I speak Spanish and Portuguese to varying degrees, and there are tons of young South American immigrants where I live.
I go into a bar, some girls are speaking Portuguese, and I have a natural opener. I say some stuff in Portuguese, and my accent is good enough that they really get confused about me. 100% of the time I get "WHERE ARE YOU FROM" with very wide, curious eyes.
Well, I'm from NY...
"Why are you learning Portuguese?" Less wide-eyed, more natural curiosity.
Well, I think it's a beautiful language, and I want to go to Brazil.
Then we start talking about Brazil, travel, learning languages etc.
But for them, Brazil is where they shit, it's not anything exciting. I've travelled to Mexico and I'm going to Colombia soon, and they're just like "those places are dangerous, I wouldn't want to go there." The mystique of travel to those places is quite different for people growing up amongst severe poverty in simmilar countries who know just how crappy life there can be.
Do you guys who spit game in other tongues in the USA just game them like anyone else, without making much reference to their foreign aspect, or do you do things specially to accomodate immigrants?
