was coined by marketers, to encourage couples to set up a "playroom" for adult males that then needs to be decorated and accessorized like a teen's bedroom.

Vs. doing what men do in France, get a mistress?

If women weren't inept at carpentry and tinkering, and they actually had interesting hobbies like guys do, they could just build their own fucking caves.

Why would they need to do that? Nowadays, modern women have the run of the entire house 90% of the time. They don't need "caves".

Honestly, the emergence of these man caves makes me more sad than anything. They're a true testament to how isolated and disenfranchised the modern Western man is.

The term itself sounds fucking gay.

A man cave is a little part of a house where a pussy-whipped beta stores the last shreds of his dignity and can go admire them for a few minutes every now and then before returning to the Barbie Playhouse he paid for and is a slave in.

If you need to carve out a special room in your house that you enjoy, whereas the other rooms are feminized, then you already lost.

I have a man cave. I call it "my apartment."

I was going to post something along these lines. I've got married friends with man caves. As cool as they are, I still shake my head. All of their "caves" are either in the garage or converted garages. It's as if masculinity must be banished from the main homestead because it's too offensive or something.

My "man cave" is my living room. I can sit there for hours, by myself, in silence, and be utterly happy. I've got a great sound system that's over 20 years old. I've got two bookshelves; one for cookbooks and others with classics by James Joyce, Bukowski, Hunter Thompson, and Vonnegut. There's a single painting on the wall; a Van Gogh print. There's persian rugs on the floor, a wood coffee table with a single orchid on it, and a bunch of family heirlooms from Turkey and Bulgaria. Ron Burgundy ain't got shit on me. There's 5 guitars stacked up, one of them a 1970 green hollow body Orlando that's plugged into my amp that's big enough to piss off neighbors 3 blocks away. There's a wine rack with a constantly revolving selection of obscure red wines and a cabinet with bar supplies and high end tequila, rum, cognac and liqueurs. In that same cabinet there's a few crumbs of cocaine, another nearly spent baggy of molly, and about an eighth of ground up weed and some rolling papers. There's no T.V.

I fucking love my place.

Got some pics?

Women are afraid of man caves like Freza was afraid of the Saiyans! Because if we as men would rise up... women would be in deep shit!

Can we get any married man feedback on this? Single guys professing they don't need a man cave is a bit redundant.

thedude's place sounds bad-ass for sure, but something tells me he'd change it up if he had a wife and kids running around, no matter how strong his frame.

And don't start in with me on that married men aren't real men story.

I go back and forth about this. I started to build one out after my wife moved in but then I stopped and realized that not only does she not bother me anywhere in the house, but if I wanted her to leave any room all I have to do is point and she goes out. She also would bring me alcohol or other things.

I have my study with servers, PCs, and other IT work-related junk that only I would use upstairs. So in some ways, I kinda have one, but not really. I don't even have a TV in here yet. With a kid now, I find myself coming up here more to get away from all that crying and noise. It never bothered me if my wife came up here by herself.

As I get more closer to being financially and location independent with the goal of wanting to split time living in Asia and the US, the idea of a large enough house with enough rooms where I can do that, is quickly losing it's appeal.

There is no need for these things abroad. Men's spaces in Asia tend to be a KTV bar or a bathhouse with hoes. Their whole idea is to get out of the house, not stay in it, if you want space from the wife or kids.

I guess I cannot answer your question afterall BB. [Image: undecided.gif]

"Cave" has very negative connotations.

It's prehistoric , boorish, "unevolved", antiquated, and childish to those who denounce them as such. It suggest the guy isn't "mature."

Even worse, it isn't considered "rebellious" in any way- which has some positive connotations - because it is assumed once you are old enough to have your own place, you should be living to accommodate women. You are too old to be rebellious.

I would never refer to your male space as a "cave" if I were you, unless you literally live within a hollowed out rock formation (which in that case, hey!)

I do think the way the phrase is used in modern discussion is denigrating. It's the sad beta husband's solitary space in the marital home, where he is relegated to the depths of the basement to engage in whatever embarrassing, silly hobbies the wife begrudgingly allows.

As a general idea, having space in the home dedicated to the man is a good idea. It just used to be called the "den" or the "office" or "workshop".

Personally, it seems there are two camps in this thread - the people living alone, and the people living with a family. The two viewpoints are going to be different. I live on my own and my flat is my 'man cave'. Everything is just the way I like it. I'm not an interior decorator, but I do have definite tastes I wouldn't want to compromise on. That said, if you're living together and particularly with a family, there is some degree of compromise that goes into making it a family home. And I'm not naive enough to think I wouldn't want to set aside my own space if I'm ever in that situation.

But all that being said - if I was ever house-hunting with a woman and she pointed at some musty back room in the basement and said "oh honey, that would be the perfect man cave!" .....

Of course the feminists have latched onto the phrase and re-purposed it to fit their own wants, now parroting about the necessity of 'woman caves' in the house.
Yeah, you've got a woman cave. I call it the kitchen.
