Here are a few more.

Lee Scratch Perry has been making music forever but this fairly recent (and untypical track) is appropriate for the forum. Poom Poom is Jamaican slang for Pussy.

And a whole box set dedicated to songs about Pussy ("Pussy catch a fire", "Dub a poom poom", "Play With Your Pussy" etc etc) on YouTube.

I see this guy uploaded all of his Trojan box sets (by style) to YouTube. All historical stuff but tons of gems there.

Cant believe i miss this thread
If I had to pick one reggae song to start someone out on regga it would be Garnett Silk - Complaint With Buju

The beat is aggressive, the tone is melodic and the lyrics are just.

Love Rastafari...
If you do wrong they complain
Even if you call the father's name it's the same
What they want us to do
Don't they know this is nothing new
Why won't they do what they want
And let me do my thing they should be thankful
There's lights of hope are still shining, shining

If you do wrong they complain
Even if you call the father's name it's the same
What they want us to do
Don't they know this is nothing new
Why won't they do what they want
And let me do my thing they should be thankful
There's lights of hope are still shining, shining

Let Jah rise and the heathen scatter
Have to give thanks and praises no matter
Even if the flames is getting hotter & hotter
Every one should know I don't believe in a rumor
Children arise from sleep & slumber
Don't come to bow, come to conquer
Strictly love why you envy your brother
Don't let them re-arrange you in a different manner

If you do wrong they complain
Even if you call the father's name it's the same
What they want us to do
Don't they know this is nothing new
Why won't they do what they want
And let me do my thing they should be thankful
There's lights of hope are still shining, shining

Why should I change to gain acceptance
Can't tell a next man how to wear his pants
Lift up the name of Jah in abundance
Every single thing we do, we are liable
To get a sentence
But we won't be like a flea just like how the more we see
The less you hear we speak
My brother don't you be like a stubborn sheep

Blessed are he when men shall revile you
And persecute you, say all manner of evil
Against you falsely, for Jah sake
Rejoice I say and be exceedingly glad
For great is your reward
For so persecute they the prophets before you and me

If you do wrong they complain
Even if you call the father's name it's the same
What they want us to do
Don't they know this is nothing new
Why won't they do what they want
And let me do my thing they should be thankful
There's lights of hope are still shining, shining

Let Jah rise and the heathen scatter
Have to give thanks and praises no matter

I'm much more into indie rock/pop and I don't have much knowledge of reggae songs/bands though i listen to it from time to time. Sizzla and Pressure have some good stuff. I used to listen a band called Rebelution. Back then I used to listen this song a lot;

I really like Mikey Dread, who I discovered through The Clash -- he's all over "Sandinista!" and sang on some of their b-sides.

I think his best album is "World War III" from 1980, but anything from this period is good. There is also a greatest hits called "Best Sellers" that's fantastic.

He sometimes also incorporates elements of American soul music into his sound, like in the below song, which is loosely based on an old '60s number called "Grazing in the Grass."

And he's hilariously eccentric. Check the mistake/intro here and the way the band jacks up the best towards the end (their punk influence).

I'm big into reggae music, too. I actually just started a Mixcloud channel the other day and made a Dub/Roots tape. There's a tracklist if you want to know the songs/artists.

I can't figure out how to put up this song. I have not heard anything else from this group but fell in love with this song/remix a few years ago.

I love reggae although oddly enough dont really know many artists by name. When Im in jamaica I go to a lot of live shows which is really cool. At home ai normally just listen to reggae channels on streaming radio stations. Many are totally commercial ie lotsa bob marley and red red whine and stuff like that but some are decent. I would listem to those and use those to find some artists you like

Honestly had no idea. I always thought that dancehall was part of reggae.

I think the categorization of music and artists fuck with my head.

Aren't there dancehall artists that do reggae music?

Just wondering for knowledge sake.

Edit : wiki got him down as a reggae AND Dancehall artist. Inherently I kind of knew this but still wondering ..

Yeah, sorry man, I didn't want to say anything since 'Intl was already on it, but that was like posting some trap shit in a thread about hip hop and saying "Y'all are missing out." In the reggae game it's important to know your "roots", literally, and then expand out from there. Outta here with that slackness, ha. *Thumbs Up*

Ok I don't know as much about reggae "game" as you said like you guys do. And before I go ahead, no disrespect to anyone. Just my opinion and feel free to convince me otherwise. I'd be happy to hear.

I see it like this: Someone posts a thread titled "Rap" and then I post some Biggie videos and say "y'all are missing out" because I genuinely thought so. And then a response says Biggie is a hip-hop artist and this thread is about Rap.

Reggae has got sub-genre's right? One of those happens to be Dancehall. Because Vybz does Dancehall doesn't stop him from being a reggae artist to me just as much as Biggie stops becoming a rapper because he does hip-hop. Why ignore skills that artists have by categorizing them like that?

Much respect to you cats pointing out root music but I thought this was more of an expansive thread on "Reggae." If not maybe the thread should have said "Reggae roots."

Sorry to derail but hip hop involves the entire culture such as graffiti, breakdancing, dj'ing and rapping. Some people often confuse the terms because since it got popular (went mainstream), you have people saying they like rap and not hip hop when rap is a form that is within hip hop.

Dancehall, in my opinion is similar to the evolution (or devolution) of modern day rap to the era when you had more conscious raps.

Dancehall spawns from reggae music (don't quote me on this - resident Jamaican posters feel free to correct) where you have someone singing lyrics over existing beats very similar to the concept behind raps.

Most dancehall music is raunchy, vulgar, indecent and promotes womanising, anti-homosexuality and violence through the music.

That being said, I usually play dancehall when I'm lifting weights in the gym [Image: banana.gif]

Aswad - A New Chapter of Dub. Dub version of the LP A New Chapter. First Reggae album I got. Great stuff:

Black Uhuru - Sensimilla. Utterly classic record.

Steel Pulse - Earth Crisis. More poppy and catchy, but great tune.

Burning Spear - Garvey's Ghost. I think this is another one of those "dub version of a roots LP" things. Another excellent album.

Black Roots - In Session. Still discovering this one, seems great though
