The Self Improvement Year

The Self Improvement Year

I have always seen this forum as more of a place where men go and try to improve themselves than just a place to share techniques on how to game girls, so I thought I would start a thread about how I plan to improve myself and invite you guys to join me and come along on my journey and maybe even encourage some of you to do the same.

Why do I want to improve myself?

Well, it's simple really. I want to be the best that I can be, I want to finally fulfill my potential and not just sit around masturbating and watching The Wire on my laptop. I want to go out into the world and grab it by the scruff of the neck. I want to be successful and bang chicks but more than anything, I want to be happy, truly happy.

In Spider Man, Uncle Ben said to Peter:"Peter, these are the years when a man changes into the man he's going to be for the rest of his life. Just be careful who you change into" and that really resonated with me.
I'm 17 right now and for the last year I was very depressed. I was always in negative thoughts and moody as hell. I kept up my good grades and still got some girls but I could feel that I was not happy and that the girls I was gaming could somehow sense that I wasn't happy either.
I felt like I was slowly drawn into a dark hole and now I am trying to get out of it, while I still can.
So now I am setting out on a journey, a journey to become the best I can be and be that person for the rest of my life. You don't get anywhere from sitting on your couch. You are entitled to the world, so fucking get out there and go and get it.

On what will I improve?

I looked long and hard at myself and tried to figure out what I want to improve on.
The first thing I want to change is my physique. I'm a scrawny 135lbs at 6', so starting this week I am on a hardcore workout routine, eat protein and improve my diet and health generally.

If you take good care of your body, your body will take good care of you

There are many other things I will improve on but this is a short overview:

1) Read more

From now on I will try to read interesting books every day and not just sporadically. Reading is the best way to further educate yourself.

2) Get more sleep and get up early even when there is no school

How can you make the most of the day when you are up till 3 am surfing the internet and wake up at 2 pm and can't drag yourself out of bed?

3) Stop wasting time In LOTR: The Fellowship Of The Ring Gandalf dropped this gem:"So do all who live to see such times, but that is not for them to decide. All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given to us."
I blocked stupid websites and porn sites on my laptop and will cut down on my computer usage. Nothing good ever comes of browsing through 9GAG while you could do something productive.
Use your time wisely, it is all you have.

4) Stop masturbating

On every forum where a large number of men congregate there are many threads about this. Since I've stopped whacking off I've noticed a huge increase in motivation and confidence and will keep going without fapping.

5) Master some new skills

Find some things that interest you and then master them. For me, those things are guitar and chess and I will focus all my spare time on becoming better in these two things.

6) Appreciate life and be positive

For the whole last year I was a little bitch. I thought nothing was going my way and was ready to say farewell to this life.
But then I actually thought about how lucky I am.
Look at it this way.
You are healthy, you can walk and communicate. You have no handicaps.
Your whole body functions like it should. Since you are reading this forum you are probably above average intelligence and possess a fair share of intellect. You swallowed the red pill and know how the game of life works.
I mean, sure you may have a big nose or you would like to be taller or you are really poor right now. But will you let such trivial things get you down? No.
You have everything going for you, make the most of it.
Appreciate life and nature. Be a person people want to be around.
Fake it till you make it.

7) Overcome depression

No matter how hard it is right now, it will get better. But only if you do something about it, it won't magically disappear.
Every time I get depressed I watch this video. It fills me with hope every time I watch it. "Even darkness must pass. A new day will come. And when the sun shines it will shine out the clearer. "

Maybe I have convinced you to better yourself or maybe you already are at a stage where you are happy with who you are. But there is always room for improvement.
In my opinion the purpose of life is to be the best person you can be and enjoy every moment, you never know if it will be your last.
If you want happiness, you have to go out and get it. Nobody will give it to you.

The Self Improvement Year

Inspiring post. Just turned 16 today and it looks like I am in the same boat as you. I have quite a lot going for me but still can't help feel depressed and apathetic. As far as skills are concerned I want to become damn good at poker, (enough to win make a profit) and hopefully master 3 or 4 languages by the time I'm 21. Glad I found this forum at this age, it's a gold mine of knowledge.
Good luck in your pursuits

Your awareness alone at 17 that man should always be looking to improve will put you so far ahead of others your age, it's not even funny. Think about this: Men peak around 35-38. You are 17, meaning you haven't even been alive for the amount of time you'll have to work on every facet of your life before you hit your prime.

I think the best way actually achieve your goals is to make a list, stick it on your desk/computer screen and strictly follow it.
Been going for a week and feel a lot better

As a little piece of advice, watch out with trying to change everything at once. If you fail, you can end up hating yourself for it. Set your goals high, but not too high. This list looks fine for one year, but maybe break it up into monthly goals, ie 'read one hour a day for the next month'.

Or, you could make it: "read half an hour during the day and half an hour before bed". When you have this habit down, your sleeping habit might be a lot easier to attain as well. (I cured my own sleeping problems just by forcing myself to read before bed). Try to add another habit the next month.

Sometimes, the best strategy is to set the threshold low. (like the 1 approach/day habit).

Good luck

Man, that's pretty ambitious for a young lad like yourself, when I was your age, all I did was fuck around and squander my time. You have a great mindset, Sir.
Just one piece of advice: I'm a Project Manager and my line of work, goals have to be SMART = Specific, Measurable, Accepted, Realistic and Time bound. Don't just set your goals, operationalize them!
