I used to think Modest Mouse sucked until I heard pre 2000 Modest Mouse. Pretty good shit. They have a pretty crazy story behind them too.

During the pre-2000 time, the music style ranges between hard punk to soft lo-fi, and everything in-between. The earlier you go, the more unique it sounds, as much of it was recorded on home equipment.

If any of you guys want to get into the musical mind of many hipster/young urban intellectual women, check out "The Woods" by a band called Sleater Kinney. It came out a few years ago, but a lot of people hold it as one of, if not the best rock album in the past decade. I tend to agree with them.

I'm listening to it right now. Its one of my favorite albums. Its especially relevant to many hispter women because the band is all female, and had a good reputation even before this, their magnum opus. The band even split up after the album tour, after over a decade of being together, to go out on a high note.

Most of it is hard rock though, to give fair warning. Also, don't judge it by the first song, which is a little less accessible then the rest of the album. As a matter of fact, if you don't listen to much indie type rock music, just skip the first song altogether. I often do, and i don't even mind it.

I've been hooked on this song lately. I've been listening to it for years, but I just realized the things Brad Nowell is saying in this song. He's talking about his Heroin addiction and how he's trying to get his fix. He knows he should kick the habbit, but can't and preffers to be like the other dj's (singers). I also believe he's making refferences to making his songs while on heroin, when he's talking about "And God may find a reason, Well I'm sure you'll find a rhyme, Because it takes up nearly all my time." It's an upbeat sounding song with a very deep significance to the artists life. It's very deep and gives you an idea of how life as an aspiring musician in the 90's, hooked on heroin, could have been. Many famous artists from the 90's could relate to this song.

I love everything from late 60's-80's hardrock, 80's-90's hiphop/R&B to Latin/Carib music.
However latley I have been on this 80's Synth pop and House/Deep House/Lounge kick. I really like these guys http://www.nakedmusic.com/new/
They have produced some great artist like Aya. I wish this music was more prevalent in the US because I heard it a lot in Europe. However it could just be that Atlanta is lacking a place that plays this consistently.

This is all subjective, but anythng that is unique and thoroughly genuine in nature. I think most pop on MTV is crap, most new metal is crap, most hip hop is crap. But there are still some good bands out there that regardless of status have sick talent. To use a couple examples, Red Hot Chilli Peppers and U2 are two bands that have never really gotten weak or sold out their style and still are heard around the world for doing what they love.

Almost as bad as the man that buys every new hit artist for the sake of bieng cool, are the dudes (mostly SWPL's ) that go and find the most obscure shit they can, just for the sake of bieng obscure. Myself, I will sit and Lysten to Run DMC or Lynyrd Skynyrd and drink a Coors beer while some of these dudes want to sip herbal low calorie, hemp beer and listen to an atmospheric DJ from holland.

Now if you realy like hemp beer with a funny foreign name for $8 a mug and some some beat poet whispering over a casio keyboard beat, then more power to you. Buf if you are doing it to 1 up your other "progressive" neighbor for bieng unique, then that just makes you gay.

I pretty much agree with this 100%. This is basically my take on music to the T. I love the music I love. Just about every type of genre and every type of style. If it sounds good to me, I'm listening to it. I have CDs from friends of mine that have played maybe 20 shows and only have a coulpe hundred fans, to Red Hot Chili Peppers and The Beatles, to shit you've never heard of, to bands that were big in the 90s now no one knows who they are. I think if you go out of your way to listen to music that isn't "popular," even though you know damn well that "40 ozs to freedom" was a great CD, you are a fag. And if your music collection consists of only the latest pop stars and top 40 artists, you are also a fag (Not really, I have tons of friends like this, especially girls, but I would say their taste sucks).

That is the point Int'l. Some stuff like Led Zeppelin, the Beatles is Mega popular but just amazing musically. Unfortunately there really isn't the time and preperation to go into making good full length album's anymore. Now a days with all the internet sites, artists are putting up songs they took 5 minutes to create and there is already a re-mix version of a song before it even hits the streets. It's clear that artists try to juice every buck they can out of a song. There is no real soul and sweat put into the studio with the real deep tracks that took a team or band of people to make. Anymore you have one who might not have even played live, making a song on his Mac book and pushing it out on the internet.

To me its like fast food and fine dining, you have a chef with a craft or a fry cook and a burger. They both might taste good when you are starving hungry, but one is obviously going to be an art, while also prob. better for you, the other just fills a void in your stomach.

Personally, I hate punk/alt-rock. I like some techno (Arty especially, Alpha 9, Mango), and I like a lot of gay shit. Like Usher's Confessions album, love that shit. Umm I like club music a lot, check out http://www.fratbeats.com, I like their techno and kickback mixes, and I guess some of the songs on their Hot 25 mix.
