Why not pay the extra 140 for the i7 processor?

Is that bad value for money?

Actually it isnt bad. While dual-core i5 and i7 are similar (with a difference in memory cache), you wont notice the speed difference much.

But the quad-core i7 has a different internal architecture than the dual-core i5. You will notice its speed when running CPU intensive apps like Photoshop.

Does a normal person need it? No.

Like I said earlier in this thread, buy an i5 Mac computer and use the extra money for RAM and SSD. Not only does it boost your performance, it future proofs you when you decide to sell it in 2-3 years (as an example).

I just got a MBA 13 inch 1.3GHz processor with an upgraded to the 8GB of Ram and 256GB hard drive. I ordered from Macmall.com as they don't charge tax and have free shipping, plus sell at a slight discount to the Mac store.

If you go to.... http://appleinsider.com/mac_price_guide/# You get an extra 2% discount with the code APPLEINSIDER02

You can see i got my macbook air for $1,333.74 total. If I would have bought the same thing from the apple.com store because of sales tax it would have cost me $1,514.42. So I saved $180.68.

I am really happy with the MBA so far. The speed of the SSD hard drive is crazy. The only reason I could see in me wanting the MBP would be the Retina screen but I can't justify the $300+ price just for a better screen when the MBA screen is still pretty darn good.

I got the same one. Arrived today along with about $200 of other random stuff (MS Office, Logitech Anywhere mouse, etc.). This is a big change...I've been fucking with PCs since I can remember.

After about two hours of fucking around on this (just emails, web browsing) I have to say I REALLY like it. You can't get the true feeling of a Mac just by going to the store.

I've run into some moments of slight frustration (where is my deleted messages folder...all I can find is "show deleted messages" but I just want to see ONLY deleted messages)...but google is helping with that.

So far I'm really happy I made the change.

While I was thinking: when replacing the MBP hard drive with an SSD can is that going to improve the battery life of the MBP? Can you add the MBA battery into the MBP? That would be the ultimate laptop!

Anyone has any info on when the new MBP is going to be launched? I cant wait and been without laptop now as the previous one died and been using my phone for the past week or so. Part of me wants to run to the store qnd get a Mac, the other part is telling me to wait a little more for the new MBP....cant wait anymore!!

Apple hasn't launched an official release date yet because they want all consumers purchasing all the latest products such as MBA with Haswell and new iPhone collections. If they announced a release date for the MBP with Haswells now...then people would save up their coin for that new product instead of blowing cash at full value for current inventory, lol.

VP - what was wrong with your MBA? Didn't you return the MBP for that? With a nomadic lifestyle (or just spending time in coffee shops all day like Roosh) I think the MBA is the way to go. No matter what they do the Retina display is going to eat more battery. And it will probably cost $300+ more. Is it worth it?

If the new MBP comes out prior to me leaving the country (2nd week of Oct.) I will probably be returning my MBA.

Otherwise, I'm happy with it. The screen is the only shortfall, otherwise this thing is sick. It was shipped here charged and I've been on it 3-4 hours today...I'm still at 53% battery. [Image: banana.gif]

Big press conference event was last night as they were bashing PC, their tablets, lack of direction, and netbooks lol.

Universities are getting these items around early November. Might not hurt to try a college bookstore to get a 100 dollar discount (most times they'll assume you're a student). I'm sure to make my purchase middle of next month.

Those new MB Pro's are legit with the massive battery life Haswell has given them. If I was in the market for a laptop I would pick one up.

but my 2011 MBA is still going strong.

i cant see needing a new laptop for a few more years, sadly

because i love me a new laptop!

Does it make sense to upgrade the ram to 16 GB or that is over the top on the new MBP? I feel the 8GB is more than enough but more is better I guess specially as you cant upgrade it after on. Thoughts guys?

I bought a laptop with 4GB back in 2009 thinking it was good enough for the future. By 2012 it was useless and laggy. It's better to futureproof yourself now.

If you're doing heavy video editing or weather prediction models then getting the extra ram makes sense, otherwise I think it's overkill. If you're writing this off as a business expense on your taxes then it would make sense to upgrade too.

Have a PC-based laptop? That is probably why you're experiencing lags like myself as my current one has 2GB of RAM from 2006-2007...slower than balls and on death bed. Macbooks even with 2-4GB of RAM have had much better memory distribution and efficiency however.

In the keynote event 2 nights back, one presenter indicated how 6GB are actually crammed into the 4GB of RAM because of a new memory compression feature with these new Haswell Pros. I myself will however get the 8GB just to future proof the laptop in case.

If one has a good friend or hookup, they can even purchase the 16GB of RAM specifically for the Macbooks from amazon.com (check compatibility of course) and get it installed in future once the warranties die off.

16 gb is overkill IMO. Swap to SSD will be fast enough if you're running huge data analysis. That, or just use your desktop or a lab computer.

Also, correct me if I'm wrong but isn't the RAM hard wired to the motherboards on all the new Macbooks? You cannot upgrade later by adding a stick.

I'm gonna buy one later today, either 13in Macbook Pro or the cheapest Air. Still haven't decided.

Only thing that bugs me is that I can't easily install Win8 without BootCamp.

sure you can, just use one of the VM's out there.

unless you want to run it natively, and in that case, what other way would there be?

Yup, it was a HP laptop. As much as I hate it, my next laptop will be a 15" MBP.

So with the new MBPs is it worth it getting the old model and just adding parts to it if and when needed?

Will make by buy mid-November likely at UT Arlington. Apple usually offers a $100.00 discount, but it could be a 100 dollar itunes card instead (meh I already download music through other means....). 8GB RAM it is, but with 13 Inch Laptop.

Not only is Mac more efficient, but the amount of foreign language work you can do with that device & friendly keyboard shortcuts is crazy.

My current laptop has a 1 or 2 second boot-to-login time. I want fast boot and reliable performance. The fewer things that have to work together, the less likelihood that something breaks. That's why a VM is a suboptimal solution for me. I want the OS to be as close to the hardware as possible.

I've been a life long pc user but am thinking about getting a mac this time.

I like to travel and edit videos while doing your basic web surfing.

I was thinking about a 13" MacBook pro with retina. It would be small enough for traveling but hopefully large enough to handle some video editing.

Thoughts?
