A 2 ton drain on my wallet!

I spent way too much money on it to start with and it needed far more work on it than I thought. Even after examining a lot of it pre-purchase.

I've rebuilt a considerable amount to get it road trip ready. The previous owner (previous idiot) did all sorts of shoddy work on it and the so called dealer that serviced it wasn't any better. It was running horribly rich and I tracked the problem to a bad intake manifold gasket. Digging through the receipts, I found the repair. Once I tore down the top end, I discovered that the shop put gasket sealant around the gasket which the service manual explicitly says NOT to do. Once it was rebuilt, instead of fixing it right, they retarded the timing and drilled a hole in the thermostat to get it to pass smog.

I left them a 1 star review on Yelp fifteen years after the fact with a picture of the receipt, the thermostat, and the gasket.

The evap system still has a small leak somewhere even though i've torn the gas tank out TWICE now. New hoses, clamps, and everything. I think the charcoal canister is part of the problem. I need to invest in a smoke machine to pressure the system and see where it's coming out of. My smog check is due in 3 months and i'm nervous it won't pass.

The most recent rebuild I had to do was the power steering system.

That was over 3 weeks ago. Anytime I get close to my tools and work bench in the garage I get a panic attack. Easily one of the hardest jobs I have ever done. [Image: confused.gif]

But fuck me does she drive like a true beast mobile. Living in LA, I drive through the west end fairly regularly with six figure cars and sports monsters.

Still get people staring. F*ck me I love driving this car.

@dicknixon72 is correct it's a NM35 Nissan Stagea. Runs a 2.5 liter turbo VQ25DET engine and ATTESA 4WD system (aka Nissan GTR).
I like that thing what's the inside like?

Express vans have a badass v8 engine in them.

I remember the monster engine that was in my old motorhome, an 8.1L V8. It was huge but still got 10-12 MPG. I believe the 8.1L was an option for 2500 and 3500 full size Chevy trucks, but otherwise was rare to see in anything but delivery trucks and RVs.

I'm considering selling my hyundai and buying a used pickup. Most in the cheap range (less than 3k) are 170k mileage range. If i'm spending that little is there any chance of getting something reasonably reliable?

I bought an F-150 with the V8 from my local surplus for $6000 and it had 151,000 so far it's been doing fine.

It really depends on how well the engine/transmission is built, I had a dodge truck that had one of those shitty magnum engines and it had issues even at 120k. Generally if I'm thinking about something with high miles I'll do an internet search for "ford f-150 v8 reliability" or something like that. You'll get many results from forums where people will tell of their experiences and hopefully you'll learn if there are any fatal problems with a certain kind of engine. For example most Ford 2 valve V8s shoot their spark plugs out if you don't have them torqued down good.

All my families Vortec trucks have lasted into the 3-400,000 range. Best bet is to find a die hard truck lover and have him take it for a test drive with you. The feel of a truck will tell you most of what you need to know.

The express vans either came with the 5.3 or 6.0 vortec motors. The 8.1 was built to be an alternative to the diesel engines chevys built.they are vortecs too but they aren’t popular because not too many were made and there is only 1? Company that makes aftermarket parts for them.Plus they were heavy as shit. Chevy releasing a 6.6 (396c.i) in the new gen silverado/denali ,cant wait to see the performance specs on that.

As far as the other vortec series engines (LS cousin). Hotrod took a 5.3 from the junkyard ,slapped two turbos on it and it out down 1000+ hp without modifying the internals.

Well, they took off the heads just to find out that was actually the 4.8 (the smallest v8 of the series) instead of the 5.3 . Il leave it at that.
