"New Oregon law might make cigarettes prescription only"

Ok, that's really gone too far. I am all against smoking and for putting in demotivational/protectvie measures such as indoor smoking bans and higher insurance premiums, but this is crazy. What do I care if someone is smoking somewhere, as long as it doesn't affect me? Let people live their lives, for gods' sake!

Just being wanting to share this for awhile.
It is a short article by Stephen Jay Gould. And is a really useful analysis of the different ways the statistics behind the 'average life expectancy' can be interpretated, when you have being diagnosed with cancer. Really interesting stuff.

This is just the beginning in terms of how the USA, doctors, and pharmaceutical companies are trying to seize total control. I was with a friend at the doctor's office yesterday because he needed some prescriptions for a certain medical condition. When it came time for the doc to take out his prescription pad he asked my friend what pharmacy he was planning on getting the meds from. Surprized, my friend asked him why. His doctor told him that the majority of prescriptions are now filed and sent electronically to the pharmacy of a person's choice. My friend named his pharmacy, thanked the doc and we left. We got to the pharmacy less than 3 minutes later and sure enough, the prescription was already there with all my friends info ready to go. If things have come to this point I'd hate to see what comes next.

I can't wait to hear about the story of how the SWAT team came in and blasted some old lady in the face because she was smoking in her house. I think all drugs should be decriminalized. Addiction is a social problem, not a legal one.

Wasn't Oregon like the heroine capital back in the 90s?
I feel like as the year goes by, the more ridiculous laws are going to be.
Nope.

Lot's of money to be made smuggling cigarettes if this becomes law. Don't Native Americans have some sort of rights that supersede states laws in cases like this? In that case NA's in Oregon will be able to coin serious $'s. Also $'s for anyone else prepared to smuggle and face the possible legal consequences.
But this is not the most ridiculous state law I've seen recently out of the US. That honour has to go the California with their ban on Foie Gras that was actually passed by their legislature.

i just got back from smoking a cigar in a restuarant after my meal. no one minded, in fact many others were lighting up before and after their meal. i also walked down the street while nursing a beer. i would hate to see the fines and laws i broke if i did this in the US.
about oregon: my understanding is once property values got to high in the bay area (couple decades ago) the hippies moved north to oregon. this would explain the liberalism, feminism, police state news that frequently comes out of there.
