Tower Climbing

So I've been hearing a lot about the oil field suggestion, and wanted to present an alternative.

Climbing cell phone towers.

I've been in the business for 3 years now, and the pay is not bad. I make 22 an hour averaging about 70 hours a week. The best part is the per diem, about 75 a day just for being out of town.

This is hard work, no doubt about it, but you wont need a gym membership. If youre not afraid of heights, it can at times be incredible.

My typical month will have me staying in 4-5 different US cities, making 2000 a month in per diem and about 5000 a month in wages. I eat at a restaurant for every meal of the day.

At 22, because of this, I have a nice collection of suits, a 2012 dodge challenger, a great build and money in the bank

Look into it.

Is this line of work dangerous? Do you know of other people who have had injuries on the job?

Its always for a contractor, never through verizon or att directly.

There are companies everywhere, you just have to look around and do your homework.

Found this post. Seems like it would be fairly dangerous, especially if you weren't properly trained.

If all you worry about is the risk, youll never get the reward.

Whats 90k a year worth to you?

The risk doesn't match the reward in my opinion. If it's 10 times riskier than construction, it should pay 10 times more. So you should be paid 900k a year, not 90k a year.

Still this a good option for people that aren't afraid of heights and want to make some decent money.

What's the skill set required, besides a fearlessness of heights? Is this something someone can do straight out of high school or are there qualifications one needs to get?

You can definitely get in straight out of highschool.

All the training is on the job.

Its basically the hardest job in the world, but the rewards go beyond the money. Seeing a sunset 400 feet above a mountaintop comes to mind.

Or cracking open a cold beer at 300 feet after stacking the last section of new steel.

Chicks dig it too, they know they're not dealing with a pizza boy, get what im saying?

Climbing a few hundred feet will kill your approach anxiety like arsenic.

Does being a cop pay 10 times more than being a janitor?

The entry level requirements are low. Where else can you get 70 hours a week without a degree?

Being a cop can get you some 70 hour weeks. Last I checked, only 2 states (Minnesota and Illinois) require anything beyond a high school diploma and a clean record.

You'll never make 90k/year unless you're dirty, however. Even then, your results may vary.

If you are going to impose your will on the world, you must have control over what you believe.

Any sort of idea how getting into this field works? Prerequisites other than the balls to do it?

Do you know how easy it is to get into this work in Canada by any chance?

My apologies, you answered most of my questions.

However, would you say it is harder to do than a hard-core physical labor job such as roofing? (With the exception of the height issue)

How dangerous is this?
To be honest. I would try this. I love high places. and id rather be holding a pole that standing at the edge of a building?
100 out of 10k
what percent it that?

I would guess that alot of these accidents are either sheer freak accidents of overzealous climbers?

Do you know anyone thats fell of gotten hurt?

How many women are in his job? Where can I find the section of feminist movement fighting for equal numbers of men and women in this field?

Just curious.

Police officers have excellent retirement benefits. I have heard of them getting tons of overtime in their final years and retiring young with lifetime pensions of 100%+ of their usual salary.

The learning curve is short. You only fall once, which might be longer than the learning curve.

Hey, what's cell signal like on the towers? Which phone get best reception on top? Iphone or Android?

At that height I'd expect some oxygen deprivation due to a lowered air pressure.

Are you guys like divers, having to stop for breaks on the way up and down to get acclimatised?

Do you guys get short of breath at the top or have moments of confusion?

Its a cell tower, not a million foot bean stalk. No oxygen deprivation involved. You usually climb about fifty, take a break, repeat.

300 feet is about average for cell. Radio and TV can be much higher

Guys that see the height as the draw back to climbing are like guys that see drinking and socializing and suiting as the downside to flagging down a fly ass chica. Theyre missing half the fun and wont ever be as successful as the ones who enjoy the game for what it is.
