Bulgaria is dreadful outside of urban centers. Everytime you see a dilapilated house and think "there's no way someone lives there", you'll see clothes hanging outside to dry and realize there are third world countries in Europe.

Lol with some people here....

If bulgaria is a shithole , do you imagine how many countries in Asia , Africa and latin america could be? How would you call them?

There are many areas in big cities in western europe that look worse than Iraq.

Are France and England shitholes also?

Yes to parts of England and France.

Its more tragic when a capital city is a shithole over some former industrial town that was never meant to be beautiful,

It does surprise me when I see people suggesting that Canadian / American / European cities are the biggest shitholes they've been to... if that is the case suggest you NEVER EVER go to:

Mumbai, India

In no particular order...

Slums everywhere, air pollution, terrible smells, rotting garbage, people shitting in the streets, weekly rioting, gang raping, beaches covered in trash, rats everywhere as big as cats, aggressive stray dogs, beggars who have had their hands cut off by their handlers to earn more, horrendously packed trains, children working on building sites, hugest and most horrendously shocking red light district in asia, high HIV rate, kidnapping and trafficking of children, ethnic tensions (muslim vs hindu), holes in pavements, awful hot humid climate, ugly frigid women, rip-off prices for imported goods, zero food hygiene, cabs with bedbugs, filthy hospitals, appalling traffic, corrupt police and officials, feminist ngo women, amoral elites who do not obey any laws, crap music and films, overpriced alcohol, lazy workers, dangerous elevators, collapsing buildings, constant harassment of white women, high rents, terrorist attacks, etc. etc

Other than that... it's great.

Laos. Beautiful people in a 5th World country. They blame Thai for stealing their land, which isn't that much better.

I agree with Mumbai. As I have many good Indian friends in West, and I love Indian food, it hurts to write this but:

Worst slums I have seen, terrible smells, rotting garbage, people shitting in the streets, rats, beggars, BIG holes in pavements if you fall in you might die, zero food hygiene on the street stalls.

I also agree with HIV rates but I read an official report stating that HIV rate is 50 % among the prostitutes. The report was prepared by a respected Western Agency. I assume high HIV rate is due to the prostitutes so this forum should not mind as they are not engaged in P4P.

India is probably the last country I'd ever want to visit. I like the Indian food though however even the Indian restaurant near my house has questionable food hygiene practices.

I live here willingly but Saigon is by most definitions a shit hole. You're breathing in moto exhaust 24/7. Can't walk anywhere because of the traffic and lack of sidewalks. There's not much greenery, and parks. The humidity, heat, rain, etc. can trap you in your apartment for days which gets depressing if you're not careful. And Vietnamese food is probably the most overrated cuisine I've ever come across. It's basically bahn mi, com tam, pho and 20 other types of soup.

But somehow the hordes of sexy asian women make up for it.

Where are you staying there? When I was there I literally walked around the whole of the city centre on the sidewalks.

Siem Reap, Cambodia.

Traffic is dangerous and crazy, roads are dirty. Hell, there's a small river close to my place which pretty much is stacked on trash, and people live around it. Stepping on it.

I don't dare to eat in the local places, fuck that, I prefer to be alive. Ah, and that comes with a price. Eating out in Western places costs you $10+

I found Siem Reap to be quite charming and lots of character. There were cool cafes, bars, gyms, cowork spaces, interesting people. Yes, it's poor and the streets aren't so clean, like most of the world. I rode bicycles all over the place and didn't find the traffic to be overwhelming. But this town's economy is steadily increasing due to a stream of international tourists, and I got a positive impression of the local people and it was relatively safe. Yes it can be relatively expensive to eat at western style places, but that is the same as with most developing countries.

Dare I say, if you find Siem Reap to be the biggest shithole you've ever been to, then I will assume you haven't been to a large number of other real shitholes out there on this planet to compare it with.

I agree. Siem Reap is a fantastic little city to visit.

I cant imagine living there as its a city essentially developed around visiting ankor wat. After doing ankor wat, the night market, and pub street theres little left to do. We did two days and that was more than enough.

Note to anyone in asia: ankor wat is easily the best historical site I've ever seen (and I've been to many of them).
