Blow to machismo as Spain forces men to do housework
http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2005/apr...nder.spain

Spanish men will have to learn to change nappies and don washing-up gloves under the terms of a new law designed to strike a blow at centuries of Latin machismo.

The law, due to be passed this month, is likely to provoke a revolution in family affairs in a country where 40% of men reportedly do no housework at all. It will oblige men to "share domestic responsibilities and the care and attention" of children and elderly family members, according to the draft approved by the Spanish parliament's justice commission.

This will become part of the marriage contract at civil wedding ceremonies later this year.

"The idea of equality within marriage always stumbles over the problem of work in the house and caring for dependent people," said Margarita Uría, of the Basque Nationalist party, who was behind what is an amendment to a new divorce law.

"This will be a good way of reminding people what their duties are. It is something feminists have been wanting for a long time." What about passing a law that obliges wives to have sex with their husbands at least 1/day? Yeah, didn't think so - HCE

Failure to meet the obligations will be taken into consideration by judges when determining the terms of divorces. Men who refuse to do their part may be given less frequent contact with their children. Men already don't get the children in 85% of cases and are screwed in divorce anyway, so this threat is ridiculous - HCE

Spanish women spend five times longer on housework than their husbands. Even where both have jobs outside the home, Spanish women still do three times as much work in the house. As it should be. Now, I wouldn't be opposed to equality in this area if women actually valued and chose the kind of men that likes sharing housework equally, but of course that isn't the case - HCE

"It is not just about housework, though. Women also end up doing most of the caring for the elderly," said Ms Uría.

A study five years ago by Spain's Centre for Sociological Investigation concluded that fathers spent an average of 13 minutes each day looking after their children. Working to feed the children doesn't consume any time, apparently - HCE

Only 19% of Spanish men thought it was right for mothers of school age children to have a full-time job. More than a third thought mothers should not work outside the home at all.

The change to the Spanish legal code will see domestic obligations added to a list of marital duties that currently includes fidelity, living together and helping one another.

The initiative has received the backing of all Spain's political parties, including those of a conservative or traditionally Catholic bent. (Just in case you thought that there was any different in misandry between liberals / socialists / traditionals / conservatives - HCE)

Ms Uría said that the Socialists, who run Spain's minority government and voted against the clause when the draft went through the commission, had told her that they, too, were now in favour of it.

That should guarantee that, when the law - which will also make divorce proceedings faster and easier - is voted on in parliament in the next few weeks, the obligation to share domestic chores will be added to the statute books.

This is so staggeringly stupid that I am at a loss for words. I've always been afraid of a man being pushed into indentured servitude or slavery in case his marriage fails and he is struck with unfair alimony / child support. Now the same can happen to you even without getting divorced.

What's next, a law mandating men to give women 20% of their paychecks based on "fixing the long-standing pay gap based on machismo"?

The only reason women do more housework is because their idea of clean is different. Men don't give a shit if a few things are lying around.

I'm sure Brazil is already working on that.

All they're doing is making men more reluctant to get married and have children. Feminists and their enablers continue to cut women's throats.

Oh they'll work on that. One remnant of the past that will be resurrected in some form is a bachelor tax.

I think the Spanish government should be more concerned with 25% unemployment than this carrot

I'm surprised that no one picked up on this bit :

What has one got to do with the other?

I disagree. I've never noticed a distinct gender difference in the way people want things cleaned. They're usually particular, some people don't mind mess and some people like me hate clutter.

Also unless I married an amazing cook I'd want to do the cooking (for meals together). I enjoy cooking and I love the food I make. Same goes with washing/cleaning/organizing MY stuff.

You may be right but I think the majority are. Just do this very scientific experiment. Take the room from the picture above. Bring a woman in, say bye and leave. You will see, like a computer program that has been built inside her for thousands of years of evolution, something will trigger in her brain and she will start cleaning, organizing, and making it smell nice.

Of course, those genes can be significantly repressed through hard conditioning and brain washing. For instance, in the american woman specie, the cleaning program fails to start and transforms into heavy complaining instead.

HCE,

This is so incredibly stupid, I just have to think something was lost in translation. The entire thing has such terrible consequences, it's mind-blowing, even if you consider its the work of spineless sycophantic politicians.

Also, what did the poor kids do in this so that they will be denied contact with their fathers? I wonder if the idiots in Spanish parliament have considered what it might be like to have a generation of disaffected kids growing up to be miscreants because they were forced to have less contact with their daddys.

I didn't notice, sorry. Someone linked it to me and so on.

Still, does that make any difference? Unless someone finds news about how the bill was repealed in the last 7 years, it only means that it has had more time to wreak havoc and a progressively even worse bill is on the way.

The only thing that bothers me about this picture is the behemoth computer monitor.

I think the room in the picture is a horrid mess. Maybe it's not diseased and rotting, but there is complete chaos and one can't take a step without falling over something. While I count myself as quite a relaxed person who doesn't need everything to be tidy and doesn't pick up things for days, this is just too crazy for me.

Ironically, in my experience it's mainly been young women who had rooms that looked like that.

I think you're overlooking the fact he's got his ergonomics locked down on his desk. He's got his ergonomic keyboard and mouse mat, the guy might get rats in his room but he sure as hell isn't getting RSI!
